Kane Cornes scorches on the track

Kane Cornes celebrated signing a long-term contract with Port Adelaide – as did his older brother, Chad – by scorching through a 2.2-kilometre time trial in sweltering heat in the North Adelaide parklands on Friday.

Kane, 20 on January 5 (Chad was 23 last month), clocked a personal-best 6 min. 49 sec. – just five seconds outside Michael Wilson’s club record set at the Power’s first pre-season training session five weeks ago.

Others prominent in Friday morning’s time trial, which preceded a lively workout with footballs in the grounds opposite the Adelaide University gymnasium, were Josh Francou (7.06), Domenic Cassisi (7.10), Nick Stevens (7.12), Steven Salopek (7.20), Matthew Primus (7.21), Warren Tredrea (7.24) and Chad Cornes (7.26). (Wilson was told to run at only a leisurely pace).

Interesting result considering Salopek reckons the major area he has to work on is pace. As always, I'd love to know who finished last.

Of Port’s expectations for 2003, Williams said: “Our expectations are probably similar to what they were last season. We’re probably even more confident about this (coming) year than we were (this time) last year.”

Asked to name youngsters who had impressed in the first block of pre-season work (the Power breaks now and switches on again at Alberton Oval at 9am on January 2), Williams said: “Dom Cassisi really stands out. He has impressed. He played a few games last season, so he’ll be pushing to get into the side.

“Adam Morgan has shown a bit – and Toby Thurstans. I hope they play a significant role in the Wizard Cup, and see how far they go from there.”

It sounds promising - here's hoping he follows through.

“But in the previous games we really did try to give people opportunities. We’ll be doing similar things again this time. As we work our way through the Cup, if we get towards the finals we’ll be pretty serious again because it’s terrific money.”

Should we take this to mean that we'll either lose first round or try to win the whole thing?

It isn't important, we won our last pre-season cup game against them, and most people don't recall it.

From what I have heard I gather it is his sprinting pace as opposed to his long distance pace. He has great endurance, it was his pace over 20 or so metres that he identified as an area he would like to improve on.

Great news that the Cornes boys have signed long term contracts with the club, helps us to be more confident about the future.

Thankfully their mother was the major influence in their lives.

Actually it is important to the supporters of both clubs up here..............and would also benefit the club by further exposing the club to a relatively new and un-tapped market membership wise.

By the end of last season we were getting 100+ people out to watch our games and we know there are many more supporters out there that would get involved if the club were up here for the game and associated promotions it would involve.

I understand people's comments as I think the comp sounds a little silly but there are other benefits to be realised by the clubs that compete up here in the second round game.

Had to love Kane's comments about only wanting to play for the one club and it's probably one of the few times a comment like that can be believed given today's 'career footballers'

"When you are young and you get drafted you always want to stay at the same club for your whole career. I know a lot of people say that but it’s a big thing for me,” Kane said.

For Darwin people I can understand, but if the AFL were competent in organising a chook raffle we would have played there last year as well.

However, in the context of future bragging rights etc etc, it isn't important ;)

I agree with your comments on the AFL and bragging rights but after the last couple of years I actually think our club (and most others besides Essendon) under value the benefits of exposure up here..........

There is an un-tapped market to be exploited which would bring in new fans and more importantly memberships for the club.

Kevin Sheedy and Michael Long would be up here at least 2-3 times every year to promote footy in general as well as their club. Even North Melbourne managed to get Pagan up here this season for a some promotions........

What I find disappointing is a lot of work was done by the club to promote itself when they played up here 2 years but because no follow up visits have been done this has practically been forgotten about.

We even offered to pay the airfare/accomodation costs of flying someone up for a similar trip but had little interest from the club.

We know there are a few players that come up here each year but for some reason the club doesn't make them available to help in promotions............they could learn a thing or two from Andrew McLeod who is always happy to help out when up here.

Ah, the bigger picture, some people often over look it. Yep a win in the preseason showdown won't hurt us in the least both up in the NT or down here in SA. Can't really measure what a couple of preseason wins and a bit of exposure does for a clubs bottom line, but it doesn't hurt thats for sure.

As for bragging rights we already have them so the result it terms of them doesn't really mean a lot to us.
