Good call PP. I'm tired of this football stuff. I hate losing.
Here is 'The Mysterious Cities of Gold'. Great show that used to be on the ABC of an afternoon.

Monkey was a great show. I watched in its second running in Australia (would have been around 1989).
Captain Planet (Was he the first metrosexual?)

I've never seen Captain Planet, although I do remember when it was on TV. Interesting how one of the team represents Russia, while the others represent entire continents. Where's the logic? Couldn't be that Russia was communist (presuming this was before the change to democracy?), because Asia's inclusion disregards China.
Theories?
As for CP being the first metrosexual... I don't know. Mr Squiggle might be a contender. He was an artist after all.

That was a great show. The maze was the best part and the prizes were awesome (Game Boys).

ghostdog you raise an important question with regards to CP. The program started in 1990, which was just prior to the break up of the Soviet Union, thus I agree with you that Linka is probably an artifact of the Cold-War. I might also add that 'heart' is not a legitimate power.
Damn I wanna use a gameboy now.

Heh, I think everyone who ever saw his "power" came to the same conclusion. :D
Lets see, in addition to the few I posted in the thread we derailed. I should apologise that all mine are cartoons as I've been youtubing childhood cartoons recently (that and I watched a lot of cartoons as a child, although I'd forgotten about round the twist and spellbinders. Funny stuff.) :

I might also add that 'heart' is not a legitimate power.
So the inclusion of the Soviet Union was in the interest of promoting global friendship? Linka was the linker. Nice!
Yeah, the idea of trying to pass off the power of 'heart' reeks of the need to attract the female market. Soft. (Apologies to any feminists out there)
Another illegitimate power was The Care Bear stare.
My partner has asked me to recommend Degrassi High. She knows what time it is :D

I checked out A Town Called Panic and it is awesome. :thumbsu: I used to watch the original Degrassi Junior all the time and it was great. It reminded me of Press Gang of which my sister has the first 2 seasons on dvd. Spike (Dexter Flectcher) was so cool.

Yeah, I have to say despite the fact Degrassi actually started before press gang I only ever saw Degrassi after I'd already started watching Press gang and I just couldn't get into Degrassi at that point because I found PG way better (that, and spike was cool).

I remember this show well. It was funny. People got slimed every episode. :thumbsu:
I didn't realise it then, but the opening sequence is very similar to Monty Python opening sequences.

Ah Pugwash, such a catchy theme, such an annoying show. At least I never found it funny.
As for the urban legend of the shows names, I've heard that before but it is explained false here:
Pugwash Rumours (http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/pugwash.asp)
Also, I used to love "You Can't Do That on Television". Ah the slime, good times.

It's a Knock Out, Fresh Prince, Around the Twist, Bangers & Mash (lol), Degrasi Junior High, Heartbreak High (they had a half pipe at school, as if it wasn't cool!).
But the best show, even though it wasn't exactly childhood era and more so teenage angst years, must obviously go to Recovery! From a time when music was actually good, hosted by awesome people like Dylan Lewis and Angus Sampson (The Enforcer) and even cool enough to dedicate time to an entire episode of Monkey! Australian TV died a bit when this show was cancelled.
More to come...

If I may add to the Captian Planet "Heart" debate:
It's so weird how you pick these things up like 12 years later -
My sister, neighbourhood kids and I used to gather and watch CP after school then run out on to the street and recreate the episode (same goes for the Power Rangers...)
and yeah the issue was their was 3 girls 3 guys ans since CP himself couldn't be a girl we'd make little sister Heart because his voice was girlish. True story.
Definitely one of those inclusions to promote the power of positive thinking and female audiences.
And still the most awesome show from the 90's.
Honourable mentions to the Power Rangers

I remember that the pink power ranger, who was supposed to be female, had a definite bulge in the groin region when wearing the helmet and performing fly kicks etc. Apparently the female actor was not capable of performing the awesome power ranger moves. What a loser.

The origional Power Rangers series was pretty boss. I remember going to the live show when they did in probably like '98 or '99ish, got one of those light up swords that extended when you flung it forwards. Good times, good times.

There was a lot of stuff on ABC that I can kinda remember. Raggy Dolls, Johnson and Friends (!), Fireman Sam (which has really boss theme music, actually), there was something I think called the Dreamstone or whatever and that was pretty cool... The Animals of Farthing Wood was amazing since the MO was "kill everyone all the time and show no goddamn mercy" which is... unusual to say the least for a children's show. But effective, I must say.
There was also an animated version of Treasure Island with animals and shit that no one ever remembers. But I love that too. Then there's Babar and Tintin...
And yeah, the original Power Rangers, most definitely.
Mumbo Jumbo

Babar, alias the Jester, Bananaman, Fat Tulip's Garden, He-man, TMNT, Pete & Pete, Voltron, Gummi Bears, Blockbuster, Darkwing Duck, Rugrats, Cluedo, Sale of the Century
Oh, and Whomb's fav show was Franklin, the shitty little turtle ;)
Some classics there, but there are so many more...
Inspector Gadget, Battle of the Planets (G-Force), Secret Valley, The Henderson Kids! Hadn't thought of any of these in about 25-30 years!

Maybe she just packed down there with socks to feel like one of the guys.
Degrassi High was ****en hardcore, it dealt with themes like aids suicide and abortion. I was only 5 and had no idea what was going on so I was probably just watching it to hear songs from zit remedy.
Animals of farthingwood was also pretty dark for a kids show.
