G’day Lion Bears, here to do my take on your 2003 squad
One comment first, the Lions go into 2003 3 players short of a full list, sure they have a full complement of Rookies, but, salary cap considerations aside, are clubs with short lists fulfilling
their greater obligations to the junior footballing community?
Maybe Mick Malthouse has a point re this issue
Anyway, that’s probably a topic for a thread by itself, lets have a look at your players
Jason Akermanis - Does so many things well, is a big head though
Marcus Ashcroft - Still valuable, but may find younger guys taking his jobs
Simon Black - Smooth mover of midfield, still improving
Daniel Bradshaw - Surprised he is still a Lion, has talent, but not coach’s confidence
Jared Brennan - New kid, yet to see him play
Jonathan Brown - 2nd best CHF, has fantastic aggression
Blake Caracella - Handy but lazy goalscorer, better players from Dons were available
Jamie Charman - See him taking No. 1 ruck role, good skills, great attack
Robert Copeland - Limited hard run with guy, better options available
Anthony Corrie - New kid, yet to see him play
Jason Gram - “Old” new kid, hardly seen anything to judge on yet
Richard Hadley - Fleeting appearance only so far, need to see more to judge
Shaun Hart - Tough nut who can still find the ball, slowing up a bit
Chris Johnson - Keeps on improving, fine running defender
Clark Keating - Probably 3rd stringer now, despite fine finals series
Nigel Lappin - Final “Fab4” member, deserves his place
Justin Leppitsch - Risk taking defender, means he’ll be burnt on occasion
Alastair Lynch - Muscle man soon to be 35, has to slow down, maybe this year
Beau McDonald - I think he’s a weak squib, but no-one else does, maybe I’m wrong?
Ashley McGrath - Hasn’t had a lot of ground time yet, looks competent so far
Dylan McLaren - Bit short for an AFL ruckman, has lots to learn for key possies
Craig McRae - Almost invisible player who gets important goals
Daniel Merrett - New kid, yet to see him play
Mal Michael - A bit better than just a stopper, provides some run
Shane Morrison - Doubt he can break into strong Lions team, may go south
Tim Notting - Still only a spare part player, like I said last year
Martin Pike - Still confounds the critics & does his work well, maybe slowing up
Luke Power - Next generation midfielder/forward, no weaknesses
Brad Scott - Lions love him, opposition hates him, ‘nuff said
Chris Scott - Lions love him, opposition hates him, ‘nuff said, (mmm deja vu?)
Troy Selwood - New kid, yet to see him play
Aaron Shattock - Versatile with some talent, & lots of aggro, may go south for game time
Michael Voss - Best in the game at the moment
Darryl White - Freakish player, when on song great to watch
Jarred Wright - Old new kid, only a fraction of playing time, not enough to judge
No reason to believe the Lions will drop off from their form of the last 2 seasons, still the team to beat. Predictions to come after I have done all the clubs.
