This is weird.
Yesterday I woke up to my clock radio/CD alarm.
Ring ring 7 a.m.
Move yourself to go again
Cold water in the face
Brings you back to this awful place ...
Today I woke up to a phone call from a friend in Adelaide with the news.
It was as if Joe himself was saying ...
NEWS FLASH !
Vacuum cleaner sucks up budgie
Bye bye.
I'm completely shattered by this. It won't just be London Calling that's gets a spin in this house ... Give Em Enough Rope, Sandinista, Combat Rock and that wonderful first Clash album will also get a workout.
My most enduring memory of Joe Strummer was after the Thebarton gig in 1981 or thereabouts. The Clash allowed the fans backstage after the gig. I remember seeing Joe, with his slicked back hair, sitting at a table talking quietly with a whole lot of Adelaide's punks while I shared a joint with Mick Jones. It was surreal. And the thing that grabbed me the most about Joe was that here he was, an icon of punk rock, sitting quietly at a table with people I knew, chatting away. Somehow I'd always imagined he'd be a hell-raiser. To me he looked more like a distinguished British gentleman.
And that's how I'll always think of Joe Strummer ... as a gentleman.
The world needs more people like Joe Strummer ... sadly, today there is one less.
The winds of fear
Whip away the sickness
The message on the tablet
Was "Valium"
As the planets form
That golden cross, Lord
I'll see you on
The Holy Crossroads

Later Joe...
He also did some fine work out front of The Pogues when they gave him the spot after kicking out Shane McGowan.

Well as a product of the English public schoool system I suppose the aim was to turn out a gentleman even if at the time of the Clash he described his schooling as '......a kind of private comprehensive*':D .
Your experiences fit in with everything I've read about him Alf, every article seems to have people rememebring what a decent fellow he was & indeed a GENTLE-man.
*Comprehensive schools are state run schools in England.
Yeah this was sad news, especially coming at a time when most of the media were waffling on about which manufactured group would get Christmas number 1, like it mattered:rolleyes:
Talking about what a gentleman he was, the news showed footage of him playing a gig for free recently to give support to the striking British firefighters. What more can you say, RIP Joe.

Thanks for the tip off DK (and PM).
The Clash tracks (apart from "I Fought the law" which is a "put together" video) were available on a video from the late 80's "THIS IS VIDEO CLASH". Naturally I'm hoping for a re-release on DVD. The version of "Should I stay or should I go" is live and really rocks out as it's done faster than the original studio one.Keep an extra ear out for that one.I haven't seen the "Love Kills" or "Gangsterville" videos for years so really looking forward to those and don't recall seeing the video to "Yalla Yalla"(my fav: Joe solo track) so also looking forward to that.
As a side thought I wonder if any footage of Joe was taken when he and the Mescaleros toured with the Big Day Out a couple of years back. The Melbourne spot was excellent by the way.
The hitscene stuff is like the stuff my mum use to listen to in 1970. If anyone ever tells you Australian music has ALWAYS been great point them in the direction of the Issy Dy and Marty Rhone tracks. They prove that OZ rock(despite being pretty good) has from time to time got de-railed over the years.

Have you got the The Clash - Westway To The World DVD........
Sounds like a good one although disappointing there are no actual full songs shown on the original video but this appears to have been changed with the DVD extras............
The Clash - Westway To The World broadly chronicles the history of The Clash from its beginnings in 1976 through to the departure of Mick Jones in 1983. The story is told through the aegis of newly filmed interview material with the four members of the band, along with former drummer Terry Chimes (he was the drummer on the debut album), rock journo Tony Parsons, photographer Pennie Smith (it is her brilliant photo that graces the album cover of London Calling), a former roadie (Johnny Green) and producer Bill Price. All the interviews are conducted separately, probably as there is still some bad blood between the band members, and are interspersed with still photographs and archival live footage. The story is broadly told in chronological fashion, although there are a few odd jumps here and there.
Despite the potential for glossing over things that perhaps should not be aired, this is one of those rare occasions where we get to know the band warts and all. Mistakes are readily admitted, regrets are openly expressed and hindsight and insights abound. If you have any interest whatsoever in one of the best bands to ever grace the music business, then you will find this an incredibly interesting eighty minutes. Interesting not just because of the at-times frank interview material but also because of some of the quite rare archival live material. The one big regret about the programme is that it is too short and we never get the full version of any of the dozens of songs that are interspersed throughout the show. Offsetting that though is the interview material and whilst some is a bit naff, there is plenty of interest in what Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon have to say about things. That it is finally here is a great joy and if you have any interest in the band in particular or the era in general, this is an essential addition to the collection.
DVD Extras
Menu - Nothing highly exciting other than some decent audio enhancement - which we would of course expect from The Clash!
Featurette - Clash On Broadway (22:30)
A short film by Don Letts regarding the rather unusual seventeen show stand the band performed in New York in 1981. Some of the material is used in the main programme but this is interesting in its own right, with most of the input coming from Topper Headon. Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, it is not 16x9 enhanced and comes with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. Nice one.
Interviews - Cast (44:51)
This is a bunch of additional interview material from the four band members, partly expanding on bits seen in the main programme as well as covering topics not in the main programme. As is general for the whole package, the bulk of the material comes from Joe Strummer, but some of the most interesting comes from the least profiled member, Topper Headon. Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, it is not 16x9 enhanced and comes with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. In the main this adds nicely to the main programme and is well worth checking out.
Discography
Covering all twelve albums, the interesting thing is that each album is highlighted by, as far as I can make out, a complete song from the album shown. This is a really big plus and for those not so familiar with the band is a great way to gain some exposure to their work. Huge thumbs up for this.
Gallery - Photo (2:28)
A self running piece comprising about fifty eight photos of the band, presented in a general 1.66:1 framing. It is not 16x9 enhanced and is accompanied by a dub mix of Rock The Casbah in Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. Another thumb up for this!

Thanks for that DK. I went on a "half hearted" hunt for it the other day but that stopped when I found "The complete Jam"(as mentioned on another threat). I say half hearted as I'd already taped "Westway to the world" on SBS during last year and so had already seen and had a copy. But now I know about the extras I'll have to get it ASAP.
Had a weird moment yesterday. Watching a "behind the music" special about 1977 on Musicmax there was an interview with Joe talking about the death of Elvis. Creepy, spooky and very sad.

Cheapest I've found it so far is $24.95 through DVD Plaza which is mentioned in another thread - but from what I can tell there are 2 formats PAL and NTSC - should be ok for the DVD player but some older/cheaper TV's can't handle NTSC.

The information about Rage tonight was most greatly appreciated. I got it all on tape ...
The post-Clash stuff was pretty interesting. I completely lost touch with Joe Strummer's career after The Clash, so I was hearing (and seeing) that stuff for the first time.
I must say, whoever it was who bagged Marty Rhone (LL, I think) has done the boy a great disservice. That song, "Pop Singer" was brilliant. Not only did he take on Johnnie Farnham and Russell Morris ... but he also took a beautiful swipe at Elvis and Dylan while he was at it. Top shelf exercise in urinepreneurialism.
However, I must say I draw the line at Issy Di ... couldn't stand the slimy bastard then ... and 30 years hasn't improved my impression of him.

It's halfway through the Clash set up here in Darwin at the moment and I've got my fingers crossed the current storm doesn't cut the power and stop the tape............
I'll reserve judgement on the Hit Scene clips...........:D
PS......I've just ordered a copy of Underground In The City of Churches - will be interesting to see your pic in there.......and will get back to you later in the week about the MP3's.........
