Darren Lehmann hasn't come up so Martin Love will make his debut and possibly replace Shane Warne at first slip.

Lehmann is out of the boxing day test but could be playing in the Sydney test. He will be out of hospital in the next couple of days.

Boof has had rotten luck with his timing. I was looking forward to him carrying his ODI form into the tests.

I wonder how Love will go batting at 6, as I can't recall him batting that late in the order for Queensland? Then again if you average over 200 against England, it doesn't really matter where you bat! Also, what will the selectors do for Sydney should Love score another double hundred against England this week?

As much as it would be dissapointing for Lehmann, in particular if Love scores big runs, it won't really matter as both Lehmann and Love will be playing in the Windies tour with S. Waugh out.

Hayden
Langer
Love
Ponting
Martyn
Lehmann
Gilchrist
Warne (or MacGill if Warney still injured)
Lee
Gilespie
McGrath

Watching Love, there is no doubt he is a class player. He will definitely be given a chance to start a test career very soon - if not now - just as who's expense is another question!

Lehmann, Waugh, Martyn! - tricky choice - my thought is that Love will come in when Steve goes and Michael Clarke will come in if Lehmann doesn't measure up - in time!!

i'd be picking love ahead of a fit lehmann for the 5th test. as to whether who should replace waugh if he's not touring the carribean, i think it would be a toss up between lehmann and clarke. my personal preference would be clarke, but i think he could do with a bit of weaning, plenty of tour matches, and possibly a debut next summer.

I'd say they'd take both. Clarke will be the back up batsman.

Is there another Clarke going around?

Surely you ain't talking about the over-rated, over-hyped, new NSW media darling Michael Clarke?

Is a dozen players more worthy of a baggy green than that 35.78 first class average hack

Yes, NSW's Michael Clarke who is averaging 50+ in first-class this season. I agree with you that he is given favourable media coverage by being the right state, but he is still easily the best under-25 batsman in the country. I wouldn't rush him into the test side yet but I think he will be blooded as the reserve batsman on the next tour.

Shane Watson (who isn't a genuine batsman) has a better record than Clarke (and is younger)

Hype over substance!

Hmmm... on averages sure. But I think Clarke's performances from his first couple of years as 18-19yo bring his stats down. Whereas Watson started with a bang but his recent form hasn't been as good. Clarke 5 100s, 7 50s v Watson 2 100s, 7 50s also.

This would make an interesting discussion. For mine I wouldnt risk touching Ponting at 3, ever since his been moved there his been on fire. Anyone know his average when batting at 3? I would say it would definatly be above 50-55 at least. The others are a raffle really, though I would have Lehamann (or Clarke) at 6 and Martyn at 4, because of the experience factor, and Love at 5.

Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Martyn
Love
Lehmann/Clarke

Hard one. Love has always been a top order player. But you wonder if number three is the best spot for a newcomer. And you're right about Ponting's performance at #3. (see below)

Mat I NO Runs HS1 HS2 HS3 Ave 100 50 0

overall 62 97 12 4195 197 157* 154 49.35 14 17 6

3rd position 23 37 4 1840 157* 154 150 55.75 7 6 0
5th position 5 5 0 185 96 51 18 37.00 0 2 0

Lehmann's out of the 5th Test, so Love gets another Test. It's unfortunate for Boof, but if Love scores some runs in Sydney Lehmann may have to wait till Steve Waugh retires to get his spot back.
