Wouldn't know haven't heard much about it... You guys in Melbourne must be getting worried seeing as you all keep bringing him up. Over here it's just been pre season as usual as far as I know, our fans have always attended training. It's called support!

I'm guessing you mean Jan the 3rd there. Hopefully we'll get some story about that too here in the 'Tiser as well. No footy news in the Mail today at all :(

I see on the main board rfctigerarmy where you have tipped the Crows for the flag in 2003.

I hope you are right!

If I may though I think this year is a first - some people other than Crows fans thinking the Crows just might do OK.

You have no idea how different that is!

Does Mattner have OP? I hope its not too serious.

And go Benny Marsh!

I can't remember if Mattner has been on any previous injury lists. Let's hope it's not serious!

All the best to Ben Marsh. I'd say he knows he's on death row!

Channel 10 news reports that Carey has pulled his hamstring. He should be fine for when training resumes on the 2/1/03. Bad luck...I was hoping to see him in action when I go down there tomorrow.

Apparantly the Birdman has been leading the runs since he has resumed training this week. He should be playing further up the ground in 2003!

Apparently it is only the slightest of twinges - not a full grade or low grade tear. However it should reinforce to him that he should become king of our goalsquare, not CHF.

Yep. Bad luck to Carey there, but if its any indication, he didn't look in too much distress or worry when they showed him walking back inside. Doesn't seem like its a major strain, and with about 2 weeks or so to rest and recover before preseason really hots up, he should be alright.

Can you believe the boys have to train in this heat???! Geez, sure feel for them and admire them too. At least today wasn't too bad, but the last two days, and the next two days, things will definitely get tougher.

I wondered why it was reported up until now that it was Bode & Gags winning the runs.

This explains it.

I went down to training today to see the boys. Today's outdoor session went for an hour and a half. Slavedriver Schwerdt led most of the session - starting with some warming up stuff and sprints.

Ken McGregor is over his ankle injury, he trained for the full session today.

James Gallagher came off early and I don't think he went back on. The majority of the team were doing the main session and there was a small group of players (Schell and a few others) doing handball, kicking drills away from the main oval.

After the running there was some kick to kick stuff and some defensive skills work. I was sitting the shade along the boundryand it was great to watch McLeod train.

The group then split into three squads. One squad would do laps of the oval, led by Schwerdt. The other two split into teams and played a scratch match. The squads would swap between playing the match and doing laps, which included doing push ups etc. Schwerdty really pushed em hard too.

As for the matches they played in a very narrow rectangle, which was a fair way from the edge of the oval. It was a good competitive session with some good skills. The best players were McLeod, Clarke, Goodwin, Jericho (very quick), Rutten, Burton, Mattner.

Carey injures hamstring
December 19, 2002

ADELAIDE coach Gary Ayres says he isn't fussed about a hamstring strain to his prized recruit, Wayne Carey.

While insisting the ailment was a sign of Carey's year off rather than a body in decay, Ayres is considering tightening the reins on the AFL's greatest forward of the past decade.

Carey, the former Kangaroos captain, left Adelaide's training session early yesterday with a slight hamstring strain.

"I'm not fussed about it at all," Ayres said today of the injury.

"Anyone who has been out of the game 12 months is going to have some sort of little niggle at some particular stage.

"He certainly goes hard at it.

"Maybe that's a bit of an issue for me in saying to him ... 'you're keen, you want to make a mark at a new club and what we have got to do is get you through when the real games are on'."

Ayres' eyes sparkle with excitement when talking of Carey, the strong marking forward the Crows have craved to polish offerings from a gilt-edged midfield.

Indeed, Ayres has seemingly already played out scenarios in his mind featuring Carey in a Crows jumper.

"It's a bit of a thing in a game where you can actually pump the ball in late - the scores are level, or it's tight - but you have got someone who you can look to to take a mark," Ayres said.

