Rock legend faces kid-porn probe
By STEVE KENNEDY

A BRITISH rock superstar faces a police probe into child porn, it emerged
last night.

The hell-raising music legend is said to have downloaded sick images from
the Net.

The rocker, identified by the FBI, is married with children and lives in
Britain. He has not been named.

His name was on a list of 7,000 subscribers to internet child porn.

His credit card details and email address turned up when US authorities
smashed a sick pay-per-view computer service.

The hellraising rocker, who is married with kids and lives in Britain, is
now at the centre of inquiries into whether he downloaded porn.

He is the third high-profile British music personality to be linked to child
sex offences.

Glam-rock star Gary Glitter was jailed for possessing vile computer pictures
of kids while twisted pop mogul Jonathan King went to prison for attacks on
teenage boys.

The Americans passed thousands of names on to British police after closing
down the Texas-based ring.

The musician, who cannot be identified, is a household name on both sides of
the Atlantic and has been involved in major films.

He is under investigation by detectives from Scotland Yard, who will decide
whether to arrest him.

If they do, he will become the highest profile person to be held under
Operation Ore - the largest ever investigation into online paedophilia in
the UK.

So far around 1,300 people have been arrested, including a judge,
magistrate, dentists, hospital consultants and a former deputy headmaster.

Fifty police officers have been arrested and eight charged.

They include Det Constable Brian Stevens, 41, of Cambridgeshire Police, one
of the family liaison officers in the Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman murder
inquiry in Soham.

DC Stevens has been charged with making indecent images of children and
indecently assaulting two girls.

The rock star's name and details were given to British police last month.

Their investigation into his background is expected to last for several
weeks.

They are especially anxious to make certain his credit card had not been
stolen or "cloned" by a criminal before being used to download porn.
They are also investigating the possibility that the card had been used by
someone else.

A police source said: "The high profile of this celebrity means we have to
be absolutely sure before we make an arrest."

The names of the 7,000 suspects passed to Operation Ore have been put into
several different categories.

One category is made up of anyone with direct access to children such as
teachers, doctors and social workers.

Another is for those who hold positions of authority, such as cops and
magistrates.

Operation Ore began last spring after the US postal service uncovered a
subscriber website for paedophiles which had 75,000 names worldwide.

Glam-rock star Gary Glitter, 59, was previously the highest-profile
paedophile snared for downloading kiddie porn.

He was jailed for four months after vile pictures were found stored on a
laptop he took into PC World for repair.

Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was cleared of having under-age sex with a
14-year-old girl at his trial but admitted building up the disgusting hoard
of porn.

He fought back tears after pleading guilty to having pictures of kids as
young as two.

Judge Neil Butterfield was slammed for sentencing him to just four months at
Bristol Crown Court when he could been jailed for three years on each of 54
charges.

After being released from prison Glitter fled abroad.
Only this week he was also arrested and deported by the Cambodian
authorities.

He was held on Christmas Day in the capital Phnom Penh for offences against
young boys and locked up for three days in a filthy cell.

He fled to Thailand after being given bail and then jetted off to Vietnam's
capital Ho Chi Minh City two days later.

The fallen star - already banned from Cuba - has been high on Cambodia's
list of foreign "undesirables" since The Sun tracked him down there.

Townshend has always creeped me out for some reason.

Please not Bowie, the bloke is a legend, I would hate to see it all end like this.

Cliff Richard used to star in many films, he is the only other one I can think of at this stage. Ugh.

I was shattered enough when Glitter was done.

Wasn't there an indecent assault charge against Townshend in the late 80s, something about an incident with young boys?

Peter, Peter, Peter ... what the hell were you thinkin'?

For what it's worth, I'm inclined to believe Pete's account of proceedings. His actions in coming clean do not appear to fit the profile of typical paedophilic behaviour.

What they do reflect is extremely naive behaviour on Pete's behalf, and even if cleared he's got some serious accounting for his actions to do. He has given money to one of these appalling organisations, and therefore indirectly and inadvertently endorsed their seedy operations, directly nourished their funds, and probably contributed to further crimes against children.

