Gold Coast want derby clash with Brisbane Lions as AFL opener
Andrew Hamilton | May 08, 2009 12:00am

GOLD Coast officials will lobby hard to open the $126 million Gold Coast Stadium with a derby against the Brisbane Lions. The blockbuster, which would certainly attract a sell-out crowd of 25,000, could kick off a bi-annual event between the two clubs with a "Kokoda" theme.

AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou gave only cautious support for the proposal, raising fears the construction of the facility might eat into the opening weeks of the 2011 season and would not be available for the NAB Cup and possibly the early premiership rounds.

A derby to kickstart the club's inaugural season would propel membership sales through the roof, given it could be the only way for fans to guarantee a seat at the historic first home game.

Gold Coast chairman John Witheriff confirmed the club would push the derby angle strongly at league headquarters.

"Game one 2011 will be an incredibly important game," he said.

"But game one at Gold Coast Stadium in front of our own supporters will be an equally important game.

"Wouldn't it be a fantastic dream for game one at the new Gold Coast Stadium to be a Gold Coast verses Brisbane Lions derby. I think that is worth campaigning for."

Lions chairman Tony Kelly said Brisbane would have no objection to being part of the Coast's big celebrations - but said it was too early to talk about themes.

"We'd like to have a chat to them about the derbys, we're going to play two and the start of the season might be good," he said.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese yesterday delivered the final piece of the funding package with a $36 million development grant to the Gold Coast City Council.

The 25,000 capacity stadium, which has been designed by Brisbane-based Populous (formerly HOK), will include 23,000 seats and standing area for a further 2000. The interior design work has not been completed, but the ground will cater for 2000 corporate guests - most probably including about 100 private boxes and two large dinning rooms.

Demetriou said work would start in the second half of this season after the round 14 premiership match between Richmond and Adelaide on July 4, but he cold not guarantee the stadium would be ready for round 1, 2011.

"That is in the hands of the builders, but even if it is not we can always stage it so it is round 2 or 3, we intend playing football here in 2011," he said.

The race for the new CEO position has narrowed to three with Gold Coast Council CEO and GCFC board member Dale Dickson accepting a new four-year deal from the council.

GCFC chief operating officer Scott Munn appears to have received Demetriou's blessing, although it is understood Geelong's COE Stuart Fox is also highly regarded

I would think a GC v Brisbane game would be the best way to start off the Gold Coast club. However a "Kokoda" theme would be cringeworthy....

I wonder if the AFL will give it to them.

Thoughts?

I would have thought it would be better to have that game later.
You should get a full house for your first home game, why use up a derby to a game that should sell out anyway? Save the derby for when it might be needed. Round five would be good, imo.
First game vs a low drawing side (get a full house against a side you might not sell out against otherwise); away in round two; a decent drawing team (Adelaide, Carlton, Richmond for example) in round three; away in round four; Brisbane in round five - three big home crowds to start the club, and a good way to sell the club to the community before the hard work starts and gthe regular crowd numbers start rolling up.

Hmmm, that's a good point, one that in my view makes it less attractive to have the first game v Brisbane. The first game has to be on the Gold Coast.

Surely the first game has to be against Collignwood or Geelong or someone like htat

Yeah no point wastin a derby at the start.

Derby should be around Round 4 or something

The AFL should introduce Derby Week, where all the crosstown rivals face off. Stick the Showdown & Western Derby matches on Friday & Saturday night, with the Lions Vs. GCFC match on the Saturday arvo. And if West Sydney comes to be in the future, then we've got a Sunday arvo match. Do I know how to fixture a season or what?!

Speaking of which, what will the Lions/GCFC match be called? The others have names, so this one should get an official title. Something like the Playoff, or the Blockbuster, but not just Lions Vs. GCFC.

Once there are 18 teams, round 22 (or whatever the last round is if the season is extended) should have no interstate travel.
Adel v Port, Bris v GC, Syd v WSyd, WC v Freo. No starting finals with back to back travel.

they tried having the derby and showdown in round 22 before but it didnt work because they are like finals anyway and the teams didnt want a game like that the week before finals

CoastBhoy, CoastBhoy, CoastBhoy... it won't be the 'stoush' because it sounds like German sausage. :(

'The Burnout' is the only logical option. :thumbsu: Hold on while I put my sunglasses on.

Why?!? Having you're own ground plays a huge part in you're clubs identity, and Having a rabid fanbase in you're own cauldron of fear surely has to be worth more than 10000 extra patrons for a single game. To carve out you're own niche as a club you need to keep the dividing line between Brisbane and the Gold Coast as strong as possible, and playing home games at the Gabba for a few more dollars is doing the exact opposite. Sorry if I don't make sense, i've just come back from the pub and I;m a little hazy in my thoughts...

I think they should play Collingwood or Essendon. Get the big guns in town for the 1st round.

I figure they should do well crowd-wise first up regardless. Why use up a big drawing team when there will be close to a full house no matter who they play?
Make it an average drawing side first up, then one of Collingwood/Essendon/Adelaide who are likely to have the biggest ex-pat communities and the Brisbane. Start with a hattrick of full houses, so it can't be witten off as a "one game" thing like it could be if they got Brisbane first.

But the GC people should know the situation better than this mug, so whatever they feel is best should be looked at seriously to give them a good start.

my vote goes for a gold coast v north melbourne round 1 clash

early on i reakon these two clubs would have quite a rivalry, and it needs to be on the gold coast.

It was part of the deal to end the contract to play a majority of home games @ Gabba.
