March 22, 2009
The second season of the Indian Premier League will not be held in India. At the BCCI working commitee meeting today in Mumbai, a decison is believed to have arrived at, to stage the tournament outside the country, due to extraordinary circumstances.
England and South Africa have emerged as the frontrunners to host the event. "All 59 games will begin at 4:00 pm IST and the second game will begin at 8:00 pm IST as per schedule," said Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman. He also said there will be no changes made to the format or the schedule. An official announcement was expected soon.

not terribly surprising

No surprising, although I doubt it could go ahead in England this time of year with the weather. A lot of games would be washed out, and most pitches in April/May are green tops (I'm sure Brett Lee would love this).

Does this mean Pakistani players will be allowed to participate now?

I don't think that Pakistani players will be available as all the IPL teams bought foreign players to make up for them and their quota's of 10 players per team are full.

It will probably occur in South Africa although I don't understand why they cannot at least consider Australia. Each team could be allocated a city, Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and two others: Cairns, Darwin, etc.

When AFL starts we won't have the stadiums. Most venues have ripped out their drop in pitches or made the centre squares footy friendly.

Would be too hard in Australia with NRL, AFL and Rugby to contend with

Yeach you are right, forgot about the other sports. Still it seems that South Africa has and will be hosting a number of Cricket series, 20/20 World cup, IPL possibly, Champions League in a year is alot as well as test series etc.

If these events were played in summer over here, we would be hosting lots of things

RSA is the obvious choice.

It's sunny in England at the moment, but I doubt that'll be the case in 3 or 4 weeks time. Plus the eejits at the ECB would no doubt start demanding that more England players are involved.

Isn't England in deep recession?

Would they be able to hold it?

The 20/20 World Cup was done really well in South Africa last time.

I'm sure they'll be able to host it well, though this doesn't bode well for people who want to stay up late and watch it ...

Setanta Sports will go bankrupt and then I won't be able to watch the footy.

Not a massive surprise.

I suppose South Africa would be the best place. Australia has all those other sports to contend with, England is getting into the rainy season (well, what they call the rainy season, anyway), Pakistan is Pakistan, Sri Lanka may be a touch too small, Zimbabwe and Kenya are obviously out, New Zealand is in the midst of Super 14 and is too small, whilst the West Indies have Stanford's problems to contend with.

They will probably have to change the name, however. IPL in South Africa would seem a bit odd. Maybe SPL?

So if the games were to be held in England, what time would they start local if the Indian times are to be retained? Same for RSA?

Mid afternoon, maybe 1.30pm compared to 7pm Indian time. Won't happen in England, Counties will be using the grounds and they will not play on any grounds of teams who have ICL players which rules out a lot of places, Kent, Hampshire, Derbyshire, Sussex, Warwickshire, The Oval, Northamptonshire and Worcestershire and maybe a few more.

The reason the IPL is being moved away from India is because the national elections are on. And the government has said that the elections come first and everything else is second, it's as simple as that.

How do the National Elections affect the cricket though?

Well because the army and para military will be need for more important protection duty's. The national elections are huge in India, imagine 1.2 billion people going to vote, it would be a ideal situation for a terrorist attack. And if the IPL goes ahead and IF there is a terrorist attack on people voting then it's not going to be good for the government.

Oh, I see. I forgot about the threat of terrorism.

A terrorist attack can happen in any country at any time. The sick bastards have no love for life, and would do anything to fulfill their disgusting agendas.
