Thought Mitch Robinson should have got it, but very pleased our boy did.
He did deserve it. Maybe it's a delayed April Fool's Joke.

I'd like to think that neither Longy or myself would troll our own supporter board.
We've been around here a while you know. :D

How much importance is placed on the Rising Star Award and the other individual awards ?
Here in the UK , there are a number of awards handed out for our football (soccer) ; Player of the Year , Players' Player of the Year , Young Player of the Year , Supporters' Player of the Year etc etc ; and to be honest , 5 minutes after the award no one can remember who won them . Nobody places any real importance on them .
Is the culture in Australia different ? I know the Brownlow appears to be held in high esteem , are the other individual awards ?

For a club like Essendon, which, let's face it isn't going to win the flag this year, there's a bit of importance attached.
Geelong wouldn't have batted an eyelid when Selwood won it in their premiership year.
To be honest though, it's a nice distraction.
The Brownlow on the other hand has much more prestige than the PFA Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or etc.

The Coleman Medal (highest goalkicker, named after EFC legend) is usually a big one, but depends on the year (last year, for example, it was more interesting cos Buddy and Fevola were in an almost year long shootout).
The Brownlow is THE medal, but I think its prestige is on the way down, maybe 'cause Ablett's missed out, and Shane Woewodin won one. Most footy fans can tell you if a certain player has won the Brownlow or not, but everyone's got an opinion on who deserves one.
People also generally remember you winning a Norm Smith Medal (best on in the GF).
The Rising Star is probably more of a treat for the kids than anything. Good for encouragement. Treat for fans too, who are pretty much like the kids at the Kids' Table at Christmas lunch, anyway.

I find it interesting that the Brownlow carries so much prestige . I understand the history , but given that it's the Umpires' votes , and most of them don't seem to know what day it is , then I don't see how it's a fair reflection of who the best player was .
If I was a player , i'd much rather win the Leigh Matthews , and be acknowledged by my peers .

Well deserved - looks like a real natural footballer.

Very astute observation for a foreign fan, but perhaps your distance from the game (figuratively, as you are a new fan) is also why you don't ascribe to it the traditional prestige that most do when they grow up watching aussie rules in Australia as children. For the record I agree, while I will still enjoy any Essendon player winning it, I put more value on the Leigh Matthews Trophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leigh_Matthews_Trophy), while it is not 100% perfect I believe it is a better system and has a good record.
Of course being based on player votes one could argue that players may miss things that umpires see, but putting the winners of each next to each other I'd take the Matthews Trophy 99 times out of 100 (not that the MVP has been running that long). So evidence shows us that the players don't miss much and umpires sometimes give too much credit to some players.
That's just my opinion, neither is perfect and I loved it when Hird won a Charlie, but I can't deny the Leigh Matthews Trophy to me seems more accurate. Not to mention it isn't a Midfielders award like the Brownlow is.
It occurs to me now that while posting in this thread I should say well done Zaharakis. Daytripper is pretty reliable so I have no reason to doubt this. It is nice for one of our AFL debutantes to get it that week. Good for his confidence no doubt. :thumbsu:

Absolutely . I wasn't trying to diminish young Zaharakis' achievement . Well done to the lad , and I hope he or Hurley win the end of season award .
