Died today from a bowel blockage, age 53.
A legend. I got The Record by the Bee Gees for Christmas last year. An amazingly talented family.

Very sad to hear the news ... I've got a Bee Gees album ... it's called The Best Of The Bee Gees ... it came out in 1970, so it's got all those wonderful songs they did in mid-to-late 1960s, long before the disco thing. Songs like "Words", "I've Gotta Get a Message To You", "First Of May", "I Started A Joke", "New York Mining Disaster" and the hauntingly beautiful "Every Christian Lion-Hearted Man Will Show You". My old vinyl version (which I've no longer got) had "Spicks And Specks" (an absolute classic) but for some reason it's not on the CD version, which I bought a few years ago.
It's a pity the Bee Gees got tainted by that disco phenomenon ... although I must say, in retrospect, that "Stayin' Alive" was brilliant.
It's just a pity that Maurice couldn't be "stayin' alive" a bit longer.
R.I.P. Maurice Gibb.
RIP BG M.G.........
I got to liking their music through my dad who played a lot of thier stuff, and I'm glad I did because it is brilliant stuff! Very unique and talented group!
Sad news.....

Definitely very sad news. Best wishes to the family.
Got to see the Bee Gees at Festival Hall, in about 1971.
Circumstances were: Went to MSD, who used to distribute tickets, on the day of the concert. Asked if they had any tickets for the Bee Gees concert. All behind the counter laughed uproariously.
"You've got to be kidding, it's been sold out for two months."
Then, one of them asked someone out the back, "Did those people who rang bring back those tickets?"
"Yeh, they just arrived."
In short, I was the very pleased beneficiary of a journalist returning tickets he couldn't use. Sad part was they were only two rows back, right in the middle.
Best re-creation of a studio sound I've ever heard, sooled on by a 70 piece orchestra. Amazing harmonies. So tight. A totally professional outfit, who also happened to write perfect pop songs.
If you've never heard 'Every Christian Lionhearted Man', do yourself a favour. Proud to say I've got the same album Alf has, on vinyl, with 'Spicks and Specks', another excellent pop song.

This is the stuff I grew up on and Maurice was always my favourite member for some strange reason.
R.I.P. Maurice :(

Yes I also have the same album which I purchased in 1973.
Spicks and Specks is only in mono which is why it may have been left off the CD version.

As always, the Bee Gees were a class act last night on The Grammys. Handled themselves very well when recieving their honorary award, which they gave to Maurice's son.

Just a note: the BeeGees greatest hits compilation that was released a couple of years ago (double CD set) has 'Spicks and Specks' on it, and I agree it's a brilliant song. A few of my other personal favourites are 'Run To Me', 'Nights on Broadway', 'How Deep Is Your Love' and 'New York Mining Disaster'. never heard 'Every Christian Lion-Hearted Man Will Show You' but am now curious. Very talented and under-rated group, and Maurice was my favourite also. Was very sad to hear of his passing. lol I do realise I am a little late saying that, but wasn't round BigFooty at the time.
Just rewatched a doco. on the Bee Gees made in America. Pretty ghastly.
Why do the British make much better music docos than the Yanks?
Especially about American music?
When asked his favourite Bee Gees song, Robin mentioned a song called 'Holiday'. Arguably their best song.
