Apparantly John McEnroe was at training today. Maybe he was trying to teach the boys how to crack the *****s. They had a little preview during the tennis, so if you read this in time watch channel 7 news after the tennis to see it.

The Tigers received a surprise visitor to training on Monday, with tennis legend John McEnroe making an appearance at Punt Road Oval.

Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison orchestrated the meeting and worded up coach Danny Frawley about McEnroe’s pre-planned entrance. So when a van carrying a table tennis table arrived on the field during a training run, the coach’s rage was convincing and the squad was suitable bemused.

The team gathered around the vehicle before the four-time US Open and three-time Wimbledon champion revealed himself.

“The players were clearly pretty excited and totally surprised,” Richmond communications manager Paul Maley told afl.com.au.

Joel Bowden played a short match of table tennis with the notoriously fiery star. But the smaller playing surface did little to help the talented Tiger.

McEnroe signed a bat for his awestruck challenger before addressing the players and answering a few questions from Frawley.

The occasion was made complete after McEnroe donned the black and yellow jumper and had a kick of the footy.

“It was a bit wobbly,” Maley said, “but it travelled a reasonable distance.”

Good work by Hutchie & the crew to get Mc Enroe to come down to see the lads & to get him to put on the famous Yellow & Black.

?? Do you think the Marketing & Promotion department should get more of the big name stars down to the tigers when they are in town...

What do you think??????????:D :)

Well, with the Rolling Stones due to hit town soon they out to entice Keith Richards down to speak about his life as a tea-totaler and how clean living without alcohol has enhanced his performing and creativity.

Celebrity visits create a few seconds of interest. Perhaps Richmond could get into this after they win a flag. In the meantime, skills, fitness and tactics might be better things to work on.

As far as marketing and positioning is concerned it's very good, i think this kind of practice should be encouraged. Macca was a champion and winner irrespective of the way he went about it, one of the real greats of the game of tennis.

hmmm...yes and no. pre-season can be long and I'm sure the fitness and skills are being improved. it wouldn't have done the players any harm at all to see mcenroe ...suprise and all. Breaks things up...for morale : sure beats another 3 times around the tan.
