View Full Version : ODI World Cup Qualifiers
The competition formerly known as the ICC Trophy (never to be confused with the ICC Champions Trophy) starts today in South Africa. Four spots up for grabs for the 14 team WC2011.
Despite the bloated format - two groups of six, followed by super eights, followed by finals/playoffs - the whole thing will be over with inside three weeks.
Group A: Canada, Ireland, Namibia, Oman, Scotland, Uganda.
Would expect the four teams with previous WC experience (Can/Ire/Nam/Scot) to progress to the next stage. But Oman's qualifying form thus far has been good, including a defeat of Namibia.
Group B: Afghanistan, Bermuda, Denmark, Kenya, Netherlands, UAE.
The weaker group for mine. This is the first time since the late 90s that Kenya have been forced to qualify. Again we have four teams with previous WC experience. But I doubt there's much that separates Denmark (who've never qualifed) from Bermuda or UAE (who have). Bermuda benefited from a weak group (and a different format) last time; and then duly stunk it up at the World Cup. Kenya and Netherlands ought to be the two sure things in this group. Afghanistan the new player on this stage. Expect them to struggle. (I was once told - seriously I think - that cricket was the only sport the Taliban approved of.)
Super Eights: The usual format. Every team carries through points from three of the first round matches and play the four teams from the opposite group.
Top four progress. Top six are awarded ODI status for the next four years.
Playoffs: Final, 3rd place playoff, 5th ppo, 7th ppo, 9th ppo, 11th ppo. (The latter two games preceded by consolation semis for the four teams that didn't make the S8s)
With the possible exception of the final, all very pointless this time with an even number of teams qualifying. Last time, the 5th ppo determined the final spot. Before that it was the 3rd ppo. And in earlier days the final.

They played pretty well in Darwin a couple of years ago. Had some decent bowlers with lively pace and field pretty well. It was the 3rd Tier tournament which they won.
They're in the tougher group, Ireland and Canada will be pretty hard to beat.

I was once told - seriously I think - that cricket was the only sport the Taliban approved of.
I don't believe that was quite accurate. They also allowed soccer, but no other sports. Or that was the report I saw on some show like Foreign Correspondent.
Group A
Ireland 285/4 (50) defeated Oman 169 (37.3)

This group's still wide open. The top three ought to make it, but any of the bottom three could place fourth.

Stick a fork in Bermuda, they're done. Afghanistan now probables to progress to the next round.
Before this tournament, Afghanistan have came first in Division 5, 4 and 3.
Yeah they've come from nowhere. Which is why I was expecting that they might be found out a bit at this stage.
Instead, Afghanistan have proved the surprise packet of the tournament so far.

He is brilliant. Would've been awesome to see him play us in his prime. Handy bowler as well (Took 17 wickets in Canada's first ever FC match). Reckon he can play at the next world cup?

Belated matchday three update:

I think the top four is settled now. It's just a matter of how many points each can take through to the next round.
Matchday 4 being played today starts at 9:30am local time (5:30pm AEST)

Matchday four results:
Group A
Canada 220 (48) lost to Ireland 223/4 (41)
Scotland 209/8 (50) defeated Uganda 164 (43.1)
Namibia 291/9 (50) defeated Oman 172 (43.4)
Ireland 8
Canada 6
Scotland 6
Namibia 2
Uganda 2
Oman 0
Ireland play Namibia which they'd want to win to ensure they go into the Super 8s on maximum points. Namibia's hopes may rest on Oman beating Uganda. Oman themselves may still be able sneak into fourth if they win big. Scotland v Canada is effectively an early super 8s encounter.
Group B
Bermuda 259/5 (50) lost to Kenya 260/3 (45)
Afghanistan 204/9 (50) lost to Netherlands 208/5 (46.2)
UAE 379/6 (50) defeated Denmark 267 (35) - Amjad Javed 164 off 117 (dismissed in the 36th over!)
Kenya 6
Netherlands 6
UAE 6
Afghanistan 4
Bermuda 2
Denmark 0
I'm not sure whether NRR or H2H is the tiebreaker. If the latter, then Bermuda cannot overtake Afghanistan. If the former, they'd still have to pull off an unlikely win against Netherlands. Regardless, it's important that Afghanistan win on Wednesday if they're to carry any points through to the next round; they play UAE. Kenya v Denmark is a glorified practice match.
(UPDATE: It's net run rate (http://www.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2009/OD_TOURNEYS/ICC-WCQ/groups.html), so Bermuda still mathematically alive.)
Final Round of Group games are on today starts at 9:30am local time (5:30pm AEST)
Group A
Scotland vs Canada at Williowmore Park,Benoni
Oman vs Uganda at De Villiers Oval,Pretoria
Ireland vs Namibia at WITS University,Johannesburg
Group B
Netherlands vs Bermuda at Potchefstroom
UAE vs Afghanistan at Vaal University
Kenya vs Denmark at Potchefstroom Univeristy
Winners today
* Canada, lead by the skipper's 87, won by 148 runs, Scotland bowled out for 104
* A 17-ball 41 from the number 11 got the Netherlands past 300, too much for Bermuda who were 63 short after 50 overs
* UAE comfortably chased down Afghanistan's 251 with 16 balls left
* Denmark restricted to 8/173, which Kenya chased down in the 34th over only one down, Kennedy Otieno unbeaten on 84
* Namibia recovered from 6/66 to make 213 but Ireland chased it down with 5 overs and 7 wickets up their sleeves
* Uganda somehow made 298 but Oman somehow chased them down - in 37 overs while losing nine wickets. Somehow = Farhan Khan making 95 off 49 balls.
So Namibia have Farhan Khan to thank for their survival with Uganda, Oman, Bermuda and Denmark out of contention for the World Cup spots.
So the starting table for the Super Eights is:
Ireland 6
Canada 4
Kenya 4
Netherlands 4
UAE 4

