Surely there's nothing in it, but unfortunately nothing surprises me any more.

The Shaw incident and the Slattery incident are poles apart IMO. Shaw came storming up to the ump and spun him around to plead his case where in Slatts' case, the ump moved into Henry's space where he lightly brushed past him. ABSOLUTELY nothing in it.

If Slattery goes for that then the umpires need to have a protective force field around them or something because its a joke. Slattery only put his hand up because when he turned around he almost got clotheslined by the umps arm.

Common sense should prevail....but common sense aint all that common these days.

The Slattery/Shaw incidents seem like they're on opposite side of the line that should be drawn for future umpire contact. Setting whatsitcalled -- precedent. I really doubt that he'll get into trouble -- play was stopped (i.e. the duty of care on Slatts' part doesn't apply) and the umpire was moving toward him.

On another note I noticed Stanton accidently bump into the officiating umpire during a run through the middle, quite a way from the ball. Hopefully just a fine if anything.

Cleared:
"Contact between Essendon’s Henry Slattery and umpire Matt Stevic from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Slattery’s contact was so slight the umpire stated he was not aware any contact had been made to him. No further action was taken."

From the AFL website.

Thats good news.
And finally, there is some knowledge on how softly you can touch an umpire.
