View Full Version : The Ultimate Fighter 9 - Team USA v Team UK
Well, I thought the first episode was most interesting. It featured the preliminary fights to determine who would be on the UK team. It looks like there's certainly plenty of talent amongst the young UK fighters.

Looked to be a decent lot, especially the welterweights. Funny to see Franklin there assessing the fighters, knowing it was pointless.
Filming was before UFC93 so they were both there.

Yeh I know. Just sayin'.
Just stumbled across this show, haven't seen any of the first 8 seasons and so far so good.
UK team looks stronger and hungrier ATM, although the welterweight yanks look superior.
I thought the young redheaded fellow in the US team, Richie Whatshisname looks a good fighter even if he does look like that fellow out of Harry Potter. :D
But yeah, it wasn't a good start for the Yanks with one guy fainting and another failing to make weight. So far, I think it's fair to say the Brits look the better team.

I like how half the show will be subtitled even though they're speaking English
Thank christ that drunken egg throwing tosser got beaten out of the house.
Guy that knocked himself out was unlucky, but also extremely lucky he didn't get his arm ripped off whilst out.
The constant beeping during the episodes is pissing me off... surely there must be an uncensored version somewhere. Seems weird to have a show so violent and be concerned with swearing.

Stupid Americans. One guy could shank another, and that's fair game, but if he called him a bitch, the precious public would have to be protected from that. Just more proof that TV is a joke, would rather watch these shows uncensored and streaming over the net.
With regards to the UK team, most look pretty good but there's a couple of them just making up the numbers and are wasting their time.

Rob Browning. Junie's little brother, and every bit as obnoxious as his brethren. I think the whole world was in Jason Dent's corner in that fight. :D

Kiel someone. He wasn't very gracious in defeat but then neither was Frank Lester very gracious in victory.

Yeah, it does become a bit monotonous. It's still shaping up as a good series, though.
Great fight last episode :)

im a ninja. no shit.
Really good fight, although how stupid and arrogant was the yank? Doesn't believe in tactical preparation and thought he could just work him out during the fight.
Loved the ending... "Look low and kick high, oldest trick in the book".
As someone who has never seen a season of this how is the winner decided? Initially I assumed that each week would be a fight to avoid elimination, but seemed Mark was still in the house despite being knocked out into a concussed vomit inducing stupor.
American ranga and Damarques looked the pick of their bunch, hopefully one of them fights next episode. Most likely Damarques due to the childish pranks he's been pulling.
The pom with the bleached blonde mohawk also looked the goods, very strong wrestler which would suit him against the yanks as they seem obsessed with toe to toe punching & kicking.

Nick of the British team did indeed score an impressive KO victory in a good fight.
I thought it was fascinating when they showed footage of Bisping analysing Miller's fighting style and working out the best strategy for Nick to take into the fight. :thumbsu:

Sometimes some of the losers get a chance to fight again say, if someone gets injured and they need a replacement. Despite all the team rivalry in these series, TUF is ultimately an individual sport and at some point in the latter stages the Brits may have to fight other Brits or Americans fight other Americans.
When they come down to the last 2, the series will be over in terms of living in the house. The actual TUF winner will be crowned at a seperate UFC fight night that will presumably also feature Bisping v Henderson. And aside from the bragging rights, the winner gets a six figure UFC contract (as they keep telling us). :)

I look forward to seeing the back of Damarques, whoever he fights.

They used to get knocked out of the house and had to go home, but in the more recent series, even if you are knocked out, you get to stay and continue to train with your team and possibly come back (depending on how you do in your fight) if someone's injured...

Of course there's been the occasional person thrown out of the house too, for unacceptable behaviour.

Well, unacceptable behaviour that doesnt increase ratings. If it will increase ratings you get to stay!

So what happened to Bisping in episode 5????
So what happened to Bisping in episode 5????
Guess we'll have to wait til next week to find that out.:)
I was disappointed Damarcus won his fight. He needs a kick up the backside.

Damarcis is a bit of a douche', however he has great submission skills and seems quite talents.
Bisping seems very team orientated, so i am pretty sure he'll have a good excuse for missing that fight. It does seem stange that no-one had any idea where he was though, which to me indicates something quite serious.
Sleeping is not a good excuse, pathetic excuse actually.
Bisping not being there I think effected the result of the fight. Damarques was struggling before the error that led to the submission. Bisping yelling instructions from ringside about avoiding the triangle would have definitely helped.
Absolutely cracking fight in the last episode... that yank got the absolute shit belted out of him (plus four teeth). James looks the goods and would love to see him smack the piss out of Damarques in the same manner.
First fight Cameron got a bit lucky I thought, but once the fight went to the floor he was always going to win. Looks like he has great wrestling skills, just needs to make sure he doesn't get knocked out before getting a chance to use them.
Looking forward to seeing Richie the ranga fight as he looked great in his qualification fight, hopefully it will be next week. Would be a cracking fight between him and the English guy with the bleached mohawk.

