I think he deserves a thread.:thumbsu:
This is a thread to talk tactics, bag him, praise him and of course he CAN be selected in the Buddy Draft.

"If you're not good at managing people, you're probably going to fall flat on your face," Parkin said.
"He's a great people person, an extremely good listener and he's got a fundamental understanding of how the game should be played, particularly the modern game.
"In many ways he was leading us (the coaching staff) in forming of a game plan and I don't think any player I've ever coached was able to influence our thinking as often or accurately as 'Ratts' could."
I don't like the sound of a positive comment from the AFL legend who was on the sub-committee that re-appointed Alastair Clarkson.
Doesn't Parkin read DBLUES' posts?
We should have formed a committee who would decide on the committee that would go through the process of finding a replacement for Pagan.

Brett Ratten and Michael Voss test mettle (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,26018631-5012432,00.html)
"Well, Chris Judd is a touch faster than him ... but seriously, what I knew of Brett Ratten as a player was as a fantastic competitor able to draw the most out of himself and I think he does the same thing as a coach for his playing group," Voss said.
"Whenever you get that happening -- you aren't surprised they have ended up in a final because I know Brett, like we are here, is going to be prepared. That he has been able to draw the best out of his players is a credit to him and is a sign of a great coach."

Both Carlton and Ratten are works in progress, and the judgments on club and coach cannot be made for at least another 12 months, if not longer. But by reaching the finals this year and winning 13 games with a young, developing team, without Jarrad Waite for most of the season, Ratten and the Blues have done as well as anyone could reasonably expect this year; they won 10 games last year, and to reach 13 represents the required level of improvement, or slightly better.

Great job to get us into September, still learning with the team. A few things can be improved, but he is taking us in the right direction, and the big positive is that he loves the club 110%.

Brett Ratten sets for goals for Blues (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/brett-ratten-sets-for-goals-for-blues/story-e6frf9jf-1225827478210)
"It's just like I told the lady who bailed me up this week; we have had 51 inside 50s each week, so we will get the ball in plenty of times," Ratten said.
"I suppose the percentages that we kicked the ball to him (Fevola) compared to the rest of the team was two to one, so we think, from a percentage point of view, we will still get those opportunities."
"I think we can still maintain a high level of scoring," the coach said.
"I suppose everyone has their own philosophy in coaching, about whether you defend or attack first."
Ratten has an opinion on this footy conundrum, but prefers to keep it within the confines of the club.

Ratten Q&A (http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/4311/newsid/90649/default.aspx)
JP: In terms of the way you want to play the game can we expect anything different from the Blues this year?
BR: Maybe we'll be a bit more stop-start in our flow. The speed that we've played with, which was a 'helter-skelter' type footy in periods, actually opened us up at times. I think the balance is there, but it's about trying to read the play. When we've got momentum we want to use it effectively and when the opposition's got momentum we've got to be able to decrease the speed of the game as much as possible.
That balancing act is very hard because you can get an over-correction and you can play slow for too long or quick for too long. We tried to monitor our speed last year and we seemed to play a lot quicker for the majority of the time, which sometimes works really well but can open you up on the other side of the equation.

Forward thinking (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/forward-thinking-20100317-qfn2.html)
Waite is one of those players Ratten refers to as his recruits. There were the obvious ones - Brock McLean, Henderson and top draft pick Kane Lucas - the latter pair Ratten figures already for 10-year players. But also the ''old recruits'' - Waite, Robert Warnock, Michael Jamison and even Andrew Walker, who only played the last six games last year after a shoulder injury.
''We have virtually got new recruits into our club without even trading for them or doing anything for them, so that is a huge plus for us,'' the coach said.
''I think it was a plus to win 13 games [without those players], so you think that is a fantastic result for our club. But I think the way we play at times didn't allow us to control the game, whether we had the ball or didn't have the ball. That is something we have worked on.''

Ratten scores a year's grace (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/ratten-scores-a-years-grace-20100331-reuy.html)
But whether Carlton gains or loses in the short- and longer-term - and I believe it will eventually prosper from the decision - the trade has bought Ratten two precious commodities: time and diminished expectations.
Expectation is the great enemy of all coaches, since it ramps up the pressure to achieve immediate results. By losing Fevola, Ratten has hosed down hopes to the point that he doesn't have to make the eight to keep his job. Fevola has gifted Ratten with an alibi. The Carlton hierarchy is realistic about where this team stands and if Ratten is yet to prove himself as a long-term coach, it would take a catastrophic turn of events - a fall-out with the Pratt family or a player rebellion perhaps - for him to lose his job for 2011.
Ratten scores a year's grace (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/ratten-scores-a-years-grace-20100331-reuy.html)
The article is a bit of a backhanded compliment for Ratten.
Agree with the premise that sacking Fevola might take some of the pressure off.
Dumping Fevola will be a fringe benefit that will Ratten him to experiment and tinker with our forwardline like the article suggests.
Roos or Malthouse won't coach Carlton.
No thanks.

