Freo vs Essendon at Subi, the game James Hird had his face caved in.
Several things stood out, some reinforcing my own opinion, others making me view a couple of players differently
Medhurst :-- This kid has a real football brain, but at this stage he is focussing on to many unimportant issues on the field. He's young, he'll lose those traits, looks like you've got a winner here
Bell :-- Reinforced my view, he IS the midfield general, he dictates Freo's play, Hasleby is a good player, but he aint the brains of the midfield
Simmonds :-- Really surprised me, played a whole lot better than I thought he could
Brown :-- He also played a lot better that I thought his roly poly body would let him, Freo WILL miss him
J. Longmuir :-- He looked a lazy player, bad goalkicking habits, but when he went for a run around, he looked great, methinks playing him as a key position forward is not to his liking
Cook and McManus :-- Woeful disposal, they need to be replaced for Freo to take some forward steps
Pavlich :-- He's a whole lot better CHB than a FB, he needs the extra space CHB gives him, when he has that he is very damaging
Parker :-- Mr Negative, he wouldn't know a positive move even if it was written down for him, but that doesn't matter, all clubs need a negative stopper
Carr :-- Gets so much of the ball, but his decision making is not all that flash, he looks nervous, has something to work with
Croad :-- I reckon you should make him a ruck rover, use his athletic ability to its max
Grover :-- He is a turnover merchant, lousy decision making, and he zones off before it is prudent to do so, gets plenty coz he cheats off his opponent, but it doesn't help when he has such poor ability to pick out a team-mate

mate
Hes an arogant little **** but have to admit hes the type of player that wont be a flash in the pan.
The fact he relys on somthing that wont get slower or weaker with age suggests we have a longterm star.
My biggest problem is how the hell this kid spent most of the season being our main target.Sure he didnt kick the most goals but if you look at hte games hes who the midfielders look for.
Hes what 175 centimeters.

Try telling this to other supporters, macca in particular.
His value to the club is somthing we have never seen before. He gets the ball, uses it well and tells the other players what to do.
Back pocket picking off the loose ball type player my ass.

Top 5 ruckman from last season and was the recruit of the season.. you dont have to tell us how good he is

You dont need to tell us this, hence the out cry when he was traded for a lowly 13th pick.

He was injured, when fully fit I expect better ofr him.

Cook isnt given the credit he deserves
He is a our tough nut, hard into the packs he hurts the opposition and is very good at gettin his hand on the ball first.
His disposal isnt really that bad either.
Hes vital to the team and I would be very angry if he was replaced.
McManus see Cook

My opinion is give him free range to go where he wants when he wants.
Player that has it all and will dominate the competition with Riewoldt.

He is hte best stopper in the comp and gives drive off the backline.
Does his job better than any in the side.
Again without him we woudl be lost

He doenst like being a tagger but as you said I cant see him being anything else.
His performance on Buckley was magical.
Able to shut down a star of the game and be a damaging foward.
He certainly lived up to the carr standards that game

Treat him like waterhouse...
Let him run around and do as he wants.
Sure half the time hell look like a chicken without its head but when he fires hes unstopable.
I dont think he will ever be consistent
You didn't mention Farmer, :D
Good observations Asgardian.
Cook and McManus are mis-understood people. They are never going to be stars, they are stokers in the engine room and alot of their good work is not "specky". eg. courage, body work, pack work and backing up team mates. Both of them have had poor disposal at times, but then they can also kick a good goal or two.
Medhurst has matured greatly during the season, he does less of the "scratching" of the mark and is now more interested in making position to exploit the opposition. But your comments about him early in the season were right on.
JLo does look lazy, but even when he looks like that he does drag in some extraordinary marks. Shouldn't stray more than 50 metres from goal.
Parker has been the rock in defence for many years, but loves to go for a run out of defence. The improvement in the defence this year allowed him to be more "positive" and run off into attack more often. Very highly thought of by team mates and supporters alike, "doesn't blow his own bugle".
Carr became very attacking as the season progressed. Whilst tagging he was able to slip away and kick goals. Eg. versus Cousins.

Awesome post Asgardian.
Good to see a decent assessment of some Freo players by a non-Freo person.
I have to admit it's pretty interesting watching some of the earlier games on Foxtel. I caught the Round 2 St Kilda game the other day, and I could not believe the utter crap I was watching. The first quarter was just blunder after blunder, and the memories all come flooding back. You can sense how everyone there was thinking 'Another fantastic season coming up'. :)

Agree with most of those except Grover.
