GOLD COAST FOOTBALL CLUB SIGN GUGLIOTTA FOR 2010
12.04.09
The Gold Coast Football Club has recruited the Northern Territory’s Michael Gugliotta for the 2010 season.
The 18-year old will this year play with SANFL club South Adelaide after missing out on last year’s AFL draft before joining the GCFC squad later this year.

A 195cm defender, Gugliotta will train under GCFC coach Guy McKenna in preparation for the 2010 season, in which the club will participate in VFL competition, before joining the AFL in 2011.

GCFC Recruiting Manager Scott Clayton said Gugliotta was unlucky to miss out on the 2009 draft and will benefit from a year of senior football with the Panthers.

“Michael is a very athletic player for his size and he will continue to develop as he enters a full training program firstly with South then with the new GCFC team,” he said.

“We are delighted that Michael has agreed to join us and be part of the Gold Coast Football Club journey to AFL in 2011. He will be given every opportunity to develop into a first class player in our elite training program and under the instruction of Guy McKenna and his team.”

His name reminds of my days playing NBA Jam in the early/mid 90s.

"To Gugliotta, To Gugliotta, he's heating up!!!"

I read somewhere that we might have a change of heart and play in the Qafl next year.

QAFL would be a backwards step, I mean it is the weakest comp in AUstralia and this is evidenced where guys like Ty Zantuck can dominate...wouldnt happen anywhere else...

I understand that hesitance, but look at it this way: a weak comp means easy wins, which means the team swill be galvanised and confident, also, a winnign season wil attract more supporters and attention, especially playing locally every week.
Tbh, I can see the argument from both sides, either way has its ups and downs.

Where will the GC seconds play, btw? In the AFLQ ala Suncoast Lions?

The QAFL may mean easy wins but it also will stall some players development which is not what GC will want given they are entering the AFL in the next season.

As much as team confidence is important, i dont think you need to be dominating to have that, i can see some special bonds being developed by the players with every second week travelling to Melbourne to play.

I agree having a good season would attract a little more interest from the locals which is important but imagine what a good year in the VFL could do as well. Give the Melbourne public a good glimpse of what is to come the next year not to mention try and improve the Melbourne fan base which will be important come 2011. Also gives the contracted players some idea of what they can expect in the first year in regards to travel, preperation and even some of their opponents.

Personally i think the football club would be crazy to play in the QAFL but that is just my opinion.
