Victorian keeper Darren Berry has been dropped from Victoria's next one-day and first-class match after being late for a 6:30am training session this morning.
As to why it happened, Berry saidThe alarm clock was set but I failed to check the am/pm setting. Consequently I missed training.
Oh well.

I've actually done that before and been over 2 hours late to work so I can understand just how easy it can be done.... not to mention embarassing trying to explain it. :D
David Hookes seems too have double standards. He expects everyone to be at training at a certain time, but its okay for him to leave early to do his radio show or fly to Sydney to host his TV show.
He oversleeps and as a consequence is suspended from five days of cricket? Why do I get the feeling there's more to this than that?
and Brad Hodge is filling in as captain. Is this the same Brad Hodge that was most likely going to be dropped this week ?

Speaking of missing training sessions, anyone read the article in the Hun today about Arneberger? After a game in Sydney, he had to stay back to give a urine sample for a drug test and because he was dehydrated it took awhile. Meanwhile, back at the team hotel, there was a 6am swim session called for the next morning. Arneberger didn't know about it, of course, but still got an almighty rocket from Hookes .

Whatever David Hookes is doing, he is doing a good job as Victoria's performances are much better this season with the exception of the last Pura Cup game and last 3 ING Cup games.

I don't think there is anything more to it, as Hookes had said publicly beforehand that anyone who wasn't on time for these training sessions, no matter what, would be dropped.
It reminds me of Richmond's strict policy on players caught drinking under certain circumstances that saw players dropped a few years ago. The rules are so rigidly applied that they can easily lose their relevance and respect from the players and not really do much good at all.

This would also be the same Brad Hodge who has captained Victoria before, even against England.
does anyone know for certain if Arnberger and Ruymmans have been dropped as well, or just injured? arnberger is something like 3rd or 4th highest run scorer in the Pura Cup, and hes dropped for this game.

According to Hookes they were dropped from the ING game because it's a meaningless game for Victoria and he'd rather try some others and for them to concentrate on the Pura cup. He said both players were "disappointed".

Fair enough about Berry. Hookes told them all if they were not on time for training, that they would be dropped

Exactly, at least he stuck to his word.
There's a bit of media specualtion as to whether to move to make the suspension for just 2 games instead of the rest of the season, was a backflip on behalf of Hookes due to it being Berry caught out by the deal.
Had it been a Klinger or Carr, purely for example, would they have been dropped for the rest of the season?

That's immedieatly what I thought when I heard that Berry had been dropped for 2 matches...If a fringe player was the one who slept in, he probably would have been gone for the season.
But Hookes is certainly showing that he's got balls by dropping the captain...I wonder if he would have done the same if it was Shane Warne and he was available for those matches?

8:30am i believe it was. co-incidentally it was the day after the AB medal night where you would think a lot of players would 'kick on'.

A bit of discipline is alright but why drop him from the pura cup game aswell. Its a crucial game and Berry is still the best gloveman going around (anywhere) and it could well end up costing us a spot in the final.

Yeah, but that was in a tour match against England in 1998/99 when the Vics rested about 8 of their best side so if it wasn't Hodge captaining, it would've been either Brad Willams (playing his only game for Victoria that season) or a virtual first-gamer.

Hookes has said that although it was said in the media players who missed the session would be out for the whole season, when they got back into the clubrooms he told the players it would be 2 matches
Hookes has proved himself to be even more of a drop kick.Last thursday a caller rang him on air at 3AW and said Peter Roach would be a better choice as fill in wicketkeeper, instead of Croswaite [whatever his name is].Hookes gave the guy a mouthful & said why not play a young guy, instead of an older guy [Roach might be about 27].Who is wicketkeeper for tomorrows Pura Cup game ? Peter Roach.

hookesy's biggest failing is that he doesnt like being told what to do, it dents his ego and will not listen to callers if they do not mimick his idea's. he is one of those guys that might think something is a good idea, but if some caller is showing him up by suggesting it, hookesy always cuts them down.
I actually thought Essendon's Brent Hutchison had moved to 2nd in line behind Berry but it looks like Roach and Crosswaite are still ahead of him.
Hutchison played in the Vic 2nd XI game a couple for weeks back and hit 59 for the VIS a couple of days ago and is only 25-26
Watching Adam Crosthwaite in the Under-19s test on at the moment it's evident that this guy is a class act; he takes everything. (Unlike the English keeper Hodd.) I think it might be time to push Berry into retirement.
Could Darren Berry please be late for another training session before the next Pura Cup game.
;)
