Agreed, the play very clever cricket, and may make the semi-finals, but probably just short of a bit of talent to win.
It's hard to see anyone topping Aus at the moment, although S. Af with homeground addy will be one to watch.

Ever heard of Shane Warne.
He should be fit and firing by the time the World Cup comes around.

Yes that's true, but I think Sri Lanka's batting is a bit too up and down to allow Murali to have full effect. However, if they get it on song, they'll be a danger

I think New Zealand are the dangermen and my tip. They have a good all round side and well led.
South Africa will be hard as always and the home advantage could prove decisive.
I think the Aussies might do it tough. there are fitness queries on Warne, McGrath and Gillespie which is our front line attack. Brett Lee is too expensive.
Our batting isn't in scintillating form either. Hayden seems to have gone off the boil a bit, Martyn looking a bit shaky. Middle order not making many.
Still there is time to find form and hopefully the boys will discover that form and fitness so that they peak at the right time

My Tip: Australia

It's tough to seperate South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka. I'd have to agree with those who choose New Zealand as a smokey, nothing would surprise me with that team.
I think I'll go with S. Africa because of their home advantage, experienced players and overall just a great team.
But go Australia, you good things.

South Africa.
The Aussie team does not have the steely resolve that Steve Waugh gave it. I think the Aussies will be lucky to make the finals....
New Zealand will be thereabouts, but they won't win. The cream always rises to the top at World Cups, and they just aren't as classy as other teams.
South Africa is in the best form at the moment, a definite chance.
We are tired, if Warnie comes back strong we are a great chance.
Sri Lanka are erratic, but are capable of anything on their day. Looks as though they are tryig to peak at the right time, and they are my pick.

The difference there is batsmen are learning how to read and play Warne, whereas Muralphabet still bamboozles most batsmen.
Australia's attempt at playing spin makes me pick Sth Africa to win, especially when some of the SA pitches are hand sawn and generally favour spinners.

Would you call De Silva and Jayasaria world class spinners? I wouldn't. Australia cant play spin, full stop.

no i class them as useful "one day"slow bowlers.i wouldnt say australia are not hopless against these types or even your above average spinner however when they come up against someone like muri or errrrrrrrrr whats the indian spinner? then i agree we bat like a cat on a hot tin roof.
cheers!

Australia is in a class of its own.
Everyone else is rat ****. Including South Africa and New Zealand. None of these so-called challengers have been to the dance like Australia has.

I would probably agree with your classing. But the issue still remains. Jayasaria collected 4 wickets (I think) against Australia two games ago, and De Silva has got a few here and there.
Should the statement be- Australia can't play the ball when the pace is taken off it?

That explains why South Africa and New Zealand played in the VB Finals twelve months ago and Australia didn't...

I think it will depend on who plays who in the semi-finals. If Australia run into New Zealand, who have the wood on them, I reckon South Africa will beat NZ in the final. If Australia avoid NZ, then the Aussies will beat South Africa in the final. I expect Sri Lanka or England to be the 4th semi-finalist. India don't play well away from the sub-continent & Pakistan are rabble at the moment (bring back Imran). The rest haven't got the required talent.

depends on what type of bowler your talking about.EG:damien martyn or ponting type.slow to medium bowlers will always touble batsman no matter for what country as the batsman has to do all the work and cant use the pace of the ball generated by a lee, mcgrath or any other fast bowler.hence the chance of getting caught in the deep.
jayasaria and de silva while they dont spin the ball sharply they have that bowling style that id say other countries would have taken note of when coming up against australia.
cheers!

Huh??? Sth Africa is quite the opposite, there pitches are hard and fast and aren't spinner friendly.
To give you more idea there pitches are identical to the WACA Pitch, the Paki and Sri-Lankan spinners had a hell of a time trying to get wickets over there and I don't think the pitches will be changing much in the next month.

I could be completly wrong (jeez thats never happened before! ) but I thought that the hand sawn pitches cut up more easily, giving spinners in the second innings a better shot at it?

England of course.
After the last World Cup, I'd love to see another classic Australia v South Africa shoot out. However, I feel South Africa is due for a win this time, but I still hope the Aussies win.
