Will Carey be listed with North Adelaide? Or will he go to another club? And how do they work these things out anyway?
I saw some footage of him training - he looks to have slimmed down, but the movement is there. I can't say that I don't envy you guys getting the chance to cheer him on over the next few years.
There was a debate about this on footysa.com. Apparently Carey was with North Adelaide long enough before he was recruited by North Melbourne for North Adelaide to claim him this year. Although he's unlikely to play a match for them! I hope the same applies for Jason Torney and South Adelaide.

I'm sure that if you have ever played for a SANFL club then you are tied to that club whenever it is that you come back - so North Adelaide it is for Carey - although I would bet plenty that he will never play with them.
For Crows and Power players who don't originate from a SANFL club they go into a mini draft, working upwards from the bottom team of the season just completed.
He did look good didn't he??

Thanks for that DaveW and Macca23.
So I take it that it doesn't matter that Carey never played a senior game with North Adelaide? (I could be wrong, but I'm sure he only played U19s and maybe reserves footy for the Roosters).
I'm of the view that Carey should lose bulk and sacrifice some strength for speed. He's got almost 250 games under his belt, he reads the play brilliantly, but his body can't take the battering at CHF (even after a year of rest). Give him a role along the flanks and pockets (added bonus - does the opposition coach move his best defender, usually the FB or CHB, out of position to cover Carey, or does he use his 3rd best defender on him?), let him use his footy smarts, and you'll get 2 to 3 seasons, between 50 and 70 goals, and probably a flag.
But if he bulks up and plays CHF, I'd be concerned that the soft tissue injuries will return and you won't get the best out of him.

Why not bulk up and play full forward to out-muscle the opposition full backs one-on-one like Alistair Lynch?

Well - Carey came from the Roosters, so I guess he will go back to us! Woohoooo It's quite possible, he can were number 18 for us again, which is now vacant as Gerald "The Prince" Cornelius has decided to leave us! lol

Lynch's body is in better condition than Carey's. And I think that when a player bulks up, they'll go body-on-body, and you then run the risk of Carey's soft tissue injuries returning. I know that when Andrew Dunkley "bulked down", he picked up some speed, and the number of soft tissue injuries he had virtually disappeared, and I feel that Carey could benefit in the same way.

Stevo will continue to do the hack work across CHF allowing Carey to play FF (Lynchy style as been suggested). We should get more games out of him if he plays FF, with the occasional run further up the ground. I can't wait to see him in Crows colours. Bring on 2003!
BTW, who will the Roos match-up on Carey? Martyn is gone & I doubt McCartney would be fit, so Archer perhaps. Could be a firey encounter after the events which lead to his transfer of clubs...

I agree with you 100%. CHF is the last place I would play him because he wouldn't even last out the first season. FF is the spot which will get the most return from him and extend his playing life.

Quite a few Roos fans pushed the "Carey as FF" view in 2000/01, although we wanted him to play as a forward who leads rather than the Lynch "man on man" style.

If Carey is at FF, then i think it would be a combination of Archer and Colbert. One would mind him, the other would leave his player to assist the other in minding Carey (and cutting off leads and that sort of stuff).
If Carey plays as a flanker, then it would be Archer.

I think Carey is talented enough to play both as a leading forward & man-on-man.
If you reckon you are going to double-man Carey, who are you going to leave without an opponent - Stevo, Welshy, Birdman or Rockin Ronnie? IMO, this will be a huge benefit of having Carey as it will free up our other forwards.

Why not try Carey in defense? afterall that is where you tend to struggle, and Nigel Smart isnt exactly young and he tends to be holding down a key possy week in week out.... im sure that he could play both back and forward. CHF it is for him, he was training at my dads gym about 10 weeks ago and he said that he wants to get back to the best CHF in the league because everything is back and the hunger is there again.
Good call on playing Carey in defense. Let him set up the play, control the backline, and add structure to your play. Although with Carey at FF and the `bomb it long to Carey` gameplan will no doubt still be effective, as Shinners suggested you will be decreasing his football life and risky more injuries as he crashes the packs. It is awesome to watch though.
Carey is smart enough to play anywhere on the ground. I have no doubt he will be used in a variety of positions, need some goals, send him forward, need to stem the flow of oppostions goals and protect a lead, send him back, need some drive out of the middle, stick him in the centre.
BTW if he plays forward against us, i feel Archer is a little small for him, despite always playing on bigger players. Look for Colby or Browny to take him.
