Due to the rankings system we now have a so called system that tells us who is the number one ranked team.
If Australia does beat South Africa in this series do you think that they are the number one test side at the moment regardless of the points sytem???
I honestly don't know....

South Africa is the best ATM.
It is not India, claiming they are the best because they beat us in India was an absolute load of shit, we have beat them their once in about 40 years FFS.
Beat us at home then you can claim your better, just like SAF did
Probably SA but all 3 of these teams could beat each when on form so no one is a dominate all number 1 like we've seen from Australia in the last decade.

SA are probably just number 1, but there isn't going to be a clear dominating world champ like Australia 95-07 for sometime i feel.

right now - south africa. just. we win the next 2 tests i'd have us back there though... (which is where we will be).
if we win the series 2-1 then i'd say it'll be a dead heat for first.
india clearly 3rd IMO but not far behind.
If Australia win this test they deserve number one.
South Africa can't be considered number 1 if they can't defeat such an inexperienced Australian side at home.

I say if we win series we remain number 1, after dominating world cricket for so long Seth efrikahhh would need to win at home to rightfully take it off us, as would India, they would have to beat us at home.

Australia still. Why have rankings if no one uses them?
Well, Australia have certainly played like a #1 team thus far, against a team that beat us at home...and at any rate, they're still nominally #1 on the rankings. So I'm going with them. India and SA are close, though.

That's only an indication, it's not proof. It's no more conclusive than the Duckworth-Lewis system or Hawkeye.
