Mates and myself often have a chuckle formulating accusations of 'very long bow' cover bandism, where one artist is labelled a rip-off of another, but usually through some very loose association that wouldn't really hold up under scrutiny.

EG : The slightest similarity in just one sound of one song, or even a slight lookalike, or a relevant action.

Sometimes they're good calls, other times awful straw-clutches of the most hopeful kind.

An example of a fair call would be : Black Crowes - Rolling Stones cover band.

A very long bow might include Meatloaf - Queen Cover band.

One I'd been most proud of was :
Tori Amos - Kate Bush cover band.

But perhaps there's a new kid on the block.

(Warning, rather bad taste)

How about : Michael Jackson - Eric Clapton cover band?

I actually don't know Stray Cats, but a mate of mine (who posts very rarely under 'FitzroyRamone') actually reckons Billy Idol is a Stray Cats cover band.

As I don't know them, I can't comment.

That should probably read 'try hard' v.spy v.spy cover band. The Spys were pretty political.
Mob, in all fairness to Billy Idol (huh?) "Generation X" were around for a while before the Stray Cats. Were The Stray Cats a Generation X cover band?:D

I haven't really got any new additions, but would disagree with two calls.
Living End def. Stray Cat cover band, not v spy v spy.
Oasis not Kinks cover band but Beatles cover band, this ones been made plenty of times.
But if you wish to have a Kinks cover band you cant go past Blur who seem to have adopted Ray Davies' whimsical, quintessential English writing style, particularly before the One album.

Rammstein is a Ministry cover band.

I tend to agree with Living End being a Stray Cats cover band rather than v.Spy.vs. Spy.
What about Green Day being a Jam cover band?

The Living End actually did start out as a Stray Cats cover band.

Avril Lavigne is doing Tiffany and with a bit of luck her career will have the same longevity.

Spot on - Living End began around 1992 as a Stray Cats cover band and called themselves "The Runaway Boys" which just happened to be the name of Stray Cat's debut single in 1980!

Not having a go at you dogwatcher, Oasis use more David Bowie/Stone Roses/T-Rex stuff than the Beatles. But to anyone that hasn't heard all of the Albums the easiest thing to say is that. Just using 2 bars of John Lennon's imagine in 'Don't Look Back in Anger' does not make the whole song a complete rip off :o.

Turn that page, Mobben. I've seen Jon English (and the Foster Brothers, his back up band) a couple of times (er, nearly 20 years ago) and they would have to be among the most entertaining gigs I've ever been to. You didn't realise how many hits he had until he sang them all. A real performer.

I won't be harsh enough to judge them a "cover" band of the strength of one song, but has anyone heard Death In Vegas' "Scorpio Rising" ?
The music is a "little" close to "Pictures of Matchstick men" by Status Quo(later cover by Camper Van Beethoven).
