Well after a great batting effort yesterday and taking 4 wickets with the ball Higgs led us to the win. Against the odds against a strong NSW side in Sydney ! Bloody marvellous !!!!!!!!! Plus the vics lost ! :D
Yeah great effort. I wanted Fitzgerald dropped from the side because of his poor form of late then I see him make 150 on Thursday!
Unfortunately we're 2nd to the Vics on quotient. :( If only we hadn't thrown away first innings points against them.

I was listening to the concluding stages on ABC radio today and it made for great and tense entertainment - a shame there haven't been too many Test matches played in Australia recently that have been as exciting and topsy-turvy as that was.
No doubt helped by the big names in the NSW lineup, large crowds turned up to the match - I heard over 2 000 turned up on the Saturday which is great for a domestic first-class fixture.

How important is the next game vs Vics. A win there and thats a big possibility given the injuries to Elliott, Harvey, and with SAv getting Blewett and possibly Fleming, Davies back and we are in a great position with 2 games Vs Tassie and WA without their internationals still to come. A bit early I know but this is their best chance since "not losing" the shield in 96.

Hey! We topped the table that year, that used to be all you needed to do to win it. :)

I notice that QLD didn't rate a mention in your charge for the shield!! I think we will again be hard to beat. Exceptionally strong batting and tidy bowlers....I think we are still the side to beat.

I'd love to see SA win the cup this season, but I fear your comments are accurate. QLD are definitely still the team to beat and just warming up.
I heard a comment the other day that sums it up for us Redbacks fans, it went like this .... "Barracking for SA is like chatting up an attractive woman, just when you think you are getting somewhere you get a swift slap in the face". :D
Here's hoping for Redback success in 2002-03.

South Australia are definately the suprise packets this summer. I didn't really rate their bowling lineup, but Rofe and co have proven me wrong. Blewett and Fitzgerald have had an outstanding start to the year too. About time the Redbacks moved up the Pura Cup table.

I was one of them, and came back on the Sunday as well. A couple of very absorbing days' cricket, 2 sides much more evenly matched than the internationals.
At lunch on the Sunday it all looked to be falling into place for NSW, but once Slater got out the collapse was on. In the end, Bevan got NSW close but no cigar.
Bevan's been in sensational form this summer. He got a double century against Tasmania and then was last out for a century in this game. He's not all that good on bouncy pitches against express quicks, which is why he's not in the Test team; but he's one of the best players of spin there is. He averages over 70 in first-class cricket at the SCG - and with the form he's in this summer that's a promising sign for the one-dayers when he'll be back in the Australian team.

Best SA win in a long time.
This comment, however, is not to degrade the effort - but it's a pity we need a heap of imports to challenge like this isnt it.
Great recruiting but it would be nice to do it solely on local talent - like we did when Bradman was literally a boy!

Local talent isn't everything - after all, Bradman was taken from NSW.
South Australia have acquired lots of players from interstate - Terry Jenner, Ashley Mallett, Jamie Siddons and Rodney Hogg to name a few.
It's great that players are able to get a second chance with careers by moving interstate. Look at John Davidson - his career was over with the Vics but he has been given a second chance by South Australia and has done extremely well.

When Bradman was a boy (well maybe a teenager) we lured NZ-born Clarrie Grimmett from Melbourne to play for SA! He'd played on the odd ocassion for Victoria and had also played in Sydney grade cricket.
Curiously John Davison was also foreign born (Canada), started in Sydney grade, then played for Victoria and now plays for SA... but I think the similarities end there (other than the fact that they're both slow bowlers).
Of the side that played on the weekend I'd only call Fitzgerald, Deitz, Higgs, Miller and Davo 'imports'. Harris was born in NSW but moved to SA at a very young age. So we still have a majority *just* of SA players. :) Those five are the only ones in the squad. (unless Jack Smith grew up in Canberra? He played for ACT last season but was born in SA) At any rate we're still better than Tassie who had a slight majority of imports in their side from last week. :D
All states are doing it anyway, NSW have Katich, Victoria have Arnberger, WA have Nicholson, Williams and Wilson, Tassie have Marsh, Watson, Saker et al... Players will always look for greener pastures interstate.

Paul Nobes, Jamie Brayshaw and Peter McIntyre are others... so we've had a bit of success with imports.
