It's one of the best innings ever. Due to the emotion behind it all.
Such tension..
Props to Gilchrist for playing a suburb role in this drama.
greatest thing i've ever seen.

hehehe likewise!! :D :D
For me to get excited about cricket, it must have been pretty special :)
Makes it an interesting question, though. On one hand, Waugh is clearly going to make it very hard for the selectors, on the other, you'd think that if he was going to retire any time soon, it wouldn't hurt to go out in this sort of fashion- i mean, if aust win this test, you could hardly ask for a more storybook way of ending your career- So yes, it looks like he deserves his spot in the side, but maybe if he's smart he'd look at retiring?
I think he should retire after the windies tour.
This should be his last test in Australia. Why not?

He is selfish, so he won't retire. As are all players on big $.
FWIW, I would take Border's 50s surrounded by some of the worst cricketers to play for our country, against one of the best bowling attacks to play the game, over Waugh's 100 today. Nice, but perspective.

Thats a pathetic post.
That was unreal. The best test knock Ive ever seen. Bloody brilliant the guys a champion, not only was it special because of personal reasons, but because the side was in strife.

Earlier this morning I said that 1 moment stood above the rest of all the cricket I'd seen, which was Bevan hitting a four off the last ball to beat the Windies.
Now, there are two fours off the last ball stuck in my memory for ever.
He's only in the side cause he's from NSW;););)
Nah, bloody legend he is, 3 milestones in the one match.
This is one innings he will be remembered for when he does retire.

'Twas great to see. Good on ya Stevie. I can say my whole family were cheering you on and it looks like most of the cricket board were too!
Well played by Adam Gilchrist aswell, nice of him to get a single and put Waugh back on strike for the last ball!
Great stuff.
To be honest I thought he was done. I didnt wanna see him bow out, but until the melbourne test, he didn't even look like steve waugh batting.
Good to see him 'back' - hopefully this will give him a chance to choose the moment he bows out and to do so with the appropriate style and grace, instead of dragged away kicking and screaming, which is what seemed to be looming

He said it was as good a knock as his 1st century.
And with Martin Love making a duck, it would seem he has put pressure on the selectors to keep him in the team for a bit longer!

Yep they extended it to see if Waugh was going to get his century.
Mighty nice of them :D

Just goes to show doesnt it. They CAN do it when they want to. Just wonder why they dont do it ALL the time, particularly in non-ratings season.

Sensational stuff. Real backs-to-the-wall stuff early on, with England on top for the first time in the series, but that partnership with Gilchrist puts us back in better shape. Not to mention the emotion of it - the atmosphere in the crowd and the support for Steve Waugh was tangible. Even while walking back to Central Station after the game everyone was still singing "Steve Waugh, Steve Waugh".
For a while it didn't look like he was going to get to 100 tonight, but anyone who left early will be feeling like a goose now.:p
The West Indies has always been a happy hunting ground for Steve Waugh. And, after that knock, it'll be his decision whether he wants to go back there. And I think he'll want to play on.

I reckon Johnnie Howard must have called up Channel Nine and demanded that they show it till stumps :D
We all missed the Gough hattrick last time, and I'm glad we didn't miss out on this (given that the gough hat-trick, though sensational, was by a pom :D)
and was the 2nd last ball great or what?! Must be the biggest roar EVER for a single :D

Will anyone ring up ch9 and complain because they dumped tonights episode of The King Of Queen's ? :p

waugh,s innings today turned back the clock!no suprise really if we look back at his career and the make up of him.
once again when the team was in trouble steve proved his worth.
one of the best innings i have ever whitnessed.
steve waugh a true champion.
cheers!
Steve Waugh ... you rock!
That type of backs-to-the-wall innings is why I rate him above Tendulkar.
Navy Master
3 Jan 2003, 21:49
Pfft.. Tendulkar, i admit i have canged my opinion on Steve Waugh, surely he must hold his spot for the Windies...
I cannot believe the selfishness of Steve Waugh. Clearly he put himself above the team, instructing Hayden, Langer and Ponting to get out cheaply so he could come in and save the team in a "crisis".
Then removing the Love threat with a timely call of "chewie on your bat" causing him to lose concentration and edge it to the slips.
And to top it all off, he tells Gilly to slow down to make sure he reached 100 first!
Tomorrow he'll probably selfishly go on to his highest ever Test score and a big first innings lead and a 5-0 clean sweep.
Selfish bastard!

i feel sorry for you pathetic steve waugh knockers willing to drill in nails at every opportunity. it is you who follow the game and will never get wrapped up in the emotion of what was the finest days cricket i have ever seen.
glorious stuff steve!!! first the entry onto the ground, not a single bum on a seat, then the 50, then the 10,000 test runs which i was desperately hoping would come before his career was over.
and as if in an effort to thank the crowd for their magnificent support of the great man himself, a fairytale ending like that. needing 5 off the last over, teasing us by blocking the first 3, and Gilchrist you legend for finding a single out there, then on the LAST BALL!!! what a stunning stoke, not a dry eye at the SCG.
this must be match fixing, you cannot script it any better.

yep, i was there BS. only got there for the last session though.
as for the atmosphere, absolutely electric. what made it so much better was the fact that EVERYONE at the ground was cheering steve waugh on, something you certainly wouldnt get at say the adelaide oval. the crowd rose with every run he hit, and he repaid them for their support. the steve waugh chants were deafening.

Knuckles, give your big uncle Wayde a hug, I know you're upset about the Australian Test team, climbing thier way back into this game, after the Poms had them in a lot of trouble (You're one of those pricks that hate sucessful teams, regardless of what they do), so do yourself a favour, take a panadol, have a good lie down, and come back into this forum, when you've got something remotely interesting or intelligent to say.
FWIW, Although this innings that's just ended on 102 by Steve Waugh is one of the best i've seen him play, because he had the vultures surrounding him, ready to swoop (c***s like you, Knuckles, the selectors, the media, and those who wanted to sink the boot in).
Although Allan Border played many gutsy innings captaining woeful Australian sides, against terrific attacks, Steve Waugh has shown yet again that he is the most courageous batsman currently playing the game.

Great for Steve to get a ton, break the 10,000 barrier and possibly safe his test cricket career. Steve Waugh ALWAYS stands up for the big test matches. You can always count on him when the going gets tough and the rest of the team have failed.
Well done to Channel Nine for going live dispite their news and TV show committments.

I think Uncle Wayde might be hugging something already. Just because you don't agree with someone elses perspective it doesn't make it any less interesting or intelligent. Or would you prefer the internet was full of like minded people having a collective w@nk.
Well done to Waugh, a good innings, but there have been many better IMO.

??? Puzzlling comment.
Do a bit of research you'll find most of Tubby's centuries came in the 1st and 2nd Tests of series, and many of Waugh's have come in the 3rd and 4th when the series was probably already won or lost.

pfft, what a load of crap, you do the research
steve waugh has only scored 6 centuries in his career including yesterdays that have been in dead rubber matches.
and by the way, tubby had a reputation for losing 'nothing' matches, unlike steve waugh

Dead Rubber obviously, but the Australian test team were moaning on that they wanted to win 5-0 (so It could mean a bit for those historians).
And big test match I should have referred to Steve Waugh's career - if he got 2 ducks in this test he'd not get a ticket to the West Indies in April (unless he booked the Merv and Funky Miller tour).