So, does this mean Bermuda loses its odi status as of now ?
The top 6 get odi status for the next 4 years meaning at least one of UAE, Afghanistan & Namibia will be granted odi status.
The top 4 progress to the 2011 world cup.
So, does this mean Bermuda loses its odi status as of now ?
Yes.
Huge win for Canada today. And conversely a big loss for Scotland. And I'm not just referring to the lopsided margin.
At 1-2, the Scots find themselves a game below that log jam on 2-1. They'll surely have to defeat one of Kenya or Netherlands in order to qualify.
Fook... Incredible day's cricket. Arguably four upsets from four matches...
Kenya 181 (43.5) lost to Canada 185/3 (34.3)

Big wins for UAE and Namibia, a big loss for Kenya. Doesn't really matter to Canada. Netherlands are going to take an NRR hit too with Ireland needing 10 in 7 overs and 87 off 58 looks too much for Scotland against the Afghans so with a round to go all 8 teams will have a chance of qualifying.
And Ireland get those 10 in 9 balls. Netherlands NRR now -0.02
Well the surprises continue. I can't believe Kenya got smashed like that. Particularly by Namibia who have been a disappointment this tournament. It vindicates the ICC in stripping Kenya of their automatic qualifying status.
Canada got thumped too; perhaps it won't matter. Bad loss for Scotland though; they're probably now (albeit not mathematically) eliminated.
Netherlands 222 (50) lost to Ireland 226/4 (44.3)
Canada 194 (49.5) lost to United Arab Emirates 200/5 (31.2)

For Afghanistan to be guaranteed of making the World Cup they need, assuming Kenya can chase down that total:

c) to bowl Namibia out for 158 or less

Great performance from Scotland thanks mainly to Hamilton's 127 at better than a run a ball. Craig Wright came in when he got out and hit 25 off 13 to get them to 299, bringing their NRR very close to what Afghanistan's was after their innings. Ireland also did well late to finish at 9/208

Afghanistan and Scotland win, Scotland have the higher NRR so are 5th on the table but they'll meet in Afghanistan's first ODI on Sunday to decide who gets what ranking, considering the security situation in the subcontinent and the political one Zimbabwe may face if it gets relocated, that could be very important. UAE and Namibia miss out on ODI status and playoff for 7th on Sunday. Kenya and Ireland still playing although it makes no difference to the table.

You don't necessarily get to play the Test nations, but if the ACF do arrange any games with another ODI nation they're official ODIs. Next Asia Cup they'll probably be involved playing India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and I guess UAE. The UAE games won't be official ODIs but the Afghanistan games will be.

So what happens when you get ODI status? Do you get to play teams like India, Australia and stuff? Does Afghanistan achieve ODI status now?
i highly doubt it.
they'll play predominantly against teams 9-16 in tri-series etc
(afghanistan may play the big boys in the asia cup and kenya may play the odd series against south africa with touring teams to england plus england playing a one off against scotland & ireland).
if you consider the big 8 as australia, west indies, england, new zealand, south africa, sri lanka, india & pakistan this is how the others stack up.
*bermuda played 3 of their 35 odi's against the big 8 (all in 07 wc)
*canada have played 11 of their 43 agaisnt the big 8 (all in wc's)
*ireland have played 12 of their 35 against the big 8 (most in wc's)
*scotland have played 11 of their 35 against the big 8 (most in wc's)
*netherlands have played 15 of their 41 agaisnt the big 8 (all in wc's and champs trophy)

I hope the Netherlands don't lose Kerveeze to County Cricket like ten Doeschate...would be a shame, very talented player.

He was on the books at Worcs, might still be actually. Playing county cricket is probably better preparation for the big boys, Netherlands have enough to get through tournaments without RtD so it's not drastically affecting them.
