Thought it would have been round 1 this week:confused:
Thus assumed our boys would be without a game due to having a bye.

Nah, the VFL season starts later this year, can't remember why. There was an article yesterday about how Nick Stevens can play in the VFL this weekend as it's only practice matches and they don't apply to his suspension, so he can get some match fitness coming into his season proper.

The fifth and final part was the complete and utter domination by Port Melbourne in the 3rd and 4th Quarters.

End 3rd Q: Hawks 3 goals 7 behinds to 6 goals 6 points.

As fate would have it I missed Rusty Hawk yesterday, which he will no doubt be highly grateful for, and got to the main game at North Port Oval about half way through the second quarter.

Not long after I arrived Jordan Lisle kicked a goal to make the score Box Hill 5.3 to Port 5.1, from then until half time Port kicked six unanswered goals. How pleasant!!

After half time the scoring was relatively even and the final score was something like Port 17.8 to Box Hill 11?.12.

To be honest quite a few of the players present will be Box Hill reserves players for most of the season. With the number of injuries at Hawthorn, especially to taller players it was a little like a team of undersized youngsters battling men but I will say that most of them had a dip.

Generally our tackling was good, our pace was reasonable but we got outmarked and our disposal was, at times, abysmal.

Hawthorn listed players

None set the world on fire while I was there but:

Kiel – was probably the best. Looked harder bodied than many of the others. Played mainly on the wing from what I saw. Went in after it and generally looked among the more poised.

Lisle – still quite a way to go but shows signs. At first he played key forward kicked one goal that I saw but looked a bit lost. Went to FB/CHB and looked much better. Not over quick but punches the ball hard and well. Periodic lapses with disposal – missed a couple of targets by foot and gave a ridiculous handpass but definitely something there.

Milne – got some touches, mainly by hand which were OK but didn’t do much. Has to get bigger, more aggressive and faster to make it.

Sierakowski – got to the ball a bit but looked a little timid at times. His kicking is good but didn’t get it enough and got run over a few times. Will probably be started in the reserves to learn the caper.

Breust – didn’t seem to be on that much earlier but played most, if not all the last quarter as a small forward. He had a purple patch at the start of the quarter, kicked 1.2 and got a couple of other touches. Quick and a real swooper type, but very thin looked promising. Not sure how he fits in the side with Steve Kenna there as well but may get a run at times

As for the rest. I thought Cam Pederson was easily best for Box Hill. He played in the ruck again, was dwarfed again but jumped over the top of much bigger blokes again. Took marks, tackled etc etc. This guy is a rolled gold warrior!!

Yze got a bit of the ball but sprayed some shots at goal and was going half paced. Markovic had a shocker, outmarked, gave away a 50 for a goal, kicked out badly, got pinged for a ridiculous rushed behind blah blah blah.

Cross played pretty well but needs to tighten up his disposal. Smithwick is fast also got lots of the ball but lets himself down with his kicking at times.

Number 54 who wasn’t on the list also did well at times. Wish I could tell you who he was.

Anyway, don’t despair, better times are coming.

Questions

Was the crowd so bg that Rusty and ND could not spot each other?

Why was ND writing this report at 4.20am this morning (allowing for daylightsaving)?

Good questions!!

I was so agitated about the game in Sydney that I had to get up and DO SOMETHING!!

The crowd was huge...about 150 including the wife and daughter both of whom I dragged along against their will.;) But I didn't see Rusty because he'd already gone by the time I got there...pressure of work I believe.

Luke Lowden not play either?

No. Lowden has an injury. They could have used him though. Box Hill will be behind the eight ball unless Walsh or one of the other Hawthorn ruckmen come up.
