View Full Version : South African cricket coverage
It looks like the global financial crisis has hit foxtel. They haven't sent one Australian commentator when in the past they've had their own commentators. Instead we have to listen to that guy who screams "EDGED" every time there is an edge. Then there was the angle they showed with the Hilfenhaus dismissal. They just showed his head and shoulders from the side and all of a sudden they were saying he's out.

We get the Aussie cheer squad at every break in play. I've got no issues with the commentary.
Camera work has been shoddy. Very shoddy.

Must be work experience week at the Wanderers this week because the coverage has been absolutely shocking. The camera work has been shocking, the audio terrible, commentary dull and an overall mediocre package.

Commentary is fine, except for the bloke (Cullinan?) who labelled Kallis as the best player ever. The camerawork has been pathetic. Constantly missing deliveries and the microphones seem to be stuffed at time.

You can complain directly to SuperSport here http://www.supersport.co.za/contact.aspx ;)
Doubt they'll care what people outside their market think though.
Love myself some Pommie Mbangwa, but Jesus Christ I hate Nicholas. He seems worse over there.

I haven't really been listening to them at all, have the radio in one ear and even though its a few seconds earlier (as long as its not streaming which is later) i don't mind. Camera work has been ordinary though.

Maybe that's going too far, the best player in the last 30 years.

i agree, it's going far too far but, to me, so is saying he's the best player in the past 30 years
you could confidently say that he's one of the best all-rounders in past 30 years (i.e. since Sobers) and one of the best players of his generation but beyond that you're getting into the realms of subjective opinions...
...don't get me wrong, we're all entitled to opinions on who's the best of the best but that's all they are
Jaques is a brilliant and consistent player but, like many judges, i'd take a bowling all-rounder like Hadlee, Wasim or Imran because of their ability to shape matches and series in addition to racking up great stats

It's not the camera work, it's the direction. The director decides which shot should be displayed, and he's doing a horrible job of it. The Hilfenhaus dismissal is the perfect example. It's like he went out for lunch and forgot he was directing a telecast.

First impression I had of the coverage/commentary is: any less exciting and a funeral will break out. What a bunch of bloody plonkers they are. They can't even entertain us with "in my day" stories because none of them ever achieved much at international level.
At least with the Aus coverage you get a bit of banter and piss-take.

I'm just thankful for a change in commentary, they aren't great but they sure are a helluva lot better than the channel 9 team. Unfortunately it's still infested with one Mark Nicholas, kick him out, please. But yeah, they stuffed up big time on that Hilfy dismissal.

I thought Hilf was just playing a warm up shot. "Edged! Out!" What the?

That's what Healy is for on Ch 9, it's his main role, one of the few people i've seen stand up to Ian Chappell. I remember Chappell started crapping on about Lillee and Thommo and how Lee and Tait reminded him of the "LT" in Lillee and Thommo.
HEaly just said "time to move on Chaps", pissed Ian Chappell off a fair bit and since then Chappell never misses a dig at Healy whether its shit about Healy being a doctor or whatever.

I'm so over this coverage. The amount of balls they've missed is absolutely ridiculous. The person who is directing this needs a good kick up the bum.
Nicholas is not brown-nosing again is he?
Yeah it's awful, almost as bad as the Sri Lanka tour a year or two ago where it was so dark you couldn't see a thing, the broadcasters did nothing to help this either.
anyone else fear the "spinning logo of doom"!?
You go to a replay, they show it, then you get the joy of watching a S.A Cricket logo spinning for 5-8 seconds each time, JUST allowing for the next entire delivery to be missed!

and now today the picture from morne morkel's end is completely buggered. it looks like they are playing in a snow storm from one end.
i think the cameraman has forgotten to clean the lense on his camera at that end (and i'd like to say i'm joking there but i seriously think that is the problem)....

HAHA yeh that is shockingly overused.
My mum watched for all of 10 seconds and said "Jeez that bloody logo gets annoying after a while." Try watching each ball with it!

wow this is shit. There was just some random talking for a good minute about the pitch with distant murmurings over the top of it. Then the sound came back after an appeal.
And there is now no commentary at all.