"It might just alleviate the pressure from us, but it also puts the pressure even more back on the opposition because they know someone is dangerous.

"And with a crumber in Ronnie Burns too, I think that will add to the structure as well."

The union of Carey and Burns, who revelled pinching goals from a forward pocket under Ayres' control at Geelong, has Crows fans expecting a rise from last season's fourth position which ended in a losing preliminary final against Collingwood.

Adelaide have also recruited AFL hardened James Begley (St Kilda) and Jason Torney (Richmond) to add weight to a belief the Crows are tantalisingly close to the top of the tree.

According to 7 & 9 news Scott Welsh will be flying to Sydney to have an operation that should fix his OP problem. he will have the same operation that Michael Voss had a few years ago.

All the best Scott! With this in mind, I hope the club errs on the side of caution tomorrow and adds another player to the senior list.

I thought they said he had already had the op??

But why did they take so long to have it done after Scotts groin complaint of last year??

Let's hope this is the end of the injury run for while.

Thanks for the update on training, Carey and Welsh, Jerome - much appreciated!! All sounds very good except for the Welsh story.

Welsh's OP is obviously no better than it was during the season. It's got me stuffed why clubs piddle around hoping these things will come good rather than getting this done at the end of September. Now he's wasted 3 months and about to have the operation that should have already been done. I might be totally wrong but I can't see him being available until well into the season now - hope I am wrong. :( Can anyone remember the deatails of how long Voss was out for etc??

Totally agree about the extra player on the senior list too.

Cheers for the training session report. That thin rectangle you mentioned seems to be what Matt Robran was talking about in one of his preseason updates on the AFC site - where they use the whole length of the ground but have shortened the width. Definitely sounded like a tough training session.

There's still quite a few players not in the main training group still, but we knew most of them like Roo, Ladhams, Stenglein, but I didn't know and was surprise to hear that Stevo was also in the restricted group. Channel 10 listed him but he's not on the AFC list. Must be the slight knee prob he had in the prelim final, I guess.

I think Channel 10 said that Welsh already had the op two days ago on Tuesday. As in, he's already back from Sydney and is now recovering. I think the report also said that it would take 3 to 4 weeks to recover, so its not that bad actually. I think that was the same recovery time with Voss -- I'm pretty sure he had it around the middle of the season this year, and was able to be back in time for finals (obviously). So, Welsh should be back around late Jan, hopefully.

macca23, I think the reason they waited on Welsh was to see if his OP could be healed completely without any surgical intervention. The report said that it wasn't responding to treatment so they decided to go for the op. I guess they were waiting out till the very last minute for the op, hoping that Welshy wouldn't need it, which seems to be the better idea b/c you don't want to perform an op unless you really need to,

Just finished praying with ya topjars!! :) The only bonus about all these injuries now is that maybe and just maybe we will get a really good run when it counts.

And thanks crowsfan - I did feel a bit better after your posting. ;)

Sorry about providing the wrong info.

Stenglien was training today. Crowsfan, in terms of the rectangle, it is fairly narrow. The boundry is set only a few metres from the point posts at each end.

IMO the idea is to train them to play straight down the field. All too often last year we would kick out wide to the boundry line and then try to deliver it to CHF or inside 50. It could be frustrating to watch. The coaching staff were standing out on the wing directing traffic during the games, getting the guys to run the ball straight down the wings.

It also reminded me of Blight's coaching. He had these rules about where the players could lead to inside the 50 - Pitto used to mention it a bit on 5AA. Blight didnt want players to lead out into a pocket or on the flanks. He wanted to set up straight shots on goal, from directly in front.

It looks like we might get a very straight style of play with improved delivery and placement of our forwards in 2003. Time will tell.

Good to hear this, because at times this year we did go wide to the flanks in the forward line although not as much as in 2001.

I'm looking forward to going to watch some training sessions after the camp on January 3 to 5, as I will still be on holidays then.
