Hats off to the channel 9 marketing thinktank that now forces cricket commentators to provide reviews on non-cricket related programs in the channel 9 schedule.

I for one am deeply interested in Mark Taylor's take on the new US drama series "The Dead Zone" and find his remarks heavily infuence my viewing habits. The ch9 com team consists of many outstanding ex-sportsmen each of whom excelled in the sport of cricket. I can only assume their ability to provide unbiased, informative critiques of contemporary tv shows is of a similarly high standard.

The sooner Ritchie joins Maragret on the movie show the better. David can then slip across and co-anchor the cricket with SOD.

They are just promoting the TV show, nothing wrong with that. they work for channel 9. thats wha they have to do under their contract. Just like a salesman who has to sell somthing regardless of whether they like it or not.

Yes I heard Tubby shilling for The Dead Zone and chuckled to myself.

But then it hit me - of course it is obvious that Simon O'Donnell is being groomed to replace Richie when he retires.

Now it appears that Mark Taylor will be taking over from Pete Smith. A career of Copperart ads awaits.

Personally I don't particularly like having cricket commentated by salesmen.

I'm not blaming the commenatators - I'm quite sure it's not a spontaneous expression of their interest in the shows mentioned.

That's what the ads between overs are for. In fact, the structure of cricket is perfectly suited to advertising as there's a guaranteed commercial every 3 minutes or so. Compare this with soccer (no commericals for 45 minutes)

It's laughable to hear Mark Taylor say that 'The Dead Zone' is a quality show, what else was he expected to say? It's laughable as most ads are, especially when delivered by someone who isn't a slick professional like Taylor.

poor Tubby stuffed up his first 'Dead Zone' ad.He was flogging it last week & said something about he'll be watching it on monday night, then turns around and says he can't because the crickets on in Melbourne.30 seconds later he reliased [or was told] that the cricket is actually on Tuesday.

Sounds like a bit of a hark back to TV of the 50's and 60's when the stars of TV shows would openly endorse commercial products as part of the show.

Now, where can I buy those Laramies?

During an 'Allan Border Medal' telecast, they actually showed footage of Richie Benaud advertising Milo from the early 1960s, so I guess he's not totally alien to it.

Is anyone suggesting the ABC doesn't give itself a little plug occasionally?

Perhaps not as blatant but its definitely there. Can't say it really worries me, though I agree that it would be fantastic for Richie to plug (he would say 'promote') Sex and the City or better still 'The Bachelor'.

Yes, Simon has opened the cricket every day with Richie this summer and its very sad to see him slowly take over the reins. The good news is that Richie is contracted at Nine for another 2 summers, so hopefully he'll still be at his best for the next 24 months.

Yes with Tony.

Tony went on to say that "thieves out there watching don't rob the griegs because we will be home watching CSI"

Which is especially irritating when you consider they often play so many commericals that they miss the first point of a game.

Channel 7 started it in their last couple of years of football coverage, and continue to do it during the tennis. It is nothing new. It is just plain annoying.

The executives at ch 7 really have no brains do they? Your Life On The Lawn follows such quality shows as Auction Squad, BYO Kitchen and Whose House is it anyway?. Shows which have had absolutely no thought put into them. They should be shot, along with Johanna Griggs and that fat bastard Aristos. Pascal Fox should be put on Death Row as well. Have TV execs forgotten about comedy? Kath & Kim rated its arse off and Bad Cop Bad Cop was great. Take a hint you mindless idiots!

Anyway, after he finished, Mac commented "that was good, you sounded almost interested in it". :D

Don't you understand???

Shows like Kath&kim only bring in half the revenue. programmes like BYO kitchen allow room for product endorsments, product placement etc. The executives need to pay of their mansions somehow..hence crap reality lifestyle infomercials passed off as entertainment.

Now if the stupid public of Australia turned their tvs off and went for a walk maybe the execs might take the hint.

does it also have something to do with the laws that stipulate a certain percentage of shows must have australian content?? and of course its much cheaper to produce shows like this. you dont have to employ actors, write scripts etc, not to mention as you say the reems of advertising revenue.

i think the quality of programming during the non ratings period encourages a lot more walking, less tv watching.

Ladies & gentlemen ... we have a winner. Spot on FF - TV execs don't care if it's good, they care if it rates. If people stop watching sh*te, they'll stop airing sh*te. Simple process.

Today Richie was promoting Survivor 6 - Amazon! He was trying to persuade Tubby Taylor to audition for the next series (oh please oh please dont make another! )

Richie: I think you would be a strong competitor and could out wit others
Taylor: "My answer will be and won't change, NO"

Does anyone else cringe while they listen to the Ch. 9 commentators crap on about a show they clearly don't watch and you would think, would not be their cup of tea?

Richie Benaud plugging The Dead Zone, just doesn't seem right, now if he was plugging something like Judging Amy you could say "well, I guess he would watch a show like that", but not The Dead Zone.

agree with you fully catman. seems like they are taking us for damn fools when they expect us to believe richie watches the dead zone.

at least they could taylor their ads to when an appropriate commentator is on. perhaps tony would be the most plausible for that one?

Did I hear correctly that Richie said Mark Taylor would be fit enough to go on that show ?

His nickname is Tubby, for obvious reasons.

Yes, Richie was making out to the audience that Taylor was a buff, fit, ironman. Instead we see a chubby cheeks Taylor sitting on the couch with his Fujitsu air conditioner.

Why 'Judging Amy?' Because that's considered a show for older viewers? I think the point is that Richie doing this sort of advertising for any Ch. 9 show seems absurd.

Of course, as he pointed out in the post above, he isn't here to watch any of the shows!

Richie plugging CSI last week was a great moment in televisionHe said something along the lines of: "CSI Miami, channel 9s new drama for 2003 and I've been reliably informed that it's a sexy new drama series".
Woo hoo sexy!!!!

BTW: Richie would be good at advertorialising Murder She Wrote wouldn't he?

I didn't know that but I'm not surprised.

I think phrases like "channel 9 marketing thinktank" and "copycat plagiarism" are pretty much interchangeable.

my point all along. why would you buy one 3 months before the tournament, where there is every chance that the names on there will be sitting at home watching it??

espect one to be flogged after the WC, they'll sell twice as many, esp if we win.

Because Judging Amy, IMO, is aimed at the older demographic.

But I think any of the commentators plugging shows is absurd. They are there to call the game, not plug up coming shows, isn't that what ad breaks are for?
