2002: Dissapointment is the only word that truly descrives Ches year this year. In 2001 he had his best year of AFL football having more Disposals, Marks, Goals, Tackles, and Inside 50s than any other year he has had. In fact he assisted in more goals in 2001 than any other AFL player. He was in All Australian contention. He had to have a year like that otherwise he would of been delisted. He saved his skin.
2002 was completely different. He kicked 2 or more goals on only 3 occasions in 2002, compared to 15 times in 2001. He kicked only half the amount of goals in 2002 than he did last year. Now, he has to fight to retain his spot on the list further than next year.
It all started in the pre season, where he had a poor campaign, kicking only 1 goal (in the Final) in the 3 pre season matches he played. His start to the main season however was reasonable. He kicked 10 goals in the opening 6 rounds, having good games against Carlton (3 goals, 12 disposals) and West Coast (3 goals, 14 disposals). But then the rot started. Gone was his unselfishness and ability to put his body on the line. He began to do the selfish things again which has plagued him in the past to the detriment of his ability.
He would only kick 10 goals in the remaining 16 rounds of the AFL season. He only played 2 good games after Round 6. He picked up 21 disposals against the Hawks at York Park. Against the Bulldogs in round 13 he was excellent, picking up 23 disposals and being one of our very best that day. The other rounds he tended to go missing more often than not, and sometimes spent large amounts of time on the bench.
All the dissapointment accumulated and peaked at the end of the season when he was dropped for the Round 22 thriller against Brisbane, and was not picked for the first final against Collingwood.
He was given a chance against the Bombers in the Semi Final to see what he had, and he probably saved his skin with this game. He was one of the match winners in the second half, picking up most of his 12 disposals, 7 marks and 1 goal in the 3rd quarter. Another poor game against the Lions followed however.
After such an impressive year in 2001, where he finally showed how good a player he actually is...2002 can be labelled nothing other than a huge dissapointment for Che.
2003: Che will have to work hard to keep his spot in the side in 2003. Even tho 2 of his major rivals for his role in the side - Derek and Allan Murray - are no longer with us, we picked up Byron Pickett who could more than fill Ches role in the side. I can see Che spending a fair bit of time at the Magpies this upcoming season. I do hope that Che can rekindle his 2001 form and become the strong consistent performer he was in that season again.
