View Full Version : Fishing Report - Lamont Reef 3rd March.
LIONS then DAYLIGHT

Get ready to head out to the reef again this morning before the wind blows up this weekend. Just waiting for my mate to arrive at my house before we leave for the ramp and i thought to kill some time i'd post a short report on our last trip.
Left early morning (4am) and had a bit of trouble getting out of the mouth of the river. The mouth is notorious for it's changing channel and at low tide getting out without getting stuck can be a problem as it is very shallow. The fact the entrance isn't dredged (due to cost + greenies) is very annoying. We had to push the boat for a bit and the fact a crocodile (fairly rare for south of Rockhampton) was sighted earlier in the week didn't help matters.
We eventually got out into open water and we were greeted with good conditions. Travelled 2 hours and we arrived at a spot called Lamont reef and went straight to the "big red" spots. Caught 2 decent sized reds (Red emperor for you vics) in 30 minutes before the fish went off. This spot was in about 50 metres of water so we went back into the shallows (20 - 30 metres) to drift for trout and red throat emperor.
Caught 5 trout and 4 good sized red throat emperor before my mate hooked a decent sized reef shark which broke the line about 5 minutes into the fight. Normally without a wiretrace a shark will break a line very quickly but my mate had ganged hooks on which prevented that, at least for a short period of time.
So all in all it was a day where we had to work hard for the fish, still got a decent feed for 2 people.
Here is a picture of LtD with the best coral trout of the trip caught on a whole pilchard floated down unweighted on a 30 pound handline. Takes a fair while to get to the bottom but the less weight the more fish. Only possible when the current is minimal.

Actually a few years ago Andrew Symonds attended a local 3 day fishing competition. Went out to the reef and also went to the local dam chasing barramundi. By all accounts he was a top bloke.

I take it you have never been reef fishing, you get sun burnt quite easily, even in overcast weather. Rather have my collar done up all the way then get burnt.
Photo makes me look a bit chubby then in real life.

The pants were about 4 times my size, when we got out to push the boat it's important to have long pants on as over the years the odd box jellyfish has been seen and on one occasion one was caught in a cast net. I had to change out of the jeans because they were soaked.
Dissappointing we didn't get much red emperor, the trip today was the same, only got 1 or 2 keepers and a mixed bag of hussar, sweetlip and a couple of cod but they are ordinary to eat so they went back as did a couple of trevally.
With trout though they smash the bait in a distinct "double tap" within 1 or 2 seconds. The first tap is to kill the bait (even though its dead, the fish doesnt know that) and the 2nd tap is to engulf the bait. They really run hard into coral so its important to muscle them out of the coral before they snag your line. Handlines do the best job IMO rather then expensive braid and what not.
Once again though we had trouble getting back into the river due to the low tide. One time a few months back when a fishing comp was on (a lot of outer towners come in) there were 3 or 4 boats beached high and dry when they tried to get out. One was yelling and swearing and what not, we just said listen mate, there's not much we can do.
This reminds me of that Jeffa thread which is a fishing board classic. Slightly more legit in this case however.

I remember that thread. That guy said he had caught a Snapper. Didn't look anything like a Snapper.

What do you mean comedy value?
It's a fishing report. All is the comedy value poking fun at the photo?
I wouldn't mind taking some of you guys reef fishing, see what your made of.
A few months ago a few guys from the Queensland Bulls made the trip down to Gladstone and went reef fishign with a private operator (not a charter boat, just a recreational fishermen, i remember reading a report on another site about it). Did really well, caught some massive reds.
Unfortunately, got a cyclone approaching so may not be fishing for a few weeks. Hopefully those charter boats and trawlers that populate the area in significant numbers get into the harbour before the cyclone arrives. A quick glance of marine charts will show that the area is littered with wrecks with some over 100 years old.
A few years back a trawler went down. A few guys i know got stuck on a reef in a storm in November last year. Went to sleep and woke up with blinding rain falling on their face. Heard a thump on the hull and i thought WTF is that?
Then they realised they were caught on a reef, apparently waves were coming over the bow and nearly smashing the windows of the cabin in. Luckily the boat was a really solid ex-pro boat otherwise it would have broken up on the reef. Went to use the radio to call for help and the local marine rescue got them off the reef. Very lucky because in that situation if the boat breaks up your at the mercy of the reef in rough weather. Then sharks and what. These guys were in their 50's (2 of them) and they are not the fittest blokes. Could have easily have died.
What do you mean comedy value?
It’s comedy value because you clearly rate yourself and you completely stuffed up and posted on the wrong board.
Was amusing for a bit, getting less so now.
Or, even more clearly, he just wanted more attention than the 3 monthly views the fishing board would bring.

Here is another pic. This time of a red emperor caught on the same trip as that trout. This one took a strip bait of a iodine bream. Iodine bream are shit eating, but cut the fillets off and they are a fresh bait.
This red nailed a fillet of iodine bream and **** me he ran hard as well. Red emperor always provide a good fight. Once again hauled him up with a hand line, but he fought really hard that one, no doubt he would have been born and bred in Queensland. Reds can sometimes be a bit temperamental, a bit like Gunnar Longshanks. Sometimes big reds just hammer the bait, (think Mitchell Johnson to Mark Boucher's offstump) and other times they just lightly pick it up and play with it and then you strike and all the weight just hits you. When they are like that they can be a bit tricky, rookie fisherman will strike to early and won't hook the fish.

Here are a couple of Red Throat Emperor, you vics wouldn't see fish as good as this or as big as this. Take note, and offer praise and thanks.
These are very good eating fish, some rate them higher then the coral trout and red emperor. They are a schooling fish and if you hit a patch of them they can be bought to the boat quicker then Andrew Symonds drinks beer. Fight deceptively hard, small fish can fight in such a manner that you think they are bigger then ther are. Like the red emperor they fight all the way to the boat though probably not as doggedly as the red. Coral trout are lazy bastards, get them out of the coral and they are like a dead weight being hauled up from the depths.
These fish were caught on squid in shallow water (20 metres) this time on a TLD reel loaded with braid. Interestingly when you fillet these fish sometimes if you open their stomach you will find pebbles and little crabs that they feed on. A few years back my dad caught a 5 kg red throat out at the swains on a week long trip. Might not sound big but for that species it is a magnificient specimen.

This fish is a spangled empemor or yellow sweetlip.
Good eating fish with good fighting qualities. Much like Queenland sport teams. This one was taken on the line shown in the picture on a squid bait. A few years back we hit a school of these fish and we caught 3 in 5 minutes. I dropped a line over after rebaiting and as the line went to the bottom i decided i needed a beer. Before that though i checked to see if i had any bites as the line had reached the bottom, no touches so i thought i could sneak off to get an ice cold XXXXer from the esky. I kid you not, i had just opened the esky and got hold of the XXXX stubbie when my TLD combo went flying over the side into the depths.
To say i was pissed off would be an understatment. To this day i believe one of those fish took my rod and reel, we were on a school so it's pretty likely that an oversize yellow sweetlip took my gear which indicates the fighting quality of these fish.
A good tactic to chase these fish is to anchor on a sandy channel between 2 reefs. As the tide drops the yellow sweetlip move through the sandy channel and hopefully you can catch them.