They arrested him yesterday, he's getting loads of sh1t from the anti child abuse groups.

I suffer from adegree of gullability at times & at first I found myself kinda buying his 'research' story but it's looking worse & worse for him know.

One thing he's sure to regret is a photo that was taken of him with Gary Glitter a few years back, makes it looklike they were a couple of pervo mates.

I'm a huge who fan and this is pretty terrible news.

At this point I'm still accepting PT's story - he's pretty obsessive about pursuing ideas and causes, and often at personal detriment.

Apparantly he was surfing the net about 6 years ago with his (then) 10 y/o son and the clicked a popup ad that looked like a game, and got taken to a kiddy porn site. It flipped him out and he's had a bug up his butt over it ever since.

Bottom line is he has broken the law, and he will probably get charged, it'll be up to a court to decide what his intentions were

Until then I'll take the innocent until proven guilty approach. Rock musics lost enough legends to death and disgrace over the years, I'm not in a hurry to lose another one prematurely, until all the cards are out on the table.

Whether or not he did it for research purposes is a moot point. People love a scandal and will not listen to truth in search of a tall poppy to cut down.

Very naive for him to do what he has done.

If he truly wanted to 'see what was out there' he needed to do it openly before going online and giving his credit card number over. He needed to do it under the supervisor of the law or at least tell as many people what he was up to. I have seen good people had suspicion cast on them for the mere fact they were quiet about what they were doing, it is human nature to think the worst of someone.

NEWS - Pete Townshend May Have Proof Clearing Him In Child-Porn Investigation
01/30/2003

(1/30/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Pete Townshend may have some proof in his battle to clear his name against child-pornography allegations.

Britain's Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which works "to minimize the availability of illegal Internet content, particularly child abuse images," has announced that Townshend contacted the organization last year regarding some of the websites he had found while allegedly doing research into pedophilia. The IWF denied any such communication when Townshend was arrested earlier this month, but has now been able to produce some emails from last summer and autumn that seemingly back up the Who leader's claims.

Townshend issued this statement on his website (petetownshend.com): "You may recall that among the media frenzy of a couple of weeks ago, representatives of the Internet Watch Foundation told the press and the news stations that they had never heard from me. I, of course, know that I did communicate with them several times last year, and they have now supplied to us copies of my emails to them, one in August and the rest in November. My lawyers have written to the founder of the IWF, Mark Stephens, who was adamant that they had never heard from me, asking for an explanation."

For it's part, the IWF says it had no choice but to deny any prior contact with Townshend: "Because of the provisions of the Data Protection Act, we are unable to comment or disclose information about the personal details of individuals who make reports to us unless they give their permission."

Townshend was arrested and released on bail on January 13 after British police searched his house as part of Operation Ore, an ongoing pedophilia investigation. He has so far not been charged with any crime. He was taken in as part of an ongoing investigation into Internet child pornography around the world after his name and credit-card information was found at a pedophile website. Townshend has admitted visiting a handful of child-pornography sites and using his credit card to enter one, although he claims he was doing research for his upcoming autobiography, and that the book will include a claim of sexual abuse between the ages of five and six-and-a-half years old while he lived with his maternal grandmother (the alleged abuse came from a male friend of his grandmother's).

In an interview with the British tabloid The Sun published before he was taken into custody, Townshend said, "I am angry about child porn on the Internet, and deeply wounded at the inference that I might be a pedophile. I have looked at child porn sites maybe three or four times in all, the front pages and previews. But I have only entered once using a credit card and I have never downloaded. With hindsight it was very foolish, but I felt so angered about what was going on, it blurred my judgment...I have never purchased any forms of child pornography or wished to own any...I was stupid to try to deal with my anger about child porn on the Internet alone. We must try to stop it but if we can't do that we should invest our energy in helping victims of abuse...it is important that the police are able to convince themselves that--if I did anything illegal--I did it purely for research. I am not a pedophile...I sincerely believed that the police would know my history as someone who works tirelessly to help the abused, and that since 1978 I have run a charity which has contributed millions to organizations working to prevent violence and abuse."