Totally agree!
Lame Michael...lame!

Well, Bisping himself acknowledged it was poor. Still, sometimes these things happen and he shouldn't be crucified for it.

You can't be serious. Not having Bisping simply meant Bisping's own UK coaches were in the corner yelling advice. And these blokes are professional coaches!

You're right, it was one hell of a fight. Luckily, Lester's teeth weren't real. He'd already lost those somewhere along the line, apparently. :)

I think you mean Dave Faulkner. I'm hoping Richie won't fight Faulkner. I like the both of them.

James looked good I thought. He's supposed to be a BJJ guy, but in a mostly standup fight he was on top. Lester is nothing special, but James was picking his shots quite well and landing some good knees. I think he's a bit older than most of the others, so he could do alright.
Doubt I could have been more wrong about Richie the Ranga. Not training for a week with his skin infection may have affecting him some, but his opponent destroyed him. He is raw and loose and all it takes is someone with good technique and discipline to dissect him like a high school lab frog.
I think Dave Faulkner is ****ed for this season. Seen too many people evacuated and hospitalised on Survivor with similar massively swollen leg infections to realistically expect him to fight any time soon. Not a good sign when you are already on antibiotics and the infected shin lump just keeps getting bigger.
Pity as he now looks to be the best in the house, doesn't seem to have any weaknesses... except maybe swinging a sledge hammer.
The tennis challenge was funny to watch. I honestly didn't think it was as possible to be as uncoordinated with a tennis racket as Bisping and not be suffering some sort of mental retardation or physical disability. I think even an alien life form without a skeletal system and unfamiliar with our planet's gravity pull would have done a much better job.
Great post, likka. :thumbsu:
I have no idea what's going on inside the head of that other American fighter, but I bet Dana will be pissed if he's unwilling to fight. Guess we'll have to wait til next week to see what happens.

I find it hard to understand how someone who's coordinated enough to fight for living can be so hopeless with a racket. I'm rubbish at tennis, but at least I look normal when doing so.
Faulkner being out would suck, he could be the only one to stop Demarques.
Felt sorry for the English guy who blew up badly in his fight this week, especially as he totally dominated the first round and was the vastly superior fighter. Missing first 10 days of cardio training with a chest infection was a nail in his coffin unfortunately.
Dave Faulkner should become a professional wrestler if MMA doesn't work out... that was an awesome superplex off the diving board into the pool! Very weird how his gag reflex kicks in when he has a mouthguard in, or anything in his mouth when he is fatigued. He reckons he gets in from his mother... gotta feel sorry for his father ;)
The right call was made to pull the whining yank from the competition, he didn't want to be there nor did he really want to fight. His infection would have hurt, but not anymore than a knee to the face.
Rocky said it best... "I'm a fider, I godda fide", and "I godda do wha I godda do".
Looks like Dave's leg has recovered and he will finally fight next episode. It was interesting to hear Bisping say that he's never seen Dave actually fight to his potential. He has phenomenal skills, strength and fitness but all that can mean little without a keen fighting instinct. Hope he doesn't disappoint like Richie the Ranga did.
Don't really care who Dave fights TBH, as long as he stays alive and is still eligible to smack the piss out of Demarques next round.

Nah, I reckon James from the English team could take Demarques. James was super impressive in his fight, and Demarques was dominated before the pom fell into a submission.

Yeah, Jeff was going well in the first round. Seems to have some pretty awesome judo throws, but fitness and conditioning are such crucial factors in MMA. I hope he gets another opportunity some time in the future.

Suplex, I think it's called. And you're right, it was awesome! Looked pretty spectaculor going off a diving board, that's for sure.

;) It's obviously a phobia-type thing. In next week's episode he gets professional help for it. May be Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) or something. Good on Dave for going to that length. I'm just about hoping Faulkner goes all the way.

Hard to say. Dana wants everyone as keen as mustard to fight, but you'd have to wonder about the medical advice.

