Cricinfo: Prince returns as captain for third Test

Neil McKenzie's Test career is at the crossroads after he was dropped along with Morne Morkel for the third Test in Cape Town. Ashwell Prince will return to the side as captain to replace the injured Graeme Smith and Prince will also take Smith's role as opener, alongside the Dolphins batsman Imraan Khan, who is in line for his Test debut.

Albie Morkel has a chance to make his first Test appearance having been retained in the squad, while the uncapped fast bowler Wayne Parnell has also been included. McKenzie and Morkel have paid the price for their indifferent form during this series and McKenzie also failed to have a significant impact during the tour of Australia.

"It's disappointing for Neil, especially at this stage of his career," Smith said. "It's going to be difficult for him to come back at this stage of his career to stake a claim for this position again.

"Morne is different, he's still very young. He's got a lot of learning to do about himself. The more he bowls and plays the more he'll understand his strengths and weaknesses and what he needs to do out in the middle. Morne has a great future ahead of him, he just needs to develop."

The inclusion of Prince was not a surprise after he missed all three Tests in Australia due to a broken thumb and then failed to win back his place due to the strong form of JP Duminy. However, South Africa did not want to mess with their proven middle order so Prince will be thrust into the unfamiliar opening position.

The convenor of selectors, Mike Procter, conceded it was a risky move to play two new openers against an Australian bowling attack that had thrived in the first two Tests. "I accept that maybe it is a bit of a gamble having two new guys up front," Procter said, "but we didn't want to disrupt three, four, five and six who have been fantastic.

"Ashwell coming back, he's obviously captain. We just believe he's got the technique of an opening batsman. He hasn't opened before but he's obviously faced the new ball in the position he used to bat for South Africa when they had all the successes that they've had over the past 18 months.

"We don't feel that there's a huge change there. He was taken a little bit by surprise that he would be opening but he accepted it and he's looking forward to the challenge."

Khan, 24, is coming off a recent century against the Australians in the tour match in Potchefstroom, which swayed the selectors in his favour. With Smith to return after the Cape Town Test, Procter's panel will need to decide which of Prince or Khan will hold his place for the team's next series.

"A lot depends on what happens in Cape Town," Procter said. "A lot depends on how the guys perform at Supersport level prior to England coming here next year. I suppose you can say it's a bit of a stop-gap situation. Three, four, five and six in the line-up are pretty well cemented. They've had an unbelievable run. They're all world-class players, as Ashwell is, so we'll just take it step by step."

South Africa also named a 15-man squad for the two Twenty20 matches against Australia that follow the Tests. The uncapped Yusuf Abdulla and Roelof van der Merwe have been included while Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis will be rested.

South Africa Test squad Ashwell Prince (capt), Imraan Khan, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher (wk), Paul Harris, Albie Morkel, Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini, Wayne Parnell.

South Africa Twenty20 squad Herschelle Gibbs, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Justin Ontong, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Mark Boucher (wk), Johann Louw, Roelof van der Merwe, Albie Morkel, Johan Botha (capt), Dale Steyn, Robin Peterson, Wayne Parnell, Yusuf Abdulla.

Great to see Imraan Khan back playing Test Cricket. ;)

And it's about time that Mckenzie was dumped ...

Little suprised with the decision to drop Morkel though ...

Guess they lost patience with Morkel. He can produce the odd jaffer but seems to go the journey quite a bit. How much difference his replacement will make is another question. Albie would add to the batting and his bowling is consistent don't know how threatening.

Would've thought Imraan would open the batting. Albie Morkel isn't a test bowler for mine.

Apparently he was bowling ineffective rubbish and was mentally shaken up (im going by abc commentary here) by the fact he was being tapped about.

Amazed it has taken them this long to dump Mckenzie, he really has been a weak link in this team for a long time.

Mckenzie has been on the brink of being dropped for a little while now. Although I am a tad surprised they didnt keep him for the last test so they didnt need to get 2 new openers. Prince opening will be an interesting one I feel.

