It was mentioned in another thread about past players and premiership sides so thought I'd start a thread where we can look back on past glories of the club.........

Probably my most favourite premiership was in 1977 after the let down of 76 and the first premiership I saw...........

The best Port Adelaide side/s I saw would be a toss up between 1979-1981, 1988-1990 and the 1994-1996 squads............it would be interesting to see a game between the squads.........

I'd probably slightly favour 1979-1981 given less players were moving across the border in those days...........but they were all great sides at the time........

Unfortunately I can't find a line up of the 1988-1990 and 1994-1996 sides at the moment...........

1977 was the first premiership I saw as well. It was just the tonic after 1976. I was at that one and it was no fun after we kicked the first 2 goals. I remember the Bays were favourites in 77 among a poll of "experts" in the Footy Budget - probably a throw back to us not having won a flag for 12 years, and the doubts from the year before. It was a delirious feeling to take that one (even if we did give the bays 3 consoloation goals at the end). I remember Tim Evans bagging 7 despite being clobbered by Fred Phillis and Eckermann's 3 goals hobbling around on one leg in the forward pocket (as well as missing a sitter. The next day Jack Cahill said he sent out the runner with the message to Ivan that if he had any fit players on the bench he would've dragged him for missing that!). And Tony Hannan going for a run with Greg Phillips in support, and Kutchie sat Syd Jackson on his ar$e on the shepherd - very nice. Syd handed out a couple that day too!

1979 was a funny year. Ebert had gone to North, Light had retired, Granger had gone to St Kilda. We had no rucks for the first half of the year cos Chris Natt wanted to go to Torrens and there was all this talk of us recruiting Mick Nolan or Graham Teasdale, and in the end we recruited Robert Dolan, the third string reserves ruckman from Norwood. Then Natty finally came back, missed the GF and Dolan became a folk hero against South's formidable ruck battery of Hines and Doyle. I reckon we played for top spot a few times that year and lost every time, including being touched up by Centrals at Elizabeth. And who could ever forget Tony Giles "bulldogging" tackle on John Duckworth in the Second Semi. Sensational stuff and went a long way to winning us that game. The GF was played in shocking conditions and we basically strangled the life out of South after a 5 goal 1st term with the breeze. All 12 goals for the match were kicked to the northern goals, and South kicked all 3 of theirs in one quarter.

1980 was just sensational, an annus miraculus (I think that's it). Minor Premiers, highest scoring team ever, Tim Evans broke the goal kicking record, Russell Ebert won his fourth Magarey Medal. I think we lost maybe 2 games all year and drew one and Glenelg still finished only half a game behind us. They even beat us in the minor round! But then they tumbled out of the finals b4 the GF and we played the old enemy Norwood. I remember Tim Evans breaking his thumb before half time and Natt and Dolan swapping at full forward. It was hot and I was hopelessly sunburned by the end of it, bit different to the year b4! It was a sensational GF, Norwood really took it to us for the whole game but we still managed to come out on top. One of my enduring memories of the day was winning the Reserves GF against the Bays with a 9 goal to zip last quarter, after being 7 or so down at 3/4 time. Granger played in the twos and kicked 5, and kept spitting on the Union Jacks they'd painted in the goal squares that day.

1981 was about the toughest Port side I've seen. They were dead and buried by the media half way through they year. We'd had a stack of injuries during the year, Kutchie did an achilles in Rd 1, Cunningham and Cahill were out for long stretches, Russell Johnston couldn't find form in his first year, half forward was a wasteland, Granger busted a hand (probably on someone's thick head) and didn't come back til halfway through the season. But when he did he sparked that whole side up. Just after we were written off, he came in against Sturt and fired us up to win that one at Footy Park, then we took on the bays at the bay ... they were 9-0 and had touched us up by 55 points in Rd 1 (where Kutchie did his ankle). We beat them by around 16 points in a memorable result and fired up through the second half of the season, to finish second or third. We spanked the bays in the second semi (they'd beaten us at Alberton in the third match against them in the minor round) and they were psychologically shot even tho they won the Prelim to play us in the GF. We belted them in the GF by 8 odd goals, Granger played with a broken hand and was reported on video for cracking Caldwell, and a skinny young mop topped superstar named Craig Bradley announced his amazing skills on SA football's biggest stage.