I'm with you there. Although we didn't see much of Damarques this episode, he's still a pain in the neck! Apparently he has a bit of a clash with Bisping next week.
Suplex, I think it's called. And you're right, it was awesome! Looked pretty spectaculor going off a diving board, that's for sure.
They were simulating a superplex, which is a suplex executed off the top rope (first made famous by Dynamite Kid way back in the 80s).
Hard to say. Dana wants everyone as keen as mustard to fight, but you'd have to wonder about the medical advice.
The only medical advice Dana would have been interested in is whether it was contagious and whether there was a chance of permanent injury. Apparently negative on both fronts.
You have to wonder about his attitude though. It was obvious he didn't want to fight, which is bizarre given the opportunity presented and medical clearance.
Bisping's petulance and childish dummy spits is starting to shit me no end. Henderson summed him up perfectly by comparing his whingeing and tantrums to the behaviour of his little kids at home.
I'm no fan of Demarques, but after Bisping accused him of racism and squirted him in the face like a five year old I wanted to see Demarques drop him... either that or Henderson physically teach him a lesson in maturity and humility.

D'oh!
Dave seems like a nice guy, but he fights like a heartless pussy. Has all the skills in the world which is why that was easily the most disappointing fight of the season. From the moment he stepped in the right he was fighting scared. He was far more concerned with not getting hurt than in winning the fight, which is probably why he seemed so happy after the fight. Refusing to come out in the third round was an act of cowardice and he should never fight again.
Kudos to Frank Lester, he may be as thick as two short shits and an extremely limited fighter, but what he did was unbelievably gutsy. Stepping into the ring with a tender busted up face and getting it even more busted up in the first round makes what he did in the second round all the more courageous. Also makes what Dave did seem all the more cowardly.
Got to wonder if Lester can recover in time for the semi final bouts, although if he does get medical clearance there is a very high probability his face will get badly busted up again. Almost think best result for him would be a quick submission.
Dave Faulkner should become a professional wrestler if MMA doesn't work out...
He mentioned this himself at the end of the episode too. Doubt he even has the fortitude to work in WWE, and after that pathetic performance I highly doubt Vinnie Mac would give him the time of day.

I still like Bisping a lot more than Damarques. But yes, it was stupid of Bisping - however, give him a little credit for quickly realising the error of his ways and apologising. He knew he was in the wrong and he repented quickly. That did show some maturity at least, and it's probably more than Damarques would do had he been in the wrong about something.

I refuse to call any MMA fighter "a heartless pussy". It takes enormous courage to get in the ring/octogon at all. Dave Faulkner had won a few fights. You don't get to be on TUF if you don't have some courage at some point.
I don't know exactly what happened with Faulkner. Maybe it was stagefright. Maybe he was still worried about his gag reflex, or maybe he just simply wasn't as good as he appeared in training. He was certainly gassed by the second round. But whatever, it was a very disappointing effort by him.

Yep. Agree with the above. Lester has enormous courage. He just doesn't have the talent to match it.

It takes courage to get into the ring, but the real courage shows through during the fight when you start taking a few.
He was in the ring with an injured and very limited fighter, and all it took was a bit of fatigue and couple of good shots and he gave up. Not only did he give up but he was happy he gave up, there was not an ounce of remorse or regret.
He showed no heart and fought like a pussy. Watch the fight again if you don't believe me.

Watch the fight again. It is no mystery. He was fighting scared. His main concern was not winning the fight, but to avoid getting hurt. He was gassed at the end of the second round, but he used that as an excuse to quit because he copped a couple of good shots.

Massive respect for Lester from me after that. As weak as Faulkner was, Lester was just as bad ass. You'd think he'll lose the semi quite easily, but it'd be stupid to count him out now.
I was hoping for more from the Bisping/Demarques incident but Bisping was clearly in the wrong so seeing Demarques beaten wouldn't have been right.

In MMA, you fight until you can't stand IMO. A dry throat or being gassed doesn't cut it. You either get knocked out, TKO'ed or you tap out. I agree that if you have fought MMA before, you have courage, but Faulkner jibbed it last night. He trains to go until he drops.
Fight of the series so far between Nick and Demarques. Very hard fought win to Demarques, but geez he was within a whisker of being knocked out at the end of the first round. Nick landed some cracking blows, and the toe to toe action that followed was awesome.
Nick was outclassed in the end, but showed enormous courage to take a beating on the ground in the second round and then came out fighting in the third. Dave Faulkner take note.
Lester must be shitting bricks at having to take on James again, the bloke who initially belted him into the middle of next week. I'd like to think he learned something from their first fight, but being the dipshit he is that probably won't happen.
I reckon James has what it takes to beat Demarques in the finale, but whatever happens I think it will be a cracking fight... "bring it on, c'mon!".

