This has probably been discussed to death here, but...

Did anyone else notice in the Saturday papers that Carlton has admitted they would be insolvent and would have had to appoint an administrator if the AFL hadn't agreed to advance them their yearly dividend, including the proceeds of the Waverley sale.

Bugger me, I thought. That sounds familiar. Didn't the AFL refuse to advance Fitzroy its AFL dividend in 1995 and 1996? I will check my facts in Hore-Lacy's book the next chance I get but if this is true it is a complete disgrace. Does anyone know what ian Collins' involvement with the AFL was at that time? It would be very interesting if he had anything to do with that decision.

I suspect I'm going to spend Boxing Day penning a letter to the editor over this.

please see my previous email regarding collins. people on the inside when fitzroy was at deaths door, viewed collins as an evil, calculating assassin. you would be shocked to hear how instrumental he was in the death of fitzroy from behind the public face of oakley.

you are spot on on the advanced dividends, and of course the financial assistance to clubs these days would also have kept us alive.

collins = king maggot.

I hadn't heard about that (had other things going on) but GOD THAT MAKES ME SICK. :mad: The one thing I did hear was about Carlton's $7million+ debt and THAT was enough to totally p*** me off!!!!!! :mad:

For me it's not about which club it is or anything, it's just that THEY get all the help we were refused and GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. :mad:

Maybe I should turn all this anger into a letter too. ;)

With Carlton running up a loss this season of $7.6m and having net debts of just over $15m it makes you wonder. Fitzroy had net debts in 1996 of around $4m (not totally sure but was under Carlton's loss for the season).

Blackers you are correct in the dividend details for 1995 & 96 from the AFL.

It comes down to this - the TV contract with the consortium of 9, 10 and Foxtel is for a 16 team competition if one club goes under and is not replaced then the contract is void and the do not have to pay up as the AFL has breached the conditions of the contract by not suppling a 16 team competition. The contract last for 5 years so only 4 more seasons and then the mergers will happen.

Did the Blues have to provide anything to the AFL before getting the Waverley money?

The Roos had to put together an AFL-approved business plan before we got any money, I would be annoyed if the Blues did not have to do the same thing, surely they should have had to show the AFL how they are going to reduce their $15.5Million debt first...

Good call. Carlton should, if we are to have a level playing field here, be required to show that it can trade out. Personally, I reckon they probably could, but that doesn't change the fact that they need to give evidence of same.

Would you believe that a prospective director of the CFC contacted the FFC in September to discuss the Roy's problems in 1996. When you are in the Afl, you are either a wanted franchise or a no longer required franchise. We were no longer required. At least we are a Club, unlike Carlton and we are still in business with no debts and a future. The next two years are going to see the greatest changes in football since the game started. In the meantime the FITZROY Reds will take out the 2003 D2 flag and progress to D1. The u19s will be a great success.
Long Live FITZROY
