View Full Version : UFC to Sydney is 2010
http://www.fightersonlymagazine.co.uk/news/viewarticle.php?id=2285&offset=0
The UFC may stage its first Australian show in February 2010 with Sydney being the likely host venue, Fighters Only has been told.
UFC president Dana White recently spoke of the company's intention to head down under, and an Australian source tells us that the Acer Arena in Sydney has been contacted about a February booking.
The Arena - formerly known as the Sydney SuperDome - has a maximum capacity of 21,000 and is one of Australia's leading venues.
Among the high-profile events in regularly plays host to are the MTV Australia music awards and concerts by some of the biggest names in showbusiness.
A number of Australian fighters have appeared in the UFC over the years, including Elvis Sinosic, George Sotiropoulos and Brad Morris.

Although MMA has not taken off here yet, I still think it would be a great show. You see the crowds at the Australian Cage Fighting Championships get quite into it, so you'd think a big UFC show would have a decent atmosphere.
Damn, I hope this eventuates. Planning for (and paying) a wedding next year so this will fit the budget much better.

I'd go
No decent AU fighters to make the bill, but that's not going to stop UFC 99 in Germany. One thing you got to love about Dana and the Silvas' is they do more than anyone else to promote MMA to the world. I'd go for sure.

george sotiropoulos has been waiting for a ppv debut... he'd get on the undercard. other than that... what's mark hunt doing nowadays? (yeah, we'd have to do that thing where we claim anyone from the oceania region as australian)
i'd love to see it happen - but i doubt it... these rumours have been around for years.

Unfortunately "Cage" fighting is illegal in Victoria. But MMA in a ring is all good

Did he say where?
Hey man. Dana would not say in which state it was going to be in. I quickly advised him that Melbourne was the sporting capitol, however he responded with "but is'nt MMA in cages banned in that state?", which leads me to beleive it will be in Sydney.
Regardless, i dont care which state, i will be there for the whole event.
UFC100 was seriously something amazing to experience.

1. Put your video up onto youtube and link it here i want to see a) how ugly you are and b) dana fuggin white telling us himself that ufc will be here in 2010.
2. Did you meet him at the expo? Who else did you meet? Did you bang holly madison or either of the other ring girls at the after party? :) (joke)

Ok mate... I will get onto that for you.
I met endless amounts of fighters. Fair few big names. Randy, Chuck, Royce Gracie, Wandy being the high lights, however like i mentioned in the other thread, people, like Shane Carwin, Forrest, Machida, Guida were absolutely exception.
Shane Carwin seriously chatted to me for 15-20 mins and in the end i left so i could track down some of the other fighters.
P.S. Sadly, behind Randy and Wandy, Kimbo "I've proven nothing yet" Slice was one of the biggest attactions.
Ok this looks like it's on the 'five ounces of pain' website is saying UFC 110 or 111 will be held at ACER Arena in sydney in feb 2010 that is only 4 months away. This is bloody awesome I am there I thought if they were coming it would be a UFN but it seems it'll be a big show with all the good stuff.

Looking forward to this.
It's a shame VIC don't have MMA in a cage, the 'No Holds Barred fighting' in a ring sucks, & causes more problems than anything.
But hey, thank Justin Merlino (Minister for Sport) for thinking of the safety of fighters....the knob.
I don't mind MMA in a ring. It has its benefits, watching it as a spectator is much better from a ring as it is compared to a cage.
Both cage and ring have their pros and cons IMO.
Bon Angry
15 Oct 2009, 11:48
True, watching a ring combat is better for the spectator, but I reckon there is more interference in a ring vs cage.
But like you said there's pro's & con's for both. :)

i've been a massive fan of mma since i first saw pride 8 years ago. i've dreamed of a major event in australia - but i won't be going just because ufc brings an event down here.
i fell out of wrestling because wwe kept taking advantage of the lack of wrestling in australia and delivering substandard crap that they charged top dollar for.
i won't be a part of ufc doing the same thing.
if we get a good card and good main event, i'd spend the $500+ that i see it costing for ringside - but if its a garbage card, i'm not going.
i'm a massive fan of wand since his pride days, but him vs sexyama, whilst a good co-main, is not enough to get me to go. it is not a pay per view quality main event.
coleman should no longer be in ring, and in recent years sinosic has been little more than a can... so i'd be horrified if that gets advertised as a main card match.
if sotiropoulos wins his fight in the 106 prelims, i'd expect him to make his main card debut - hopefully against one of the middle-upper guys. if clay guida loses to florian at 107, george vs clay would be a great fight for george to step up in - although i recognise it's unrealistic.
i dunno - i really, really want to support it. but i'm not forking out for the trip, accommodation and tickets to support a substandard card like they've started putting on in england... and nor should ufc want to! part of the reason for liking the australian market is because they can do a lunch time show here and show it live on ppv in america (unlike english events where they're shown for free on spike due to the time delay). surely its in their interests to put on a good card!