Ratten's mood mellows, but Blues still do it hard on track (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/rattens-mood-mellows-but-blues-still-do-it-hard-on-track-20100413-s7lb.html)
In the event, yesterday's training session was not full-ground match practice of the variety threatened by the coach because, once the initial anger calmed, the reasoned voices of medicos and conditioning staff advised that that form of heavy training would be counter-productive at this stage of the season.
But while it was not full-ground match practice, Carlton yesterday was put through tight, competitive play that got willing at times.
The session went twice as long as a regular Tuesday training run, leaving the players in no doubt about the coach's message.

As much as I think ratten is a sh** coach, he must not get all the blame.
The reason he cannot play the game style he wants is because of one man - wayne hughes.
This bloke continuously pick players with shocking kicking style and also continues to say that when they are picked that they have great kicking skills. Anderson, Robinson, walker, davies, benjamin, hartlett, armfeld, and so many more. It's not how far or how penetrating your kick is, it's whether you can hit a target under pressure, like hawthorn, bulldogs and many other quality teams do. Hughes must go. He is the main reason we have no hope until we clean out the back end of our list again.
Now as far as ratten goes - he gets outcoached 22 games of the home and away season. The only reason we win games is due to chris judd or absolute crap teams like ninthmond.
Showing that he was happy with how we played against brisbane expresses that he accepts mediocrity. Would paul roos be happy with any loss? The only thing we did well against brisbane was win the contested ball and play well for 1 1/2 qtrs. He must go as well.
We need a coach who can get the best out of each and every player like Paul roos does. Every trade he does, the incoming player responds to him and plays their best career footy - eg's such a bolton, seaby, mcglyn and many others.
I'ts time the board make the hard decision, even if sticks is mates with him.
We got judd to win another flag. Now if we do not act now, the trade was pointless, and we lose big time on the trade itself.
C'mon sticks swanny - ACT NOW!

Very insightful.
Obviously you are one of those supporters who accepts mediocrity.
Shame - you should really barrack for richmond then.
How can you not agree with what I've said.
Do you think hughes is a good recruiter? Do you think ratten ever outcoaches his opponent?
Do you ever want to watch our club as a top 4 premier contender again? Becasue if you do you, you should take off your 'I LOVE RATTEN' AND 'I LOVE HUGHES' hat and start to accept the truth of the matter - that is that ratten and hughes must go!

The Blues are better than many of us suspected, and the coach deserves much of the credit.
After the hugely disappointing performance against Essendon in Round 3, he tipped out Jarrad Waite and Bret Thornton for the first trip to Adelaide.
It was a bold move, a bold statement, too, and it worked.
Check out the "quarters won" column on Super Ladder.
Geelong is on top with 22 of a possible 32, Collingwood and Carlton are next on 21. Wins aside, that's the best endorsement of a team's progress.

Ratts' pack is delivering (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/ratts-pack-is-delivering-20100610-y0g5.html)
When Ratten took over the Blues conceded an average 132 points a game. They were the worst defensive team in the AFL.
In 2008, it was reduced to 107 points, in 2009 it was 94 points and this year its down to 86. Why? A defensive mindset has been entrenched into the players' skulls. The forwards fight desperately to keep the ball in. The midfielders are more accountable when there is a turnover and run deep into defence to help out. And the overall defensive pressures of the team are very good.
The Blues are ranked third for tackles, second for reducing opposition kicking efficiency and second for conceding opposition disposals.
In short, they force errors and deny the opposition the ball. And the Blues have been consistent in their pursuits. A good indicator of the team's work rate is the number of quarters won. Geelong leads the way with 33. Carlton is next with 28. It augurs well for the future.

Blowing Harvey's trumpet:Rohan Connolly's 2010 coaches ladder (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/blowing-harveys-trumpet-20100625-z9p8.html)
Carlton coach Brett Ratten cops more flak from his own fans than perhaps any of his rivals, but is just outside the top eight. The obvious knock on the Blues, and by extension their coach, is their capacity, as in the past fortnight, to drop games they are expected to win. But while the highs and lows haven't been evened out enough yet, the highs, two beltings of Geelong and St Kilda, have been spectacular. His faith in Jordan Russell has been rewarded in the emergence of a fine player off half-back for the Blues, and Mitch Robinson is making his presence felt more.
Most of all, though, Ratten reshaped a forward set-up that nobody expected to kick enough goals in the absence of the departed Brendan Fevola, but has proved almost as productive, and did it with dare, unleashing the whippy sharpshooting trio of Eddie Betts, Jeff Garlett and Chris Yarran. ''Brendan who?'' quips King.
9. BRETT RATTEN (Carlton)
Still wears supporter flak, but has dragged improvement out of many, and reorganised forward set-up so well Fevola has barely been missed.

''I wanted to be a part of it with the players as well, and give them feedback and really reward those blokes who were doing what's required and then maybe question the blokes who need to maybe go in a bit,'' Ratten said.
''I really enjoyed it, it was good - you felt like you were a part of the game.
''Sometimes being in the box you've got some control to a degree, but with [interchange] rotations at 130 and 140 [per game] and things like that, sometimes you feel that you're not actually in the game as much.''

What does our coach need to do to get the vultures off his back? Personally he has grown as much as our team in my eyes but really gets no credit be it from the mainstream media or the morons on bf. Sadly I have the feeling that anything less than a top 4 finish next year will see the vultures circling.