So many memories, so many more premierships to recount! :D

1988 was my first. I dont remember a whole lot about the game. I remember us getting there really early, and it was hell windy and we got a balloon outside, so we could let it go and see how quick the wind was. We let it go and it dissapeared in about 15 seconds. Then the siren went and i thought we were gonna miss the game, but it was the reserves....we beat Woodville. Then the real game started against the Bays. We started off fair crap kicking into the wind, but we ended up dominating after quarter time. Abernathy gave Marshall an absolute drubbing and won the Jack Oatey. Hynes stood up in the ruck and was almost BOG without Johnston who got suspended. I guess the one image that sticks in my mind is seeing Leslie call Johnno up on the stage and Johnno was in tears. Also remember the toe-to-toe fights between ****head Salisbury and Mahney, and Salisbury and Brown.

1989 was cool. Was my birthday the day before. I had to many lollies and was sick that night. Still went to the game tho. I remember buying a TAB (remember that drink hehe). I remember we sat up in the top part of the members grandstand and watched as we killed North in fairly crappy weather. Johnston was fantastic. Obst was dominating. Trigger ran like a horse all day. Rusty Boyd came off the bench and kicked two goals late in the second. Darren Smith was excellent. Rohan Smith missed after that arsehole Kim Klomp broke his jaw in the Prelim...Browny also missed out with a buggered ankle.

1990 will go down as right up their with the best of all time. Everyone was against us and we stuck it right up em!! We started a bit slow....Fidge was getting on top of Harris (who had a shocker), Glenelg were winning in the middle. Then there was the all in brawls near the end of the first quarter...Hynesy threw the biggest punches ive ever seen on a football field. Luckily for Bartlett he missed. About halfway thru the 2nd quarter we started to come good and kicked about 7 goals in 10 minutes. Mark Williams was getting on top...Hodges was starting to kick goals, Darren Smith was playing well, Hynesy was doing well after Johnno hurt himself...and then Hodges did his knee...and i cried. But he came back, broke the record, and we held the Bays off in the last 15 minutes when they started to charge home.

1992 i couldnt go to because i had pnemonia. I was spewing because it was hell sunny outside. Guess i was lucky because it deadset bucketed down harder than ive ever seen ever!!

1994 would be my second favourite. I didnt expect us to win, and when we were 6 goals down in the first quarter i gave up all hope. That is the last time ive ever doubted the fight of Port Adelaide. We probably could of been 4 goals up at 3/4 time had we kicked straight...but it probably made it better that we were still 2 goals behind! Enter Scotty!! 5 last quarter goals, Mcleod kicked 2, Malakellis, Ginever. Wakelin was excellent across half back. One of the best feelings in my life. Eagles fans had given us crap all year, and we got one back over them - in the most important game of the year.

1995 was spoiled for me by the fact we had these arseholes behind me who proceeded to kick me, throw food at me, elbow me in the head for the entire second half. Its a fair bit intimidating when your only 14-15 and they were a group of about 10 18-24 year olds. Funny part was none of them were Centrals supporters, and none of them knew any players names. Gone one back at the end when i threw a cup of coffee and one of the pricks head after the game.

1996 - BEST DAY OF MY LIFE. Grand Final was on my birthday...after the magical Prelim the week before i KNEW we were gonna win. Hodges played a deadset blinder. Francis was magical. Brown was excellent. Carter was strong in defence. Delaney absolutely destroyed his opponents. Nothing else really needs to be said except for that nothing will ever top the feelings i had that day. For your side to win a Grand Final on your birthday is an awesome feeling. I knew we wouldnt be beaten after Darren Smith flew across the front of the pack and took a screamer late in the third quarter and kicked truly. Even tho we were only 15 or so points up, i knew we wouldnt be beaten. Tears started welling in my eyes as Scotty kicked his 2nd goal in the last quarter...somehow pulling down a mark he just should not of got - outmarking 3 opponents while being 2nd in line. I started openly weeping when he kicked his 3rd of the last quarter - that booming kick from about 55 metres out in a similar position to the goal in the Prelim. The fact that he turned around and looked straight in our direction made it even better! Awesome awesome day. Had a massive headache from yelling and crying and cheering and jumping for the rest of the night at Alberton. Nothing will ever top that day.

