Just got my hands on this album today. After listening to it a couple of times to get my head around it, I have become quite addicted to it.
I found it alot heavier than "L.D. 50" and has a pretty strong gothic undertone.
I'll also just add that "RU-D" is probably the best bass player I have seen in action for a while IMHO.
Thoughts from those who have the album or those who have any interest in Mudvayne???

I see they have changed their costumes too. Didn't really mind their old ones, I grew into them, but their new ones are downright ****house.
I'd appreciate their music alot more if they didn't look like ********s.

I got the limited edition with the bonus dvd. It has an interview with the boys and they said that the costumes and the nick names where just a bit of fun and would probably change them every album.
Don't expect it to sound anything like "LD 50", the new album has a more heavy gothic sound to it. ;)
On a side note. I also just bought the new Taproot album "Welcome". Unlike Mudvayne they've gone the other way and mellowed out a bit. Definately an album to check out If your into Taproot.

Taproot were always kinda mellow as it was. I love their first cd...is bloody good and has some great songs on it.

Wow. This is one ****ing good cd!!! Theyve certainly improved as a band. Definatly the best metal cd ive heard this year.
Just about everything about them has improved. Kuds voice has improved (he's got an awesome singing voice), Spags drumming is beyond excellent, Guurgs guitars are heavy and chunky and bloody good, and Ryknows bass....well hes definatly one of the best bass players in the world. The time changes are pretty cool too.
Their song writing ability has improved. 3-4 songs off the last cd were written and recorded 2 days before they had to exit the studio so they were a bit rushed, and you could tell with the sound of them (Nothing To Gein, Everything and Nothing) but LD50 was/is still my faovurite metal cd. This one is twice as good. Some of the songs are seriously bloody good. In particularly Silenced, Not falling and Mercy Severity.
I dunno where you got the gothic undertone from  I cant hear it at all. But when i think gothic i think of Type O Negative, Paradise Lost and NIN. Its a lot heavier than LD50...but i think the "gothic undertone" is simply just the production of the cd.
With this cd they will shoot to the front of the pack of new metal (not nu-metal) bands of the last few years.

All hail Rex Brown Macca! :D ;)
I wouldn't rate them as highly as you in the metal world, based on the fact that they have all that crap on their face, and with costumed. I know we should look past that, but in the eyes of many fans, they will never be up there because of this. All the great metal bands didn't need this to be big. These bands rely on it a bit, and therefore will never be on the same level as the greats. Ever.
Just an opinion.

I totally disagree. Its just a costume. I couldnt really care what they wear/dont wear on stage...its the music that matters. When your listening to a cd your not commenting on face paint or funny masks and boiler suits. Putting on face paint doesnt take anything away from the music. All it does is add something to the live show - something different from watching the standard 4 guys with long hair, stubble on the face etc etc.
They put on a very good live show...got a few videos of some of their shows and they go nuts.
Would Slipknot be any better, or worse, if they took off their masks??
Go out and buy this cd....its a real cranker and youll soon see that they are one bloody good band and that the face paint thing dont really matter.

I'm pretty damn sure they are a good band, as I have plenty of respect for your music tastes.
But I guess it's just me. I look at the Sabbath's, Pantera's, Slayer's, Megadeth's etc who were all huge and didn't need that stuff. I see it as a way off getting more interest in their music because they wear face paint.
Anyway, it was more the fact you rated them so highly. Their music might be fantastic, but I think all that stuff just takes something away from it all, for me anyway. I might be a picky SOB, but that's me. I don't like the fact these "new" metal bands are wearing all this crap, as they don't need too.
If they went out without the gear, I'd have greater respect for them.

I can't undestand that.
This is a non Mudvayne fan opinion, but while makeup and costumes are a gimmick, how different is it to Pantera with their tough guy image for example?
It's not.
You mentioned Pantera. Like I said, their tough guy image is their gimmick, just like their glammy gimmick was their image in the 1980's. Rex Brown, or Rex Rocker?
You mentioned Slayer, their Satan worship image was their gimmick. Hell it worked, it still does.
Sabbath's gimmick was Black magic, horror movies & gloom. It worked.
In fact in many ways a good gimmick is a supreme recipe for gaining a fanbase. Take Kiss for example, how many less millions of albums would they have sold without their makeup & costumes?
A gimmick is used to gain attention, and frankly I would do it if it meant I could attract an entirely new fan base. It's marketing - music is marketing. Christina Aguilera's dressed in nothing, not because she's a porn star- but because she, and her label realises it's going to sell her 500,000 more CD's.
Smart business decisions.
If you like the music, that's all that matters.
