Gonna rain on your parade...no, I don't ;)
Thas cool. Doesnt seem many ppl on BF are.
Beastie Boys are one of my all time favourite bands. "Check Your head" is THE quintessential Hip Hop album IMO and fully changed the way i listen to and appreciate music.
Cypress Hill and House of Pain in their hey day were awesome exponents of this genre as well IMO.
Me'shell NdegeOcello's "Plantation Lullabies" is also an awesome hip hop album.
I certainly wouldnt call myself a connoisseur of hip hop by any means, but i do appreciate and respect it for what it is.

I used to be really into the Beastie Boys. I travelled to Livid in 94 with only 30 bucks and a ticket just to watch the bboys. I watched them in 91 as well.
But then they got to big for their boots and turned into Business men with their Grand Royal brand.
I don't mind some aussie hiphop, but apart from a very small select few I cant really get into the stuff that's being released these days.
I really enjoyed Jurassic 5 and the Solesides crew.
For some reason I am starting to gain respect for eminem after reading a bit about him. Basically a very misunderstood person who was a victim of the conservative and presumptuous nature which Americans thrive on.

I listen to lots of hip-hop, but have yet to really delve into it completely. I played in a band with lots of hip-hop/funk influences and was surrounded by hip-hop nuts for 3 years, but was off on a dance/electronic/techno/whatever thing the whole time, and I'm only now starting to really chase up all the hip-hop that I hadn't gotten around to.
In fact, my band of the moment are Ozomatli who I saw a few days ago. Hip-hop mixed with South American grooves mixed with spanish lyrics mixed with a brass section mixed with nylon string guitars mixed with turntables and generously dipped in lots of PHUNK. I suppose they're not a true "hip-hop" band in the traditional sense, but when they go hip-hop, they do it as well as anybody else.
Let's see how many more times I can mention Ozomatli in the next month.
Jurassic 5
Swollen Members
Hilltop Hoods
only hip hop/rap i like.
Jurassic 5 and The Spooks rock....I listen to a lot of rap and hip hop.

Yep... they are the only two CD's I have of hip hop artists and they occupy a moment in time for me.
The rest of the stuff I have is on MP3 but is only a scant offering of the usual suspects....Ice-T / NWA, De la Soul, J5 etc.
Aussie Hip Hop... it is either good or woeful. Some of the rhyming I have heard is so cheesy it is amazing that it got airplay to begin with.
I saw Koolizm / Coolism (sp??) support the Resin Dogs when I was in Melbourne and thought they were fantastic.

In ye olde days, hip hop was the art of sampling music over a beat.
Rap was talking over a beat.
Then they combined it, so you can call it whatever you want.
Who cares really?
Today's best hip hop artist is DJ Shadow.

what?
have u ever heard of will smith??? p.diddy ??? ;)
HipHop covers most aspects of the culture. Graf, Djing, breaking and mcing.
Rap is as FIGJAM pointed out rhyming with a beat. You could say early pioneers of RAP would have been Afrikka Bambatta, KRSONE and many more including the ones you mentioned locky
Current HipHop to me is Solesides, Quannum Allstars and anything that comes out of Solesides (Dj Shadow).
DjShadow is one part of hiphop. He is a dj with turntable and producing skills. His music is all sample based.
I saw Dj Shadow last month at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney. Tis was funny how spun out he was at the amount of people that attended. I remember going to the '95 MoWax NYE party and it was a small affair. DjShadow spun some tunes and mingled with the small crowd. He made a mention of this night during his concert and I was like.."ehe I was there josh..I was there!"
:)
ps I know I am in self imposed exodus..but I couldn't help myself with this thread. I think I might just leave it to the GT boards. ;)

DJ Shadows U.N.K.L.E sidekick James Lavelle is worth seeing as a DJ act.
He's one guy who knows how to fuse hip hop and breakbeat very well, and funk it up!
And as a producer his remix of Ian Brown - F.E.A.R kicks assssss

While we are on more urban music, anyone like RNB?
I used to love Aaliyah, PM Dawn and most of Timbalands productions...and to an extent Timberlakes new stuff.
But the stuff Im hearing these days is absolute crud. Nelly, Ja Rule and Shaggy and other supposed stars do absolutely nothing for me. I cant stand 10 mins in a RNB style club.
Its amazing how the world changes. A white guy is the most popular rapper on the planet, Timberlakes star is rising and a black guy is the world best golfer :P

Love it Locks.
It's getting more airplay in clubs and I've changed from hating it to liking it. I'm hopeless on the names but I don't mind Shaggy's new song (bit of a porno song).
There is also another...put your hands up if you're ******* tonight... Don't know who sings it but it goes off at a club.
Unrelated but the new GA Cd will be the best album of 2003. Absolute gold.

