So those of you heading down to training who of Selwood, Brennan, corrie and Merrett would you suggest taking??

It is one of the add on options in Victorian membership I think.

From memory it is where you pay a certain number of dollars to 'sponsor' a particular player, not too sure what the money is supposed to be for.

You get things like your pic with that player, a certificate of sponsorship, invite to a player sponsors lunch or the likes.

If allystar is around she could tell you. I'm pretty sure she sponsored Copeland in 2002.

Thats my understanding of it, so I think you're right Danni.

Does anyone know if the player actually gets any of that money.

No the player doesn't get any money from it, it all goes back to the club.

It costs $355 and here is what you get....

Signed framed picture of player with plaque.
Entry to one pre game warm up in the rooms.
A player sponsor dinner.

Not really doing it for the benefits, more for the money to go to the club.

Sounds alright if you've got the extra money to blow. Obviously a few people under 18 hereor haven't been involved in sporting clubs much.

Yes, KG, I think I remember something about that in the dim, dark past. Maybe these days they figure there would be too many requests up here in Brisbane and it would be too hard to control (but think of how much extra income they would derive from it).

I have a signed, framed photo of Chris Johnson, courtesy of the VLSG player sponsorship for 2002. A pretty good season to sponsor Johno, considering he was AA, and played in back-to-back Premierships.

The photo itself is quite large, and very nicely framed. It would most likely be worth a bit, considering the circumstances.

hey i wonder if anyone has taken any of the younger kids.... & the rookie listers...........

Danni
20 Jan 2003, 21:44
I'm not sure if the rookies are eligible for sponsorship or if it is just listed players?

Unfortunately not every player gets a sponsor. Ppl choose who they want to sponsor and that is that. For example last year some players had 6 or 7 sponsors, and others had none.

I'm sure some ppl will step up to the plate and give the 'younger' ones on the list some deserved recognition.

oh ok.. that would be interesting to find out if rookie listed players can be sponsored........... it would certainly take a while for me to decide

Do you have to be a member of the club. Or can a business sponser a player.

Shame that some of the current players havent had sponsers. I bet the Lynch, Aka, Voss and Blacks would be popular.

So, its only for Vic members. What a shame.

It might be only for only Victorian members but after all we are already being screwed for our membership ticket. Who actually plans on going to Brisbane for 4 matches during the season? to go up for 1 costs more than the season ticket does.

lets just see if it really is just melbourne members.........

The VLSG has sponsored a number of players over the past three years and it's certainly a great way of supporting the club. Any benefits derived are passed onto our members.

Jarrod Molloy 2000
Martin Pike 2001
Chris Johnson 2002

It looks as if 2003 members will be able to choose their sponsored player from a short list of Chris Johnson, Martin Pike, Alistair Lynch, Luke Power, Jonathan Brown and Troy Selwood.

We try and pick someone with some sort of Fitzroy connection. Don't know what's going to happen in a few years.

Yeah I will be joining up this year most probably. I will also purchase a Victorian Membership once I've worked out what games I can attend this year.