Morkel is a tad surprising especially if his brother is his replacement. Morne has struggled but while Albie will lengthen their batting, I dont think he will add anything to their bowling attack as I dont think he is a test bowler. Wouldnt be surprised if Parnell actually replaced Morne.

Whats happened with Zondeki?? Would be a good time to put him in the team. PLus he has a cool name imo.

It's a shame Tsotsobe got injured. Best left arm bowler in South Africa.

Good news for Australia though with South Africa going in the third test with a weaker squad.

I guess Morkel can still sledge Hughes when he's bringing out drinks and new inners?

Hopefully Albie gets a game. I saw his bowling in the CB series, and sayings it's terrible is giving it a compliment, he can whack the ball a fair way though.

Albie isn't a test bowler.. what are they thinking? I would've stuck with Morne seeing Tsotsobe is out.

The exclusion of Prince for the first two tests for an unconvincing McKenzie was poor selection. Alma could easily have moved into the opening role, allowing Prince to fit neatly into a particularly strong middle order, where he has been of great strength for SA. Good to see him back in.

McKenzie will still find a way to make a comeback in another 5 years.

What does Botha have to do to get a game ? He was all over our batters here in the one dayers ( surely he is worth a shot )

Harris seems like a good bloke , but he is the Seth Efrikan version of Scott Muller , maybe worse

Lousy, ineffective test bowler. His record speaks for it's self.

Botha's style of bowling will not suit test cricket anyways.

Damn. I was wondering how long we'd get humiliate McKenzie for... Not any longer.

They dropped Morne Morkel? Hah. Unreal. Their selectors must have shit for brains.

It shouldn't suit any form.

Except the world series.

Harris will be dropped for a young spinner soon

South Africa are waiting for Imran Tahir to meets his four-year residence requirement. He should be eligible by April.

Such as?

I think Ntini is the weak link in their bowling lineup. Morkel bowls a lot of shit but unplayable balls as well but our guys fear facing him most. He needs a decent bowling coach. And Harris can't bat, bowl or field. He's their equivalent of McDonald - surplus to requirements.

How can you question Harris? Cleaning bowling a defending Michael Clarke middle stump surely is of the highest quality. Either that or the probably one of Clarke's worst dismissals ever.

Really not Surprised Morne got the chop.

Seemed to be bowling a fair bit of tripe from what i saw, pretty good at getting tail enders out though...

Imran Tahir, 29 years old, average of 24.

It's out of Parnell and A.Morkel for that last spot.

If I were the selectors I would give Parnell the nod. A.Morkel is a good batsman and a very average bowler even more than his brother. I can't see an attack of Steyn, Ntini, Albie Morkel, Harris and Kallis getting us out too cheaply.

Yes, they're gradually phasing out the whiteys.

Muppet at least is out, that will be good news for his teammates.

Reckon they should play Albie and Parnell and leave out Ntini. Albie will almost be as effective with the ball and he can bat and is a gun fielder. He seemed to get the talent genes in that family, Mornay is a spud.

11 Mar 2009, 20:43
Ntini hasn't actually bowled all that bad this series and his stats reflect that.

8 wickest @ 29.50, he hasn't taken big bags of wickets but he's contributed.

A bowling attack of Steyn, Parnell, A.Morkel, Harris and Kallis?

ssfc0203
11 Mar 2009, 21:26
No Ntini? Shudder.

Attack of Steyn, Ntini, Kallis, Harris, Morkel (I'd still prefer Morne) is ideal, although Albie in for Morne. Parnell not in for mine, Albie provides a better batting option late in the order.

They've said that they want Prince to focus on his batting in his first game back, rather than having to lead the side as well.

Fair enough in my opinion.

I wonder if Kallis will bowl himself more/less. Be interesting to see how he plays himself actually.

I'm not sure if Prince will open.

With a guy making his debut opening the batting, you'd want an experienced opener in there with him.

I'd let AB open.
