Seeing as we're back on the air ...
Matt King (ex Richmond rookie list, 184cm 72kg) has signed with the Maggies.
Fabian Francis has signed.
Tony Brown has signed on for another year and has moved back to Adelaide.
Fabian must be wishing he'd signed that 1 year contract with the Power at the end of 2001. Have saved himself two moves between Adelaide and Perth and would probably be on a new contract in 2003.
Great set of pick-ups for the Maggies, though.

Hope all goes well for Francis after that debacle called Freo.
This came to me on Tuesday from the Magpies:
FABIAN FRANCIS SIGNS
The Port Adelaide Magpies have further strengthened their playing list with the signing of Fabian Francis to the club for the 2003 season.
Fabian is thrilled to back with the Magpies and is looking forward to getting into full training. Fabian joins a key group of recruits and players returning/coming to the club this season including;
* Tony Brown (returning from injury / moved back to Adelaide)
* Ricky O'Loughlin (AFL - Sydney)
* Paul Evans (Mildura)
* Ross Funke (AFL - Richmond & Melbourne)
* Matthew King (AFL - Richmond)
* plus waiting to announce another couple of key inclusions
following the AFL pre-season draft on December 17th.
Following the dissappointments of the 2002 season, Fabian is really excited about the season ahead and will certainly have an enormous impact on the club, both on and off the field. HIs experience at both AFL level and in Grand Finals for the Port Magpies will be invaluable.
Wonder what other namesare in the pipeline?

^^^ Matt King. Ill do some research and find out some stats on him in the next day or two.
Its fantastic that Tony Brown has re-signed. I thought for sure that he wouldnt be back next year, after breaking his leg and Rhino being sacked. I guess it shows he is commited to our footy club which is a great sign.
Flash...well, i dont particualry like him much but he'll be a good addition.

Well i looked thru all the best players and goalkickers for both Coburg seniors and reserves and he didnt get a mention once. So i dunno if hes extremly pathetic or he had a season long injury or whatever.

Maybe the Maggies should chase delisted Power rookies, instead of Richmond's. At least we have a fair idea the Power ones can play a bit.

At this stage it looks like Darryl Poole will continue on after his knee injury.
Speaking with his sister earlier this year it looked like it may have been the end.
I guess no news is good news!
Although there have been some big retirements in in SANFL this week in Danny Morton and Brodie Atkinson.
I was really disppointed to see Morton retire, he was my one and only link with players who I actually played with. I guess its a sign of me getting old.

Hey, don't feel too bad. When I started watching footy all the players were younger than me. Then I was as old as some of the younger ones. Then I was as old as most of them, then all of them. Now I could be their father.

Apparently Matt King did his knee in a practice match, but was a popular player and would of been promoted during the year.

Paul Evans, any relation to Tim?
I understand he was on a suppl ist somewhere and could possibly be TE's son.

Paul Evans was on the Power list for 4 years, played a handful of games. Was All Australian U/18 full forward going back to 1996. Played in Port Magpies 1999 premiership side. I dont think hes a relation to Tim.

Gotcha, I thought there was a Port connection somewhere, I remembered the name.
Not sure why I thought there was a Tim connection.
Thanks.
BTW does anyone know how Ben Cooke and Luke Duncan are performing in pre-season training with Port. Two Riverland boys giving it a go in the "big smoke".

If Pooley does play hopefully he will go a lot better than he has in the previous couple of years. Not sure how much he has left in the tank.
As for other players hopefully they can snare another tallish forward as we seem pretty light on for genuine tall forwards. Evans along with maybe Poole and the makeshift forwards of Ackland, Achee or Fiegert isn't exactly outstanding.
With Brown back and O'Loughlin replacing Eugene, along with Funcke and Francis there seems to be some good quality midfield/running types.

Lets hope he has the right attitude as he seemed to lose the plot a little after he was initially on Port's AFL list..............

Not sure what list i'm on but a mate of my works there and we sponsor the Magpies a little as well. We normally just get things like that in the form of a press release, pretty sure most of it is public knowledge.

It is probably just for sponsors, media etc, not supporters. Wish they would send them to the guy who does the Magpies website. They seem to forget about him.

Perhaps he should sponsor them then he'd get them straight away too.