Saw they signed Te Huna last week.
Elvis vs Coleman LOL.
Sotiropoulos should run through Jason Dent next month so you'd reckon he'd be on the card too provided he doesn't get injured.
Cro Cop vs Rothwell is being rumoured now. The event is starting Sunday afternoon here so they can show it live on PPV Saturday night in the US, which is a bit of a kick in the balls but the positive means they have to provide a PPV quality card and Wand-Akiyama is apparently not going to be the main event.
I still think Mirko should probably retire but I'm sold at the chance of watching him fight live. Fairly worried though that Rothwell (who has to cut to make weight) will just bully him around for three rounds though.

Would not be suprised if it was, similar to the Franklin fight I guess.
Well I'm going, any idea when and where you can get tickets?
I kinda also want to see Mirko retire, but I do think Cro Cop has a decent chance against Rothwell, assuming he actually comes to fight. It's amazing how mental a fighter he is, depending on confidence he can be a lion or a kitten.
Be awesome to see Cro Cop and Wand in the flesh though...
Any idea when tickets come out or how much they are likely to be?

Agreed, it will be awesome to see Crocop in the flesh but I have a sick feeling this is going to just be more of a holiday for him.
Tickets will range from $100 up to about $1400 I reckon. From experience the best seats are the ones level height with the cage (remember its fukn huge and at floor level its hard to see whats going on through the fence on the other side) or just above level height. These will go for about 250-400ish I am guessing.
My guess is tickets will go on sale around the weekend of UFC 107. Prices for 105 in the UK next week varied between 40 and 250 pounds so perhaps we're looking at $75-100 for the cheapest seats up to $500-750 for cageside.
$150 will probably be my limit I reckon
Add Marquardt vs Sonnen and Soszynski vs Bonnar to the card.

Card so far is (a lot of rumour though):

Wand vs Sexyama
Rich Franklin vs Keith Jardine (rumoured)
Cro Cop vs Rothwell
Nate Marquardt vs Chael Sonnen (rumoured)
Bonnar vs Soszynski
Undercard
James Te-Huna vs. Igor Pokrajac

For those asking about tix and pricing:
I registered for a ticketek update on the status of the tickets. Usually means a pre-sale chance to buy the tickets. Follow the link from the ufc.com.
In the U.S the tickets range from $50 for shat tickets up to about $2500 for cageside, considering the value of the AUD at the moment, id expect somewhere near the same.

US time mate. We're a day in front.
Bader vs Jardine has been added to the card.
A main card of Nog/Cain, Wand/Bisping, Cro Cop/Rothwell, Bader/Jardine and Sots/Stevenson looks really solid. On top of that there's Bonnar/Soszynski, Stun Gun/Lytle and the return of Elvis on the prelims.
MMAJunkie said tickets are going on sale to Fight Club members next Monday, although that's a $75-per-year membership so unless you're incredibly desperate to get particular seats or plan on going to another UFC card in the US or Europe next year it's not really worth it. If you subscribe to their newsletter (free) tickets are on sale on Wednesday and then tickets for the general public are out on Friday.
http://au.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=news.detail&gid=29585
Tickets – priced $50, $75, $150, $250, $350 and $450 – go on sale via www.ticketek.com.au to UFC Fight Club members at 9:00 AEDST, on Monday, 7th December. Tickets will then be available to Ticketek and UFC Newsletter subscribers from 13:00 AEDST on Wednesday, 9th December.
Tickets will go on general release at 9:00 AEDST, Friday, 11th December.
How fast do you guys think it will sell out?
Will it get to general public?
Pretty close to sold out by Friday afternoon I reckon.

Just thought I'd add:
Each presale has only a certain amount of tickets in each price range allocated to it, so it won't be open slather until Friday morning.
I would think that for UFC FC, the allocation would be very very small, and it would increase once My Ticketek's presale starts on Wednesday.
Moral of the story is: If you're forced to wait until general sale on Friday, don't panic, there'll be plenty of seats available.
But not for long :D
I bit the bullet and bought a fight club membership, and just bought 3 tickets in platinum section for me and the boys! Pretty excited just knowing that I'll be going to a UFC next year. :)
Wish we could've got front row on the first incline but I'm sure ours will be great seats too.

For those who've been to a UFC event before how is it as a spectator sport? Looking at the action through a wire cage couldn't be that great surely?
Also, to those who've been to events at Acer Arena what's the setup like? How many people does it seat and what is the view likely to be like with a big cage in the middle.
I'm waiting until Wednesday before i get my tickets, just seeing what price i'm going to have to pay to get a decent view. Can't wait to see Wand and Cro Cop!!

I'm guessing the event will start around 10:30am with the Prelims and the Main Event will start around 1:00pm finishing around 4pm. This lines up with the usual time the PPV's are shown in the US.
I'll be flying up and down the same day so I'm hoping to confirm the start/finish times ASAP so we can lock in flight tix....
Prelims will start by 11:30am at the very earliest and the card will finish by 5pm at the latest. Not sure what the configuration for Acer Arena is but when I was leaving UFC 92 it took at least 15 minutes to get out so it's worth accountiing for that in planning flight times.
