View Full Version : A bit of trivia...
An attempt in the vein of ABC Radio's superb daily trivia...
What's unusual about the 3rd Test match between England and Australia, at Edgbaston (Birmingham), in the 1989 Ashes series?

I'll take a guess and say the unusual thing was that Australia batted into the 4th day of the test match. This was due to the fact that rain had interupted much of the first 3 days.
I suppose that IS unusual but I was thinking more along the lines of players involved...

The only game ever where Merv Hughes bowled to Chris Tavare?
Not quite that abstract, infact it involves all the members of one of the teams.
Was it when all the Aussie fielders line up in slips ?

Was it Dean Jones batting every day for the first four days?
Was Angus the first Scot to play Test cricket?
Was it the only match where Beefy didn't get P***ed after the days play?
Okay, if the original question was a bit too vague... there is something unusual about the entire English line-up.

Looking at the team list, is it the last time the English team was made up entirely of Englishmen? Or at least English-born players?

I've cheated a bit and had a look at the team:
GA Gooch, TS Curtis, DI Gower, CJ Tavare, KJ Barnett, IT Botham, RC Russell, JE Emburey, ARC Fraser, GR Dilley, PW Jarvis.
What unusual do they have in common?
Could this be the last England team where all the players were born in the UK; as The Hippie suggested?
I wouldn't have suggested that until I'd seen the team. For some reason I seemed to remember Robin Smith playing - shows how the memory can play tricks as time passes.

Correct, all were born in England, and it was the last time a fully English-born XI represented England in a Test Match.