1998 - Is up there in my favourites. I thought we would win, but didnt really expect us to if that makes any sense. Sturt seemed on top, but yet again we had a magical 3rd quarter. We got back into the match, funnily enough after Carter clobbered Atkinson. Carts stood up after that and was almost BOG. And 3 of the 4 last quarter goals by us are among the best goals youll ever see.

1999 was just a brilliant game of football by both sides. We looked like we had it won after Trigger kicked the opening goal of the last quarter...but then Norwood kicked i think 5 goals in about 7 minutes to take the lead back. Then we peppered the goals...Wait nearly kicked a 65 metre drop punt goal but hit the post....Damien Brown missed. Then enter Tigerman. A 55 metre reverse torp to win a grand final with 2 minutes left!! What an effort. Couldnt handle the pressure of the last few minutes and had my eyes closed until the siren went. Great feeling after the siren.

So id probably have to say 1996 was my favourite...followed by 1994 and 1990.

1994, went for our footy Trip, the bus down everyone was going for the Eagles, I copped **** and it got worse after the game had started, I wanted to go home but then that 2nd half was just awesome, All the eagles kids in tears who gave my **** all day, I was able to stand proud, I was only 13 but I still remember that feeling.
1996 was a great final as well, Nothing like seeing Scotty Hodges kicking goals for Port Adelaide, don't think anything compares to it in my sporting moments.

Have to say that Prelim Final when Scotty sunk Norwood from the boundary line 50 out with seconds remaining was one of the best finals I have been at, we were down by 4 goal in the last ten minutes, it was unbelievable!
Also the first semi against Central that went to extra time, it was intensifying.

Another thread I've bumped up as a lot of the original part of it was lost in the bigfooty crash last year so we can all get to work on adding to it again after the recent announcement of the Greatest Premiership Team........

Absent:- C.T.COCKS, F.I.HANSEN, L.WISDOM

The Greatest Premiership Team, as voted by the members of the club, was announced at a gala dinner at the Port Club on Saturday night (14th ) with 500 people in attendance. Whilst the Greatest Team and the Hall of Fame have been selected by selection committees with very strict criteria, the greatest premiership team was a chance for the members of the club to have their say by actually voting for the team they believed was the greatest premiership team in the hsitory of the club.

The 4 top teams nominated were 1914, 1959, 1980 & 1990 and apart from 1914 obviously, many of the players from these teams were present on Saturday night. A special tribute to the 1959 team with over 20 players from that era present on the night including Geof Motley (Apt/Coach) John Abley, Ted Whelan, Dave Boyd, Jeff Potter, Peter Obst, Trevor Obst, Brian Luke, Graham Mahney, Ken Tierney, Don Thompson, Bob Fabian, Kevin Doyle, John McBain, Dean Trowse, Kym Kelly and Kevin Salvemini all in attendance. With the current team also in attendance, it was a spectacular night, with over 40 premiership players and over 110 premierships in the room. (can't think of another club in the land that could boast a record like this on one night!!).

The night culminated with the annoucnement of the 1914 Premiership Team as 'The Greatest' and with special guest and Chief Football Writer at "The Advertiser" Michelangelo Rucci highlighting the amazing achievements of this team, it certainly shows that when it comes to football, we have a very educated group of members.

Just some of the statistics of the victorious 1914 Premiership Team;

* Went through whole season undefeated, including Australian Club Championship, and a match against combined South Australia. (only team in SANFL history to do so)

* Had an average of over 8 goal winning margin.

