if what i heard just a moment ago on the radio was correct, Steve Waugh has apparantly been guaranteed the selectors support beyond the fifth ashes test in sydney, virtually guaranteeing him a tour of the West Indies.

your thoughts??

my thoughts are (and regretfully) that this turnaround is due to steve waugh saying to the selectors he'll hang up the baggy green after the 5th test, and this 'support' from trevor hohns is a facade which allows him to do it with a fair amount of dignity.

Hohns backs Waugh

Under-pressure skipper STEVE WAUGH has the support of Australian cricket selectors beyond the Sydney Test.

National selection chairman TREVOR HOHNS has effectively given WAUGH the green light to continue his career past the fifth Ashes Test starting in Sydney on January 2.

HOHNS says WAUGH has the selectors' support through and past the Sydney Test.

The endorsement is an apparent u-turn by the selectors after HOHNS was reported earlier this month as saying WAUGH'S position in the Test side would not be guaranteed after the current Ashes series.

actually ive got another reason for this u-turn.

Selectors were always fearful of simultaneous retirements, namely Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath.

with McGrath and Warne out, and if Steve Waugh was to be dropped, that is 350 odd tests in experience gone in one hit.

to me im still trying to work out the reasons behind this backflip by selectors, these are just 2 possible reasons ive come up with scratching my head.

The idea that they are trying to insulate the team against the simultaneous absences of Waugh, McGrath and Warne doesn't sound right, considering both McGrath and Warne are expected to be fit for the WI tour...

This isn't healthy. Martin Love and Darren Lehmann are better for the team than Waugh continuing indefinately. I had hoped that the Waughs would go out with grace. Neither have really.

Maybe because he scored 53 and 77 in consecutive tests?

well thats why i'd pick him in the side. he's a better batsman than lehmann, but the selectors have disregarded these type of scores before when dropping the waugh brothers, i dont see why theyve decided to change their tune now.

It sounds to me like Steve Waugh is guaranteed of going to the West Indies. Which if I recall correctly is just the opposite of what he asked for. He made a big song and dance about being selected on merit, and not being guaranteed anything.

Or they believe his recent form is enough for selection. I can see how the case can be made, even if I don't agree with it.