Very enjoyable fight that, too bad Nick couldn't pull off the win. If he had a bit more power he could've ended Demarques during that onslaught. Hopefully nothing crazy happens during the James/Frank fight and we get a James/Demarques final, which should be interesting. In the LWs, I'm expecting an all-UK final, but I can see Dent getting the win over Ross.

I absolutely disagree that Nick was "outclassed". The decisive factor in the fight was the respective cardios of the fighters. Nick gassed. That's what cost him. When it came to actual skills and technique (not to mention courage), I thought Nick was at least the equal of Damarques.
But yeah, it was an awesome fight, that's for sure. Amazing how Nick just kept finding something.

I agree that Damarques is very beatable.

He was tired no doubt, but I don't think Nick was gassed. I think his condition in the third round had as much to do with Damarques complete domination of him in the second round as to his physical condition. He expended a lot of energy defending on his back, and also copped a few huge blows that left him wobbly on his feet.
Apart from the final 30 seconds or so of the first round Damarques dominated the entire fight. Damarques' jab was landing consistently, Nick had no answer to the take downs and ground work, and he nailed Nick with a knee right between the eyes that should have left an skull indentation (ie Jason Dunstall style).
Agree that Damarques is very beatable, but Nick did not have the ground work to come close to beating Damarques in that fight. Toe to toe they were reasonably even, but Nick was too easy to take down and dominate.
I'm no fan of Damarques, but he also showed huge courage coming out in the second after the shots he took at the end of the first. I watched that 30 second stint a few times and was amazed he didn't go down considering the number of heavy shots Nick landed.
Got to question the conditioning preparation work being supervised by Bisping so far this season. Two fighters completely gassed, and Nick didn't seem to be as fit as Damarques. Bisping has had the better fighters this season, but I think I'd rather Henderson as my coach.
TUF finale is live on Sunday at 11am EST on FuelTV.
Full card below includes the result of the fight from yesterday's episode so skip this post if you haven't watched it yet.
Main card
Lightweight bout: Diego Sanchez vs Clay Guida - should be a high-energy fight but Sanchez is a level above Guida, can't see Guida being able to keep him at bay like Fitch and Kos did. Sanchez by decision
Welterweight bout: DaMarques Johnson vs James Wilks - Wilks by TKO, I hope, DaMarques is a nob
Welterweight bout: Chris Lytle vs Kevin Burns - Lytle by TKO
Lightweight bout: Ross Pearson vs Andre Winner - no idea, to be honest, neither guy really stood out during the season
Lightweight bout: Joe Stevenson vs Nate Diaz - I'm really surprised that Stevenson is the underdog here, I don't think Diaz is good enough to sub him and I can't see him winning a decision or by KO
Prelims
Lightweight bout: Melvin Guillard vs Gleison Tibau - I guess there's a chance Melvin will KO him before being subbed but it's not likely
Welterweight bout: Brad Blackburn vs Edgar Garcia - Garcia by TKO
Light Heavyweight bout: Mike Ciesonlevicz vs Tomasz Drwal - decision
Welterweight bout: Nick Osipczak vs Frank Lester - Frank's got heart but he's just not that good, he might win if he can hold on and Nick gasses again but I don't think it'll happen
Lightweight bout: Jason Dent vs Cameron Dollar - Dent by TKO
TUF finale is live on Sunday at 11am EST on FuelTV.
Thanks for the heads up. :thumbsu:
Main card
Lightweight bout: Diego Sanchez vs Clay Guida - Hopefully Guida, but my head says Sanchez by decision.
Welterweight bout: DaMarques Johnson vs James Wilks - Wilks by TKO, I hope, DaMarques is a nob. Just echoing Ross's sentiments there. :D
Welterweight bout: Chris Lytle vs Kevin Burns - Lytle by TKO
Lightweight bout: Ross Pearson vs Andre Winner - I'm going to go with Pearson. Very gutsy customer and well-rounded fighter.
Lightweight bout: Joe Stevenson vs Nate Diaz - Agree with Ross. The more experienced Stevenson to win.
Prelims
Lightweight bout: Melvin Guillard vs Gleison Tibau - Tibau's ground skills too good.
Welterweight bout: Brad Blackburn vs Edgar Garcia
Light Heavyweight bout: Mike Ciesonlevicz vs Tomasz Drwal - Ciesonlevicz was impressive in debut, so I'll go for him here.
Welterweight bout: Nick Osipczak vs Frank Lester - Indeed, Frank is all heart, but Nick is too talented.
Lightweight bout: Jason Dent vs Cameron Dollar - Yep, Dent to win.