* Twice only in 16 matches did the teams goal tally fail to reach double figures.

* In 14 matches for the State premiership the team was only changed on 4 occasions.

* Magarey Medallist was won by brilliant folllower Mr J. Ashley.

* In the South Australian League Combination which took part in the Australasian Football National Carnival in Sydney - Port was represented by seven players. They were, J. Ashley, A. Congear, F.J. Magor, A. McFarlane, W.H. Oliver, (Vice Captain), J.W. Robertson, and J.C. Watson.

* Port Adelaide defeated Carlton for the Australian Club Championships. Port Adelaide won 70 points to 56 points.

* Went undefeated from June 1913 through until July 1915, including the 1913 Australian Club Championship with a victory against Fitzroy in the final

President Mr Brett Duncanson
Tonight has been a celebration of 4 of the great premiership teams of the club, however as we all know, for Port Adelaide, all of our 36 premiership teams have been the greatest but there is no doubt that the most important one is and always has been, the next one.

I thought it was a ridiculous price, might not have made $1000 but it was right up there. It was framed i guess but really i think the price was mega-excessive.

I believe that Shine Hosking, who was the captain, coach, dual magerie medalist and SA team of the century player, was a part of that team, and also a relation of mine

He sure was (front row 1st player on the left hand side)........I just updated my original post with the player names and incredible feats of the team.

He was named on the left wing for SA's team of the 20th century.

http://www.fullpointsfooty.net/images/SAToCHosking.jpg

Sampson 'Shine' Hosking's 1910 Magarey Medal win was but the most conspicuous of numerous achievements over the course of a sporadic 3 decade career in League football as both a player and a coach. As a coach he steered his beloved magpies to a total of 3 premierships during 2 separate stints at the helm. He also coached West Torrens to a flag in 1933 and took West Adelaide to a grand final in his only season in charge of the red and blacks. During World War Two he spent 2 seasons as coach of the Port Adelaide-West Torrens combined side for 1st and 2nd place finishes. However, it is as a player that he is rightly best remembered.

Despite being repeatedly beset by injury during the early part of his Port Adelaide career Hosking quickly established a reputation for speedy, effective play, notably characterised by accurate disposal, fierce, almost callous determination, and a notorious partiality for gamesmanship. Given his self-confessed reputation as "one of the dirtiest players who ever stripped" his achievement in winning an award presented to the League's best and fairest player was remarkable. Perhaps standards of 'fairness' have changed!

During his playing career Hosking gave notice of his latent coaching ability by instigating strategies such as commissioning a loose man in attack (typically Hosking himself) and stationing one of the team's on ballers a kick behind the play (again, as often as not, this proved to be Hosking).

Despite officially retiring in 1921 after 12 seasons and 149 games with the magpies Hosking was later to effect 2 brief 'come backs'. In 1927, his first season as coach of Port he added 2 further games to his tally and, even more remarkably, during his second stint as coach of the magpies, at the age of 48, he sat on the bench as 19th man for 1 game in 1936. Despite the fact that there were to be no further 'resurrections' after that the status of Sampson Hosking as one of the true giants of the game had been well and truly established.

I was a free spirited 6 year old when I was taken to the 1965 G/F win over Sturt. Unfortunately I remember very little about the day or game.

I was there for '66, '67, & '68, all losing to Sturt, damn that John Halbert, may his heart burn in hell, and vultures peck at his eyes.

Sturt also got the '69 & '70 flags over Glenelg.

Port had another double dip, '71 & '72, against the Roosters, again failing.

This drought was getting on my goat

'73 Bays beat North
'74 Sturt beat Bays
'75 Norwood beat Bays

'76, THE SHAME
Rick Davies murdered us, Bagshaw was going nutty from too much ball, a whole heap of the, this was as bad as it gets.

Interesting thread. As a non-Port person, I would lump for the 79-81 side being the best; not many blokes who wouldn't have made the transition to VFL. Handy 81 GF half forward line - Bradley, Granger, Clifford.
