Matthew Hayden has been fined 20% of his match fee ($2200) after smashing a door after being dismissed late today.

Adam Gilchrist was severely reprimanded after showing dissent to an umpire's decision when an appeal for a catch behind off Steve Harmison was turned down.

Interesting that Australia's breaches of the Code of Conduct came in a dead rubber; probably signifies how they can crack mentally and physically (injuries) when the opposition puts up a decent fight, as England have in the last couple of Tests.

MacGill was probably lucky not to be reported from what I saw of his reaction to an LBW against Steve Harmison being turned down; strange how the NO. 11 caused so much frustrations for the Australian side today.

Gilchrist was right though.

Latest in a long line of occasions where Australian players show that they cannot control themselves when things aren't going their way. Disappointing from two of the "nicer" blokes in the team.

He was wrong to show dissent. As mentioned there have been plenty of incorrect decisions this series, if a player is allowed to spit it every time they are on the wrong end of one (they don't seem to mind so much when they get one their way) the game will get out of control. You've got to draw a line somewhere.

yes, memories of when the west indies were touring here when gilchrist was captain, things were out of control, including ponting firing the ball at sarwan when it was dead.
another was when mcgrath spat at the windies opener at barbados i think.
Macgill bumping the 12th man Sarwan when he was walking back to the pavilion.
The disgraceful way slater went on at Rahul Dravid after a low catch was turned down by the 3rd umpire, calling him a cheat for not walking.

but when you watch the test series between sri lanka and south africa, they make the australians look like something out of the muppet show.

Ditto that

It's embarrassing how poorly we seem to deal with adversity.

Interesting that Gilchrist got fined for showing a bit of dissent, yet in a recent NZ v India one-day game,Jacob Oram [NZ] & Anil Kumble [India] almost came to blows at the end of an over. The umpire stepped in between them, but decided not to report them.Next Kumble over, the slanging continued.Surely that is worse.

I'm not sure whether Hayden deserves the "nice" tag. South African batsman Graeme Smith talked about after the 2002 Test series against Australia how Matthew Hayden liked to dish out the verbal stuff on the field.

And Hayden has had a fair few verbal altercations to Shoaib Akhtar over recent times.

And during the 2000 Test match against the West Indies where the Australian team lost their cool (already mentioned in this thread), a West Indian batsman had to pull out as the bowler was about to deliver the ball because Hayden was verballing him from Short Leg.

It's not so much the actions themselves of the Australians - it's the context. We've been dominating series for several years - are up 4 blot in this one and as soon as the team is put under a bit of pressure they start spitting dummies like little kids. Surely Nasser Hussain would have had more reason to smash a window this summer - yet somehow he has refrained.

Great team talent wise but less than great in the sportsmanship dept.

Don't you remember Nasser kicking the crap out of Simon Jones crutches in the 1st test ?

Yet Caddick gets away with his "theatrics" during the series

I think the ref took pity on him.You have to feel a bit sorry for a Kiwi who plays for England. :D

Bad example from me

My point remains though - I can understand frustration boiling over into reckless actions but the Australians dummy spit threshold is way too short.

Who is going to fine Orchard and Tiffin for gross incompetence?
Surely they should have to answer some questions after their deplorable performances in the past two tests.
And before anyone says it ... yes, England had shocking decisions go against them as well.

You gotta feel sorry for someone who needs there ears pinned back more than Gilly.

Imagine the extra pace he could generate coming into the wicket with his wings a bit more streamlined.

I thought Hayden got off pretty lightly myself. Wouldn't have been surprised to see him suspended.

I suppose it comes down to exactly how the door was broken. If he broke it by throwing his bat through it, that deserves a suspension. If he broke it by slamming it too hard or something, then the penalty is appropriate.
