February 6 2005 (http://content.cricinfo.com/pakvaus2009/engine/match/65667.html) was the last time Australia met Pakistan in an ODI with only 2 of the players in that game in the current squad, with the Australians choosing to rest captain Ponting and Mike Hussey and Mitchell Johnson joining him. After 2 series losses against South Africa, and an unconvincing draw against New Zealand that was 15 minutes of Brisbane rain from being a defeat, Australia will turn to some new faces and some returning faces (Symonds, Marsh, Watson and Clark) to turn around their fortunes. Marsh and Watson look set to take back over opening duties with Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke sliding back down the order. Nathan Bracken will look to turn around a dissapointing 2009, Stuart Clark will be hoping to get a chance to prove his fitness for the Ashes, and Andrew Symonds will be hoping to get his name in the papers for all the right reasons for a change.
For Pakistan this will be just their 4th ODI game this year with a 2-1 series loss against Sri Lanka from the only games they have played this year including a humiliating 234 run defeat in their last game.

What makes Mitchell Johnson so special that he needs to rest from every second ODI? I don't steyn resting that much or any other fast bowler for that matter!
Cousin Jed

I doubt too many other fast bowlers have bowled 308 overs already this year?
Or 715 overs in 2008 either for that matter

pakistan are unpredictable at the best of times and the aussies aren't at full strength leaving ponting, m hussey and johnson at home to rest and lee & tait still out injured. this will give the likes of ferguson & d hussey an extended run in the odi side and a chance to gain a place in our best 11 when everyone is fit and firing.
i'd leave out a bowler and make the batting a bit stronger.
marsh
watson
m clarke
ferguson
symonds
d hussey
haddin
hopes
bracken, s clark, hilfenhaus, laughlin, bollinger & hauritz (play 3 of those 6 on rotation).
that gives us batting depth down to 8.
3 strike bowlers and hopes, watson, symonds, m clarke, d hussey to chip in with 20 or so overs.

Watson won't bowl though will he? From all reports he isn't ready to bowl. Hopes can get through 10 easily and has been doing a good job for some time.

Akhtar and Afridi are still there? Geez. Anyway, we've got a pretty weak team. It'll be interesting to see how we go.
What makes Mitchell Johnson so special that he needs to rest from every second ODI? I don't steyn resting that much or any other fast bowler for that matter!
Because he will be bowling 300 overs in the ashes.

It's been a long time coming but it's finally here.
Roy's back!!!
Hopefully he can play a starring role in the match. Also will be the first time back at international level without his famous dreads he'd been growing since 2003.
Hope Roy gets a ton.
And grabs a wicket or 2.
Hopefully the aussies can get up for win.
First beers are on me, Roy gets 2, drink under the Southern Cross!!!

Aussies have won the toss and elected to bat.
Shaun Marsh, Shane Watson, Stuart Clark, Andrew Symonds and Ben Hilfenhaus are all playing.

Bloody nice stadium. Good to see Haddin has been kept at the top of the order.
Glad they stuck with Haddin opening, he's been going so well there.
Now hopefully i haven't jinxed him.
I like the Haddin/Marsh combo, like to see Ferguson in at 3, Clarke 4, Watson 5 and Symonds 6.
Cousin Jed
22 Apr 2009, 21:03
Watto to bat at 3?
The dolce tones of A.J.Greig. Pitch looks very slow.
It's almost a team of allrounders.
OzBomber
22 Apr 2009, 21:07
Akhtar doesn't look like he'll be too much of a threat. Only getting 140 with a massive run up. Should come on to the bat nicely.
*Cue wickets*

Yep. Happy with Haddin still at the top.
At least the batting looks better on paper, and more structed too. We know Punter will come back at 3, and Hussey possibly at 6. Hopefully Symonds can prove himself again and be #5 again and suddenly the side will look ordered again.
Watson at 7 or 8 with Johnson following him - the side begins to look quite decent again.
But anyway, let's see how we do NOW first of all!!!

The lineup currently is Clarke, Symonds, Ferguson. I would swap Ferguson and Symonds around at the very least since that is their natural positions.

Good on ya Shaun, fighting for his career here. Although he's tearing hammies at a Watson rate.

Beware the walking wounded.
What a shame. Hopefully not too bad. Let's get him a hundred.

Marsh might have cost himself an opening spot at the WC if his hammy is gone. Watson and Haddin could make the opening combo their own.

Victorians are more "burnt" than "bronzed"
And despite your "heatwave", Perth still had a hotter mean maximum in february.
When was your last day over 30?
Dean Jones was spot on in his assessment.

Can hardly call Afridi a spinner, you should be playing him like a medium pacer.
Spinners on slow wickets in ODI's are hard to get away, as such they can often grab wickets.
Need to get to 220, this wicket is quite slow.
220 on this wicket would be quite a good score.

Just because Australia are struggling doesn't mean the bowlers must be throwing/cheating.
Give some credit to the opposition.

Mentioned a few days ago that it would be interesting to see how we would perform going from 1 and 1/2 months playing on bouncey seaming wickets to having to play without any warm up matchs on low, slow turners.
It is hardly earth shattering that we are struggling.
I call it the Dubai debacle. Named after the test match against Bangladesh in 2006, when we went from bouncey SA wickets to low, slow subcontinent wickets.
