Looks like it will happen........... At some point, most likely late 09 or early 2010.
It might be a long build up but what a fight this would be.
so along with discussion I thought a poll might see what we think as the fight approaches.
I think if it goes the distance Mayweather will win but if it is a stopage I think Pacman will be the only one looking to stop the fight.
So I'm guessing this will happen if Mayweather beats Marquez? Or do you think it'll happen anyway?

Mayweather would be finished if he lost to Marquez.
Marquez is a fine technician, one of the best - but doesn't have a great deal in the power stakes.
I just can't seriously entertain the thought of Marquez out boxing Mayweather - hence a Mayweather win.

No room for TKO in the poll?
I voted pacman by decision, but if tko was there would've voted pacman by tko.
Floyd isn't to be underestimated obviously.

I was going to put in TKO but the poll was getting a bit long winded so I thought KO was a good enough option.
As I understand it, if you stop someone it counts towards your KO record so you should have gone for KO.
So for others who feel the same for poll purposes: KO = Stoppage whether by knock out or the ref.

I'd like to think Manny would win by KO , but Mayweather is a great boxer and probably won't commit to trading blows at any stage . He will know that if he trades with Manny he will be KO'd .
This fight ( if it happens ) will be one of the biggest fights of all time !

Mayweather would never step in the ring with Pacquiao. The guy is a ****ing destroyer. But if it were to happen, I think the key to the fight would be Mayweather. He has the defense to keep Pacquiao off him, but he would have to sustain a high workrate in order to a) maintain some distance, and b) score enough points to win on the cards!
Pacquiao's workrate is incredible given the power he puts behind his shots. You see guys like Sam Soliman who punch like a whirlwind non-stop, but their shots have nothing behind them. Pacquiao is literally like a miniture southpaw Mike Tyson circa 1986, except he's far more versatile. That lateral movement coming in and the killer power in both hands is what reminds me of him. But Pacquiao is very effective on the back foot, moving in and out between combinations. Tyson couldn't fight going backwards.
The size difference in this fight would obviously favour Mayweather, and as a result, Pacquiao would have to be the aggressor. This doesn't mean he'd have to charge in like Ricky Hatton did, nor fight at his chest like Castillo did. He would just have to force the action, but make sure that he's constantly moving in and out of range, and ducking under and out after throwing leather. Floyd's best punch is his right hand, Pacquiao is most vulnerable to the right hand. Pacquiao's best punch is the left hand, Floyd is most vulnerable to the jab. But obviously Pacquiao is a southpaw, which means his cross is the jab that Floyd is vulnerable to, but the massive factor here is with that extra distance the left hand needs to travel, Floyd has more time to react (and we all know his reflexes are superb).
So I would not be at all surprised if Freddie Roach trained Pacquiao for this fight to fight a little more square on in order to reduce the distance the left hand has to travel. Even though the right hook has become extremely effective in recent fights (more so than the left against Hatton), Floyd's shoulder roll defense is very effective at negating the right hook (because it obviously loops and rolls off the shoulder). This was decieving against De La Hoya because his most successful punch after the jab was the straight right hand, but that's mainly because he was far taller than Floyd, and it meant he had leverage over the left shoulder of Floyd.
So basically to sum up: Pacquiao would need to fight coming forward (for the first time in a while - since Marquez?), but still maintaining that elusive lateral movement, because Mayweather is a deadly counter-puncher with underrated power. Marquez busted Pacquiao up in two fights with his counter-punching, but a large ingredient for his success was his willingness to engage Pacquiao and force him onto the back foot. Would Floyd have the balls to open himself up by moving onto the front foot against a guy as devastating as Pacquiao? Who knows. But one this is for sure... Mayweather would need to be fighting hard from the opening bell. Because unlike DLH, Pacquiao isn't going to run out of gas at the business end. He's going to get stronger and stronger. Just ask Erik Morales.

Mayweather is fighting Juan Manual Marquez on July 18th. He should win as Marquez is coming up 2 weight divisions to fight him. Marquez is a great fighter though so you never know what could happen? Marquez should have got the decision over Pacquiao the 2nd time they fought.
In reguards to Pacquiao vs Mayweather i wouldn't expect this fight to occur in the near future as Mayweather is very hard to deal with at the negotiating table. Both men will feel they deserve the bigger pay cheque so it will come down to who is willing to take less than what they feel they deserve. Freddie Roach has already said that Pacquaio's next fight would be one of Mayweather, Mosley or Cotto and it could come down to who is easiest to deal with.

Personally i'd love to see Mosley vs Pacquiao just as much as i'd like to see Mayweather vs Pacquiao. Mosley is often forgot when people talk big fights but he offers an exciting fight and rarely takes a back step.

I thought he did. Should be a ripper.....god they make a killing out of it. I wanna know where all this money comes from. UFC will one day hopefully step up to this level but I still prefer a 1 on 1 boxing fight only. The technical stuff is much more interesting rather than a brawl.

Bump
Might be worth talking about this again after Pacmans latest win.
Edit: Just saw we have another thread dealing with the subject.