Main card
Lightweight bout: Diego Sanchez vs Clay Guida - Sanchez way too good. Although, depending on how Sanchez handles the weight, Guida could sneak a decision.
Welterweight bout: DaMarques Johnson vs James Wilks - Wilks by TKO, I hope, DaMarques is a nob (x3)
Welterweight bout: Chris Lytle vs Kevin Burns - Lytle by TKO
Lightweight bout: Ross Pearson vs Andre Winner - Winner should take it easily, but Ross is tough. I'll say Winner to stop him in the first or second.
Lightweight bout: Joe Stevenson vs Nate Diaz - Toss up for me. Nate will only get better where as I think Stevenson's about as far as he'll go. Stevenson decision though.
Prelims
Lightweight bout: Melvin Guillard vs Gleison Tibau - The start of the fight could be exciting, but Tibau should monster Guillard to the ground and submit him at some point.
Welterweight bout: Brad Blackburn vs Edgar Garcia - TKO 3rd.
Light Heavyweight bout: Mike Ciesonlevicz vs Tomasz Drwal - decision
Welterweight bout: Nick Osipczak vs Frank Lester - Should have enough to stop Lester within two.
Lightweight bout: Jason Dent vs Cameron Dollar - decision
Gonna be a pretty rough Sunday morning for me as I'm in Perth at the moment. I was planning on a big one for Saturday night so getting up at 730 for the final episode will be fun.
Just copying my tips from the lonely thread I made, probably should have just chucked em in here in the first place...
Its on this weekend, looking at the card it has some really interesting match us that are hard to pick, so should be a good night of fights.
Main card
Lightweight bout: Diego Sanchez vs. Clay Guida - This has all the makings of a war. I think Guida wont have the wrestling advantage he usually does and Diego's cardio is always great so I'm picking Deigo by decision or late sub. They only way I could see Guida taking this would be a Hug and Pray decision.
Welterweight Finale bout: DaMarques Johnson vs. James Wilks - DaMarques used to grate on me, but I have warmed to him. Hope he takes the fight for Team USA
Lightweight Finale bout: Andre Winner vs. Ross Pearson - Winner I think is more well rounded and should finish Ross reasonably easy.
Welterweight bout: Chris Lytle vs. Kevin Burns - tough to pick. Lytle by decision.
Lightweight bout: Joe Stevenson vs. Nate Diaz - another difficult one. Diaz has the edge with the grappling IMO, especially his guard, but Joe Daddy has more experience and really needs the win. 50/50, I'm going Stevenson as a bit of an upset.
Preliminary card
Lightweight bout: Melvin Guillard vs. Gleison Tibau - suprised this is on the prelims but I guess there is no other room. Haven't seen Guillard for a while. Gleison by Sub I'd say.
Welterweight bout: Brad Blackburn vs. Edgar Garcia - Thought Blackburn should have lost last time vs Chonan, I'm picking Garcia.
Light Heavyweight bout: Mike Ciesnolevicz vs. Tomasz Drwal - Close one. I think Ciesnolevicz has the edge, unless it's a quick KO from Drwal. Ciesnolevicz by Decision.
Welterweight bout: Nick Osipczak vs. Frank Lester - Glad Lester got a gig here. Hope to see him in the UFC. Love this guy. Heaps of heart and seems like a top bloke.
Lightweight bout: Jason Dent vs. Cameron Dollar - Dent I think.

What an incredible card!!! Some of the best fights I've ever seen all in the one package! :D I didn't see the preliminaries, but of the main card I tipped the winners of all five correctly.
Lightweight bout: Diego Sanchez vs. Clay Guida - This fight promised a lot and boy did it deliver! Absolutely sensational from both fighters. I thought the judges got the decision right.
Welterweight bout: DaMarques Johnson vs James Wilks - Haha. A very sweet victory. It was great watching DaMarques lose, but this was a very entertaining fight by its own right. Terrific effort by Wilks. Good luck to him in the UFC.
Welterweight bout: Chris Lytle vs Kevin Burns - Absolute war. Another terrifically entertaining Lytle fight. Burns showed great courage and just about won the fight at the end of the first round as he certainly had Lytle in trouble.
Lightweight bout: Ross Pearson vs Andre Winner - Very close fight that could have gone either way. Wasn't the most entertaining, but both men certainly gave it their all.
Lightweight bout: Joe Stevenson vs Nate Diaz - Solid performance by Stevenson in another entertaining fight. He was a bit too physically strong for Nate.
An awesome card. I'd appreciate it if anyone could share what happened in the preliminaries.
