View Full Version : Should Hogg be the all-rounder?

I don't think it would be a bad idea if we are without Warne. We need someone that we can rely on to bowl atleast 7 overs, and I don't know if we can rely on Watson to do so. I think Hogg could be a better option in South Africa. It also gives us the option of him playing with 4 other pace bowlers (if Warne is out), or with another spinner (MacGill). Watson is a decent player, but I don't know if he suits the side. His batting is OK, but his strike rate is less than 70 which is pretty poor considering where he comes in, and he concedes a fair bit of runs when bowling. I think he would get hit around a bit in South Africa. Including Hogg gives the side some flexibility, and he is a very good fielder. Thoughts?

Hogg will not suit the Sth African pitches, they are too quick for his left armers, he would get carted out the grounds.
Wouldn't surprise me now that Warnes out that we would carry the extra paceman and make Boof the all rounder to bowl the odd 4 or 5 overs.

*SHRUGS* He couldn't be much worse than Harvey or Symonds. Let's see how Shane Watson goes first.

Then we would need Lehmann to bowl 10 if we was going to be the all rounder. I think McGrath, Gillespie, Lee, Bichel, Hogg and Lehmann would be a nice bowling line up.

which means - batting order would be ..
1 Hayden
2 Gilchrist
3 Ponting
4 Martyn
5 Lehmann
6 Bevan
7 Hogg
8 Lee
9 Bichel
10 Gillespie
11 McGrath

- could be ok - Lehmann/Hogg share 10 overs - then there is Bevan ;-)

Hogg did ok last night. He was probably a tad nervous (he was running around like he had ADD!) and also the ball was very wet because of the dew and rain.

I like the look of dezzmo's side - very strong and powerful.

With the bouncy, seaming pitches in NZ, I think this is the best line up...

Gilchrist
Hayden
Ponting
Lehmann
Martyn
Blewett
Bevan
Watson
Lee
Gillespie
McGrath

20 overs to come from Watson, Blewett, Lehmann and Martyn.

If Bevan is at no. 7, why would you want Watson there? You might as well play another front line bowler.

And NZ? Don't you mean SA?

This would be my 1st choice line up for the World Cup in SA:

Gilchrist
Hayden
Ponting
Martyn
Lehmann
Bevan
Watson
Warne
Lee
Gillespie
McGrath

12th Man: Bichel

Watson showed last night that he is definitley up to International Level, unlike Ian Harvey. What Hookes said about Harvey is a joke, Harvey rarely gets into double figures with the bat and his bowling would is a lot worse than Watson's.

By the way, where was Gillespie last night? I have been away on holiday so I haven't heard any cricket news.

OOppps..

I would utilise Watson as a pinch hitter. Put him in when the situation is say 2/180 after 30, and get to him to go hammer and tongs. Bevan isn't quick enough in the initial few overs and martyn has struggled in those situations as well. Australia needs to be able to drive the knife in when right on top.