I normally get forwarded those type of emails from a family friend who's been a long time sponsor of the club as well as being involved in a lot of the work being done behind the scenes to ensure the long term survival.
They were a little suprised when I sent them the details this time........
Anyway some food for thought...........
It appears a lot of work is being done behind the scenes to correct the restrictions that were put on both Port clubs upon the AFL entry. They are very confident of turning these restrictions around in the long term as it will benefit all SANFL clubs and with a little bit of luck we may be back with only the 1 Port Adelaide club again in the future..........:D

Now that the pre season and rookie drafts are done, it'll be interesting to see if the Port Magpies move to sign any additional players ... assuming they didn't miss out like WWT. From one of Macca's ealier postings it looks like they missed out on Heath James.

Yup. According to a close mate who is his cousin, he was 100% definatly coming back to play for the Magpies next year.

Pity. The reduced physical demands of the SANFL might have helped with his hamstring problems and given him the chance to enjoy playing footy again. Hopefully he'll overcome those problems and have a successful AFL career.

He'd of been handy back at the Magpies for season 2003, a player who has never come close to his full potential. ANyway hope he does well at Sydney, it's got to be his last chance.

I see the Maggies got Ronnie Burns in the SANFL mini draft. Not sure how many games he'll play for Port though. TROSA seem to think he and Wayno will be the answer to all their goal kicking dreams, but if he's not picked to play for them it will most likely be because he's either injured or suspended.
Still, with his experience and goal sneak ability, he'd be a handy player to get qualified for the SANFL finals.

As Porthos mentioned elsewhere I'd be expecting Ronnie to play at least 3 games with the Magpies.........
Can anyone confirm that Brian Beinke has signed for 2003.
I was told this by a board member.
If true he will go some way to solving our forward marking problems.

I had heard mid November that the club was very optimistic to sign him and then earlier this month someone commented that although he was still considering his long term football future that he has decided to play on with Port - I haven't actually seen anything official about his signing.

I think it'd be a fair assumption to say that Burns will be pulling on the black & white jumper at some stage this year. Hopefully he will be able to qualify for the finals and help the Magpies get back to where they belong.

Hi Guys and gals, is there any truth in the rumour that Leigh Coudraye(Magpies B grade ruckman) is training with Glenelg ?
Also was Damon White from North Adelaide swapped for Ryan O`Conner(Maggies and Roosters made a deal)?

Thought I'd post in the article for those of us that don't get the Advertiser......
Francis returns to where he began (http://www.theadvertiser.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,5844933%255E21546,00.html)
By ZAC MILBANK The Advertiser 16 January 2003
FABIAN Francis will resume his much-travelled playing career in 2003 where it initially blossomed, the Port Adelaide Magpies.
Francis, 29, won't play until midway through the year due to reconstructive knee surgery, after he was injured in June playing for South Fremantle in the WAFL.
But that isn't stopping the Magpies from being excited about signing the wingman with 109 AFL games to his name.
"He's a proven premiership player and it's great to have him back," Port chief executive Paul Belton said.
"There is a genuine degree of excitement around the place."
Francis' signing highlights a growing list of names headed to Alberton as the Magpies attempt to rectify their uncharacteristic absence from the 2002 major round.
Tasmanian Justin Plapp (189 cm 83 kg), who played a total of 49 games for Richmond and St Kilda, will line up in the black and white next year.
After spending last season playing for Port Melbourne in the VFL while on Sydney's rookie list, flashy Ricky O'Loughlin, 23, will return.
O'Loughlin and Plapp, coupled with the confirmed arrival of Ross Funcke (Melbourne) will bolster Port's squad with AFL experience.
Former Richmond rookie Matt King (19, 184 cm, 72 kg) will also aim to have an impact with the Magpies this year along with key forward Paul Evans who returns after coaching with Robinvale in country Victoria.
In a further boost, both Bryan Beinke and captain Darryl Poole have been making their presence felt on the training track.
North Adelaide has won the race to sign Adelaide Crow Ian Perrie from South Adelaide.
Perrie, 23, will be hoping his switch to the Roosters will rekindle the promising form he displayed at centre-half-forward for Adelaide in 2001.
Norwood will be without the creativity of Jarrod Cotton this season, the left-footer deciding to sit out of football for a year.
Suffering from a bulged disc in his back, the 152 game half-forward is hoping a season off will freshen him physically so he can continue in 2004.
Steven Williams was on 5AA last week and said Pooley was training well and looking pretty fit. Williams hoped he'd play a role as mainly a CHF. Was also very pleased that they'd "talked" Beinke into playing as well.
