Gilly and Ponting are my favourite batsmen as well as Martyn, and I like all the bowlers (McGrath, Warne, Lee and Gillespie).
My favourite overall would have to be Gilly and Ponting though.
Overall favourite is Watson. For the simple reason that he's had to fight for everything he's achieved so far, and I see him as good value. Plus, I'm sick of all the flack he cops.
Not to mention the fact I think he's a total spunk.. :p
Dizzy, Boof, McGrath, Steve Waugh and Punter in the international ranks.
Ben Johnson and Chris Davies for the Redbacks.

You have got to be kidding! I know you are a Port fan so you should know better, Watson has achieved nothing and 'had to fight for it'??? The guy has the biggest gold pass in the history of any sport ever. He is useless when he plays for state cricket and the mere fact that he plays for his country is ridiculous because of the fact that he plays so poorly for his state.
Had to fight for everything he's achieved? It is completely the other way around, handed a spot in the ODI side for everything he hasn't achieved.
Me thinks your latter statement is the most likely reason he is your favourite, on his cricket ability it would be impossible for him to be anyones favourite, unless you are a sadist.

Rick Darling, Martin Kent and Murray Bennett.

'Being a Port fan, you should know better'? Come off it. This makes it sound like everyone has to comform to a set series of rules and isnt allowed to think for themselves.
Realistically, you're judging me without even knowing me. Yes, I think he's a spunk, and NO, thats NOT the reason why he's my favourite. He's my favourite, because of the fact that someone needs to show some support for the poor bastard. I see potential in him, and if other people dont, then they can keep thinking that way. I know I wont be able to convince anyone to realise that this guy could be brilliant, because you're all so one minded about it anyway, and have convinced yourselves that he's nothing.
In regards to the gold pass - I think its fair to say that the selectors see something in him that you - or anyone else that brazenly hits out at him - doesnt. And I probably see it too. His strokeplay is brilliant, he's fluent and he doesnt mess around. But why am I bothering to express my opinion on him, you're too gelled up with thinking that he isnt worth it. Not everyone is automatically prepared for the pressure that comes with ODI and/or Test selection. He's still got youth on his side, and he'll become a better player with age.

True he isn't prepared for pressure that comes with ODI selection, he wasn't prepared for state selection and played poorly for his state. Youth is all he has, and that is good for him, but until he starts performing at state level there is no way he should have even been considered for national selection.
I'm no doubting he has potential, he does have some class with the bat, but until he can prove he can hack it at firstly state level he shouldn't be a spot for him in the national side. Cricket aint footy, the national team should not be used to nurture youth into becoming good players, that is what state cricket is supposed to be for.

These are Watson's averages in the current VB series.
Batting: 69.00
Bowling: 23.00
Not good enough?

Lets just try and stick to the topic, shall we?

Three innings, two not outs. Red ink always inflates.

And batting towards the end of the innings reduces the likelihood of dismissal, thus inflating one's average. I seriously wouldn't expect Watson to make 69 every time he bats.

You have a point. But he's good enough to. I'd like to see him pushed up the order so he can show us what he's got. Take Andy Bichel for example. Thrown in at number three in the last Test and made 49. Not bad.

Dizzy and Ponts are great too though.

Agree about Haydos and Langer - as an opening pair they're sensational. Not only do they score buckets of runs, but they get them very quickly.
Warnie's another favourite of mine - has been for years.

I dont reckon thats right at all. I dont think hes as bad as everyone is saying, but hes certainly been given a gold pass. Its the exact opposite of having to fight for everything.

fight for everything he's acheived???? on a recent survey i saw (gladstones i think) he was voted the luckiest cricketer to be going to the world cup, and that includes all nations.
You know what? We've already had this conversation. Dont come to me ranting and raving about Shane when you already know what I think. I refuse to justify my opinions again and again, just so you can give me **** about his so called 'gold pass.'

thats the most common misconception regarding averages. not outs do not inflate your average in any way. the mere fact is that potentially more runs were cut short due to the end of the innings. averages extrapolate the not outs to a more likely score had you been given the opportunity to bat further.
the real way averages can be inflated is due to a small number of innings. when you divide by higher numbers the measure of central tendancy tends towards your real average. the higher the number of times you have been dismissed, the more accurate the reflection of average is. someone who has only batted 3 times could have a very misleading average, whereas someone who has batted 100 times has a very true average.

if anything i propose that not outs in the long run decrease your average. the more times you have to go in and make a start.
a batsman is most likely to get out between 1-10. so if the innings is always closing every time he gets to 10, sure he's going to have a lot of not outs, but he also has to make more starts, and hence would get out more often than if he was allowed to continue from his score of 10.

He wasn't put up the order to show what he has got, he was put up the order as a night watchman, used soley as a sacrifice to bat out a few overs at the end of the day so that quality batsmen didn't get dismissed before stumps.
It is a very common occurence in cricket to put a bowler up the order as a night watchman late in the day.

Certainly it's not unprecedented for a night watchman to bat on and get a big score the next day. But Bichel came in well before stumps and got 49 before the end of that day.

The gold pass theory is true, but his U/19 World Cup performances dictate that he should be persevered with and given an extended chance.

Marto used to be my favourite when he used to play a cavalier game, it then turned to langer for sentimentality and now Hoggy because his enthusiasm rubs off on me.
Probably Gilespie.
All time would be Dennis Lillee.
As far as averages go. An average over 3 innings when 2 of them are not out is useless. (If they were all not outs then he would average 0)
An average isn't how many runs you make an innings.
It is just a mathematical equation of how many runs you make before being OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! (There is a huge difference).
It takes around 20 innings before you can read anything into it. (By that time you should go out a few times:eek: )
Langer, Rogers, Goodwin, Martyn, Hussey, Campbell, Gilchrist, Hogg, Angel, Williams, Clark, Wilson.
