Alan Stewart was interviewed on 5AA earlier today by KG and Cornsey as to his opinions on what Port Adelaide will do in the draft this weekend.

Alan didn't want to give too much away but basically said that he had his eye on 4 South Australians, if they are still available for picks 8 and 18 he will use the picks on them. He believed the group of players after Wells, Goddard and Salopeck (?spelling) is fairly even so we would go for a South Australian before taking someone from interstate.

So who would the 4 South Australian players be? Schammer is obviously the standout if he is still available.

Alan also went on to say that they are looking at a player who went through the draft a couple of years back, Begley who is rumoured went through the system in 1998 so would there be any other players?

Any Territorians fit that description?

Porthos is a good bloke so I know he won't mind me pinching this from his draft page (crawl, crawl) :

Nick Smith (Norwood) - SA captain. Played at centre half back - a good mark.

Byron Schammer (West Adelaide) - Very small (175 and 73) left footer, with excellent skills and footy nous. Should be picked early. Larke medallist.

Jay Schulz (Woodville-West Torrens) - A pretty poor tournament for the tall defender following his domination at u16 level last year.

James McEntee (North Adelaide) - Played forward and took some nice marks, but his kicking for goal and concentration let him down.

Steven Eichner (Port Magpies) - Tall half-forward or half-forward flanker with fair skills. Missed the draft last year, but didn't do a lot to impress this year.

Denis Iljesen (Woodville-West Torrens) - Solid fullback, but a one-sided kick.

Adam Cooney (West Adelaide) - Prolific onballer, but too young to draft this year.

Kane Officer (Central Districts) - Consistent player with a good footy brain; can read traffic well in the packs. SA Vice captain.

David Kellett (Central Districts) - Small forward that can find the goals - among SA's best.

As far as I know Port are considering strongly Schammer, Schulz and Smith. Don't know of any others although maybe you can see someone here.
And Scott : it's Salopek(no "c").

Take whatever you want from my site, its not like I wrote it all.

For my money the four are Schammer, Schulz, Smith & Kellett.

I've no idea who the potential re-drafting would be.

Could it be someone who tried to get drafted but failed?

That'd cover half of the SANFL for a start.

If its someone that went to draft camp and didn't get drafted, Ah Chee comes back in the mix after his attendance a couple of years ago.

I was thinking of AhChee and Illett, but wasn't sure about when and if they attended draft camp.

Nick Smith is more of a forward, played most his footy at CHF, FF and Ruck, played in defence in the championships because SA didn't have many key defenders, like to get Smith at 18 (16) but I think he will be snaffled up by then, Schammer obviously will be our first target and maybe Schulz at 18.
Smith was our U/18 Captain, he was rated as the best SA youngster early this year and was expected to cement a place in the league side but never carried on as was expected.
Has a younger brother called Tom who is currently playing for Sacred Heart, not as tall but more mobile and skillful, only 16 though so we probably won't know until a year or two if he will join his brother at AFL level.
I think the 4th could be maybe Kane Officer, underachieved in the championships but seems to have the attributes of becoming a consistent AFL footballer.

I would be extremely surprised if Officer was top 20.

We only have two picks in the top 20, I was referring to a later pick.

If Carlton lose their picks does that mean pick 18, which we have is questionable also?

Yeah I guess that is a fair solution.;)
As much as would like to see Carlton lose their first two picks I think it would be compomising the draft taking them off them after the trade period.

People say this draft is weaker than previous years but a few recruiting managers have been satisfied with draft picks for high profile players, are we being bluffed by this draft?
Barry Brooks, a lot of Port fans think he is worth more than #8 in this years draft and think it was our biggest mistake of the trading season, I still think our biggest mistake yet was the delisting of Jordan Barham, really thought he was going to develop into something special, just hope we can redraft late in the draft.
