To those who missed it, it was pretty interesting. As usual, a few tidbits came out.
Choco got life membership, most of the family were there for it, and the 6 new recruits were officially introduced, which was good.
Bucky revealed that Cochrane was very much one of the players that Port were trying to convince to wait a year to join the initial squad.
Choco got up and answered a few questions. Among his answers were...
* Koulouriotis will need to play 5-10 games this year to stay on the list.
* Barham wasn't kept because he couldn't get a senior game, so couldn't be judged; McKenzie was impressive but broke his arm in his last game, and now has glandular fever! Both being looked at by Carlton because "they probably won't have a draft pick for the next 5 or 10 years."
* French apparently walked out on the club in favour of Carlton.
* David Hutton has apparently been following Rob Snowdon around for the last year.
* Damon White was definitely going to figure into Mark's plans from game one this year, but with his dodgy injury and the delistment of Lockwood, they decided to pick up Champion as insurance.
* The club is debating whether they want five rookies or four - Bucky is pushing for four.
Gilham is as scrawny as his reputation...broad shoulders but no depth. Bucky seemed to think he could be played up forward.
Brett Ebert has very good arm strength by the looks, and looks the most developed of the draftees - if he can tag (which I expect he will), he'll probably be first to get a game.
Salopek is pretty tall for a midfielder, and with thick legs looks likely to be a good tackle breaker. Seemed to be the only draftee paying much attention to proceedings.
Pickett looks ready to go - I didn't realise he was as short as he is though, hardly taller than Bucky at all (my yardstick of Too Short For AFL).
Cochrane grinning his head off most of the time - seems to be enjoying himself. He does have height on his side - makes an interesting option, and they seem to be big wraps for him.
Champion didn't seem interested at all, even when Choco was talking about why he was recruited. He's probably physically ready for AFL however.

If that's the case, then if he is still around next year, we will have missed the final eight by a long, long, way. Step up or step away.

So my gut feeling was right. Traitor. *Crosses him off her Christmas Card list*

I can vouch for that. I'll take a picture sometime. Its amazing.

He's chipper, thats for sure. Likes to take it all in. Great bloke - has his head screwed on properly.

V. short, isnt he. Ah well. Doesnt hinder his hip 'n' shoulder ability, anyhow.

I like the sound of this bloke. His attitude strikes me as a possibility for a new Cult Hero. Dont think he was too popular with the 'roos fans, but I think he'll be up there with our lot.

Did he have a bit of stubble? *Wonders whether the razors would still come in handy for next year* <-- inside joke.

Thanks for the info Porthos. Would have liked to have gone but couldn't make it myself. I'll pass this on to some of my other footy starved comrades! Cheers :D

Why the doubt, Eddie? Surely you know that Paul is one of the best players on the team, but has been disadvantaged by factors beyond the control of both him and the Power. I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet.

Thanks for the info Porthos......:D
As usual nothing about the AGM was reported up here or on the AFL websites..........

If Choco is saying 5-10, I think he will make Koula a project player this year. And with Borchard out of the way at Westies I think you could at least see Koula putting in senior SANFL this year. Those idiots who were saying he was left out last yearbecause of "team balance" had no idea what they were talking about.
So I wouldn't worry about the 5-10 games. But he had better show a bit more in those games than Michael Stevens did in his 17. The gold pass won't be on offer in 2003.

I had the impression that Roo's fans thought he was labelled a tagger by Pagan and never really given a good go at showing all that he really had to offer. I was of the belief that most of them liked him but thought it was in his best interest to move on and start again.

"Project player" does seem to be a favorite term used down in Pap land,
how many will that make for next year if Koulo is also added to the project list??

"Past their prime" is a term used to describe most of the cows new inclusions, how many of them do you have in the tool shed?

More than one Koula may be more than you or I can handle...

Everyone has "project players". Whether you use a particular term or just say "we'll give him a go" doesn't matter.

With Port Adelaide's strong line-up, unless you have a heap of injuries I just couldn't see him getting into your best 22. You already have Pickett, Cochrane and Wilson to absorb into the team. Who could he possibly displace??? I think he's gone!!
By the way, Porthos, very interesting summary. I was wondering about McKenzie because he does look like a good player in the making.

Doesn't matter how strong a team is to be worthy of a spot in the team. If players, in this case Paul have an excellent injury free pre-season and play well in practice games, it warrants their spot in the team for the start of the season and beyond.
For example look at Aaron Shattock. He made it into the team round 10 or something. He stayed in the team for the rest of the year even though he played limited football during the games. There is Robert Copeland the year before aswell in a strong team. Did good stuff to warrant his spot in the team.
All Paul needs to do is display good talent and do good stuff when he is given the chance and he will stay in the team.

Well said SB!!!
BTW, when was it that Choco said that Paul would be in the 22 if he stayed injury-free long enough??
When Choco said that Koula would need to play 5-10 games next year or he was gone, could he have meant 5-10 SANFL games?

What, you mean all 2 of them. Out of a total of 8 new players, I'd hardly say that is most of them. BTW the satement is wrong anyway, hopefully it'll come back to bite you on the bum.

The term "most" may be out of place, but the most talked about cow recruits this year are certainly past their prime, along with a few existing players that are also past their best.

AFL. Because SANFL games are really useless to the Power, aren't they?

What a stupid comment!! every club has players on there list that are [as you put it] past their best including a few down in Pap land Wanganeen & Paxman are 2 that come to mind,
But on the other hand i think Bicks & Nigel have both found a new lease of life & could go on for a few years yet,;)

Yeah, of course Bicks has a new lease of life... in the media, 'cos he sure as hell won't last long on the footy field!

Charon (pronounced Ki-RON), just happens to be somewhere near Pluto... actually it's classified as a moon of Pluto, but sometimes considered a planet within itself. ALF, on the television show of the same name, called it 'Alvin'.

Thanks Noddy, but what i was getting at is the cows have recruited players (while not most) in Carey & Burns (who are the only ones you hear about) who are obviously past their prime. Port seem to pick players either at their peak or with a lot of improvement/developement in them. I know what i'd rather have.