Yeah U.N.K.L.E is nice. Have you heard the Headz compilations? Old but still classics! I have this 45min set James Lavelle did in 97. Some nice stuff...****ted that he dropped MoWax though. Innovative label with some awesome acts!

My fav Ian Brown song from "Music of the spheres"! I admit I haven't heard the remix though.
As for RNB I hate it. Cheesy over produced crap. I really cannot last 1 minute in those types of clubs.
Katalyst from Sydney are funking it up atm. The only problem is I have been exposed to so much turntablism that I am not appreciating it like I used too.
Any Kool Keith fans here?

Few, I'm not the only one who doesn't mind Timberlake's new stuff, that said I'm still kinda embarrassed with myself!
I loved PM Dawn's Got Me Floating reminds me of USA '94 since SBS used it during their coverage!
Aaliyah was a great talent pity she died so young. Got into 2Pac pretty big round the same time he died.
I still get confused as to what's hip-hop, rap, then there's R&B, Soul and the old great New Jack Swing :p
Here's the groups, individuals from those genres I liked (don't laugh):
Bobby Brown - was a huge fan for several years, don't ask me why!
Bell Biv DeVoe ... BBD, Funky ;)
Arrested Development
Boyz II Men (some of their stuff)
2Pac
Liked some of the stuff from LL Cool J, House of Pain, NWA, Ice T, Naughty by Nature ... OPP, Yeah you know me, De La Soul, Public Enemy, Snoop, Will Smith (kill me, please!), P.Diddy (even though he's an absolute tosser and I despise him) and more recently Eninem
I'm more into alternative/rock these days though
Yup, love hip hop/ r n b. I really started to like it last summer in NY, probably because the club I went to most often seemed to exclusively play black oriented music, hip hop, rap, r n b and Jamaican stufff. (Whenever they used to play 'Nothin' by N.O.R.E. it just went off completely!)
Favourite artists: Dr Dre, Notorious B.I.G., Eminem, Jay Z, NWA

I love Will Smith's earlier incarnation as the Fresh Prince when he was with DJ Jazzy Jeff.
He had some amazingly funny songs with some great beats - Parents Just Don't Understand, Who Stole My Car, I Don't Know What Made Me Think I Could Fight Mike Tyson.
I love early 90s rap/hip hop:
Public Enemy, House of Pain, 3rd Base, NWA, ICE T, Ice Cube.
Clever, lyrical, not all just about babes, drugs and guns - it has a message - unlike so much of the stuff released today.
At a pinch I like Snoop and am now growing to like Eminem - a very clever man.
What I really like about the early 90s hip hop was that it extended my knowledge and appreciation of music. Some of the samples are amazing and I've chased them up and that's resulted in me having an even greater affection for 60s soul and Blues as well as some of the Blaxploitation stuff of the 70s. If it weren't for Rap and particularly DJ JJ and the FP and Public Enemy, I may never have found Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield or even Funkadelic and Parliament.

It really ****es me off when people differntiate between hip hop and rap in a musical sense.
I've had dumb ****s tell me that Naughty By Nature is hip-hop whereas NWA is rap.
F***wits.
For me, the Ol' Skool around 1988-1991 is still at the head of the class. This was the era of BDP, NWA, PE, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, EPMD, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Brand NUbian, Geto Boys, Digital Undergound and the list goes on.
Today's stuff is what De La once described R'N'B as..

PE a group a crew not singular...
Got to agree with most of the stuff re: current rap. It's dumbed down for the "consumer culture" we live in, plus it gives little boys something to masturbate to because they aspire to get shot whilst crusin' in their crib.
We live in a bad world when mediocre, semi-literate thugs such as 50 Cent are heroes to image-paranoid, semi-literate boys in the 'burbs.

All I can say is I'm glad Prince Paul is still making records.