I remember Mark Nicholas saying something yesterday that it is the host broadcaster and not SS. So maybe this is a free to air feed in SA and this commentary is just borrowing it.

After some intensive research (insert joke here) I have discovered this match, and presumably the rest of the series, is also being broadcast on free-to-air TV on SABC 3. So I guess SABC is doing the production.
I wonder why Fox Sports is using the SuperSport feed instead of the SABC feed?

Going on what you are saying above, you would be a fool not to have Kallis in the side.
If you look at Kallis's record in winning matches, 61 wins (47%), he averages 22 (+32%) with the ball and 62 (+14%) with the bat. In comparison;
Hadlee 22 wins - 26% at bowling average of 13.5 (+41%) and batting average of 30 (+11%).
Imran 26 wins 29% at a bowling average of 14.5 (+37%) and batting average of 36 (-2%)
Wasim 41 wins - 39% at a bowling average of 18.5 (+19%) and batting average of 23 (+4%).
I'm not saying this from personal opinion, I'm no fan of Kallis but the statistics will say that he is in the top 10 if not top five greatest cricketers of all time, which is more than justified.
I've taken to sound down just crowd noise, which continues through the ad break, but I'm doing sound down for the football now as well, I'm sick of all commentators, except Buckley.

This is correct. Because the Supersport feed is the "World Feed" basically.
Also I believe Sabc uses a female commentator. I don't imagine this going down too well on bigfooty
That random talking was SABC interviewing the South African coach Mickey Arthur (and then suddenly Pommie Mbangwa started talking over it)

Anyone else notice a fly crawling on the camera lense for about 10 seconds? It was pretty funny.
I don't have Foxtel so i can't comment on their coverage, but I would like to comment about the ABC radio coverage. I found it strange that they sent their whole team over, instead of one guy (Jim Maxwell or Glenn Mitchell) to tag along with the SABC broadcast. Anyway, that's not what I'm complaining about.
The whole first session on Saturday was not broadcast in favour of the A-League SOCCER grand final!! Like, does anyone actually give a flying f*ck about this shit????

Daryll Cullinan. Is he the most biased commentator you have ever seen? In the last half an hour he was dreadful. Did not want to speak whenever Nicho was talking about the Aussies and struggled to complement good bowling at all. He tried to make an excuse for ever wicket.
He also talked up a Saffer win very highly as if they were the favourites.
He's worse than Healy!

I reckon it's good that they sent the whole team over (Jim Maxwell, Glenn Mitchell, Peter Roebuck, Mike Coward and Geoff Lawson). I don't mind listening to that commentary team even though when things aren't going Australia's way they start getting narky and demanding this and demanding that.
Like last night Jim Maxwell started saying that either Katich or Clarke should come on to bowl and replace McDonald and then McDonald gets a wicket. It is the perfect example of how easy it is to captain from the comm box.
Mike Coward is good although i think he sometimes gets a bit carried away with proceedings. My main issue with the whole team is that when Australia aren't doing well they basically start going the whole dooms day routine.
I know it's in the match thread too but it has to be said here that last night's coverage contained some of the most biased commentary I've ever heard, actually reached the point where it became comical several times.
Strangely, it just made it all the more enjoyable to watch, seeing these clowns getting so upset!
"Geez if only the toss went the right way"
I'm loving this commentary, it's hilarious hearing the ex-safrican players whinge because they're being outplayed. Trying to make themselves feel a bit better making up stupid scenarios.
Cullinan hasn't forgotten his humiliations, obviously.
What an A-Grade mong.

They finally did something good! They've gotten rid of hte commentary.
The coverage, as often pointed out, has been dreadful. Some particularly laughable aspects:
1) Failure to cover some wickets when they fell adequately
2) Darryl Cullinan - as often stated, he makes Healy look like Richie at times
3) Occassional wicket SFX when no wicket falls
...and other such gems.

What the hell was going on with that?? Bizarre.
