*couldn't resist a Tolkien-reference for the title*

Mick Moylan has returned to the Power in the capacity of football operations manager.

Yep, good to see Mick Moylan being welcomed back to the club with open arms. Lets hope he & WIlliams get on better than Moylan & Cahill did, i for one think they will.

Although it would be pretty funny if he didn't.

Mick has always kept close ties with Port since his unfortunate departure.........and I know Chocco/Snowden kept in close contact in regard to potential players in WA.........even whilst he was with Freo...........

My only hope is that the knives don't come out from JC's supporters as really Moylan was shafted last time...........and it should never have been fought out in the media as it was........

JC unfortunately broke the Port tradition of keeping things in house which was a let down for some of us long term Port supporters.........and although it would be great if he could re-embrace the club again this may delay things for a few more years............

Is JC still on MMM............??

Wasn't a good incident was it. I can't see Cahill supporters getting too upset with Moylan re-hiring especially if Choco can lead us to the premiership in 2003.

That would certainly shut them up but I hope most come to their senses..........like a lot of Ebert supporters have done since the end of the 1987 season............at least the players recognised Russell's part in the 1988 premiership by turning up for brekkie at his place on the morning following the 1988 success

I know my mother has never forgotten or forgiven for that and had to shut her mouth on many occasions at club functions in the years after that.........it was the one and only time her loyalty to the club was tested in 60 years of membership and support..........

Hopefully he won't put his foot in his mouth about this if he's back on the airwaves in 2003...............

DK, I have never had any close ties with people at the club(s), so I have no idea what this is about!

I know little about the reasons why Russell was ostracised?? earlier, and no idea of what might have happened in 1997. Would appreciate a history lesson from someone.

Oops.....got my dates out by a decade.....should be 1987/1988............

Ford Fairlane did a great summary of the events previously but I can't find the post - might have gone down with one of Bigfooty's crashes.........

but the events went along these lines.......

1981 - JC coached Port to the 3rd premiership in a row......but our side was beginning to age...........

1982 - JC coached us to the Prelim where we lost the game to Glenelg - this game was famous for Granger going a little beserk when he came off the bench he managed to put one G Cornes down a couple of times in the first 30 seconds ..............after this he had clashes with Maynard, Sewer, Carey and Steven Barrett (who ended up with a broken leg after a rather crude trip).......I'll leave these memories for another post as I'm sure it will be bought up again..............

It has been suggested that at this time Cahill knew he was off to coach Collingwood in 1983 and sent Granger on the ground to stir things up - something JC has denied but others have said otherwise............

1983 - 1987 - Russell took over the side after a number of players had retired or moved on to the AFL and had the task of rebuilding the side during the mid 80's......

1983 - 6th
1984 - 2nd
1985 - 7th
1986 - 4th
1987 - 4th

John Cahill returned to SA in 1985 coaching West Adelaide from 1985-1987

At the end of the 1987 season Ebert felt the knives coming out and did not have his contract renewed - at the time the club said in the media they didn't have anyone in mind for the job but lo and behold a couple of days later JC was back at Port as coach.........

Ebert went on to coach at Woodville vowing not to return to the club whilst certain people were still involved behind the scenes - he returned once Mark Williams was appointed coach in 1999 after numerous requests were declined previously.............

In 1988 JC inherited a side that Ebert had built up and the only thing that kept the knives out of his back was a premiership that turned into another 3 in a row............

The morning after the 1988 GF all the Port players turned up at Russell's house for a BBQ brekkie to thank and acknowledge Russell's part in building that side.............

In typical Port Adelaide fashion many of the events during this time never made it into the media as it was dealt with in-house..........something that JC forgot when the Moylan incident occurred..............

These 2 events along with the financial troubles the club had in the early 80's with Commercial Bank of Australia (now part of Westpac) were probably the clubs darkest hours. The interstate head office wanted to shut the clubs doors but the local SA management basically told head office if you want to shut the clubs doors send someone over to do it as it they weren't prepared to close the doors on SA's greatest football club. After some serious thought the head office decided it wouldn't be in their best interests to follow through with the threat.............

I'm sure a few others can add to the details but I think I've covered it all............the banking info comes from my time working for the bank through a manager that was working at the Port Adelaide branch at the time............

Much appreciated. I knew little of this, but suspected some of it through others' comments from time to time. Some gaps are filled in.
