View Full Version : 70K Crowd

When was the last time Essendon V Carlton drew an attendance 70K + for a home and away match?

I'm guessing it would go back to 2001 when Carlton last made the finals.

Is it possible this could be the week we get our blockbuster back on track?

OR will it hold out until our 2nd meeting when it's our home game, we'll possibly field a stronger team and the Bomber fans will show up?

My tip

Carlton V Essendon Rd 3 Crowd 65K

Essendon V Carlton Rd 13 Crowd 78K

Don't think Easter weekend will help this week either as a lot of people go away.

Yeah, I don't think Easter will produce the best crowds, but that said, I'm sure someone will have some stats which could prove me wrong.

I can't see the crowd being less than 60k especially with Carlton being 2-0 and it being their home game, and Essendon getting on the board to be 1-1 will hopefully mean a lot of Bombers faithful get to the game.

I'll be there, and I just hope we make it a contest.

I think 65k will be pretty close to the mark.

We've played them a few Easter Monday clashes back in the late 90's where we have had over 80 thousand.

Just noticed on the Ticketek website that they are now selling seats on the ground level of the Ponsford Stand which would indicate tickets sales are going well.

This WAS advertised as being general admission on the MCC website.

All Premium Seating (on level 2) has been exhausted and there is only single seats available in the Olympic and Southern Stands.

Reckon 70K + is looking okay now.

If people don't want to be stuck on the top deck of the stands I'd be pre purchasing tickets now.

65k.

Round 13 this year will be massive on the Friday night if we're up and about and Carlton still up their.

And we play Collingwood the week after that on the Friday night aswell.

Could be a MASSIVE 2 weeks for the club, hopefully all 3 clubs are in the 8 at that point and we flog em. :D

unless you want to sit on the top deck of any stand yes you will need to prebook.

General Admission seating areas:

Great Southern Stand

- Q1 to Q15

Ponsford Stand

- Q29 to Q36

Olympic Stand

- Q49 to Q57

There are only single seats available in the Southern Stand and Olympic Stands.
ALL seating on Level 2 is sold out.

Will be way over 50K

Brad the ticketek website is stuffed when it comes to ticket availability.

They only release tickets by aisles which means one day it may say allocation exhausted yet tomorrow they'll release another bay and say tickets available.

I wouldnt read too much into it.

brad
8 Apr 2009, 22:49
you might be right with that but at the start of this week M28-36 was General Admission in the Ponsford Stand now it is all being reserved.

they will only do this when the demand for tickets is high.

there is a lot more anticipation about this game than in previous years.

Carlton have 40K members with majority of them turning up.

There will be plenty of neutrals there who are in town for the long weekend who would want to go see two traditional rivals and I think we'll get more supporters there than what we did for our away game last year against them.

dave_27
8 Apr 2009, 23:05
No doubt we'll get more Essendon fans their than Round 13 last year.

Remember that crowd from about 3-4 years back when they scheduled us to play on mothers day :o

I am pretty sure the crowd was over 70k the first time we played in 2007.

Nope it was 64K. That was the game where we were 48pts up and Carlton came back and beat us by 3pts. Thanks Mr Fevola!

YES unless you're happy sitting top deck of any stand.

If you're going along with a group of people you might as well go straight to the Ponsford Stand as only single seats are left in the Southern and Olympic Stands.

If you're an AFL member email today says there is "some" walk up on the day on M, N and Q levels (just a couple of bays). No doubt these will fill up very quickly.

9 Apr 2009, 11:07
The bottom deck of the Ponsford behind the goals should have plenty of general admission no matter what time you turn up.

I think you'll find they have only opened up a bay or 2 for reserved seating in that area, the rest of the bays will be for walk up on the night.

Top of the Ponsford, Olympic and Southern is all General Admission aswell.

unless they decide to at the last minute because the MCC website had all the bottom deck of the Ponsford Stand down as general admission and have now taken it off their website and have NO bays down as general admission.

No matter what time you turn up? Surely you're kidding. If you rock up at 6.30pm and expect to get seats together on the ground level (if they have any available) you'd be being very stupid.

They've got 8 bays down the bottom of the Ponsford to sell and they're only upto M30 as far as reserved seating available.

Do you really think they're going to leave 6 bays behind the goals empty?

They will be general admission Brad.

In 3 days they won't be empty.

Have you looked at the two Collingwood games this year?

Lots of empty seats on the bottom level of the Ponsford Stand because they have made them reserved seating and people haven't purchased them.

Yes, the last time these two teams played in front of 65k+ was 2001, as you said.

I think there's no chance of 70k or more. I'll go with about 61-62k at most

I think anything under 70k would be abysmal. These are both two big teams and it think both think they can play finals. Should be 70 for sure.

Well I bought tickets today and could only get M30 (level 1 Ponsford)

I'm not sure what the deal is because there is no way that EVERY seat in the Southern and Olympic stands has been sold out.

If they have then we'll be looking at a crowd of about 75-80k.

The Southern Stand isnt sold out.

Its just the reserved seating in a few bays on level 1 and 2 thats sold out. The rest of the southern stand is for AFL members, Carlton reserved seat members and walk up general admission on the day.

Ok, so does that mean that anyone who buys a ticket at the ground will be able to sit anywhere on Level 3, in general admission section?

I think it really depends on the bomber supporters. carlton had 42500 last week against an interstate side and as this week is carltons home game you would assume majority of members would turn up as carlton are up and about. Albeit it is easter. As far as non members and essendon supporters, the bombers had a win last week which confidence will be lifted among supporters and as we know in these games the result can go either way. Realistically i think 65,000 will show up. Would be more if it was essendons home game.

I would expect the ground to be full . Whenever you speak to a Carlton fan , they say "We're coming" ; so it should be a big turnout .

I've made the trip down from Sydney and will be at the game tonight. But I expect it'll be around 53,000.
When I bought tix on Sunday, the PAX numbers were 26099 - 26101 - which isn't particularly impressive. Unless there's been a surge in sales this week or there'll be long queues at the gates tonight, it's hard to see how it's going to get over 55,000.
