VETERAN Australian actor Charles "Bud" Tingwell died this morning, aged 86.

Tingwell passed away in a Melbourne hospital at 8.30am with his son and daughter by his side, his spokesperson told news.com.au.

He died due to complications with prostate cancer, the spokesperson said.

Tingwell had been diagnosed with the disease a couple of years ago.

Best known for his roles in the film Breaker Morant, mini-series All The Rivers Run and more recently, The Castle, Tingwell was still acting in films and the stage until recent years.

He revealed how he became known as Bud on his offical website.

"It wasn't until I was 60 years old that I finally found out why my parents called me Bud, rather than my real name, Charles," he said.

"Although it had been a much-discussed topic in the Tingwell family for decades, my mother had never come clean.

"After she died, an uncle finally told me the truth. When my mother was pregnant, she had been teased by some friends at the Coogee Surf Club, asking, 'What's budding in there?' It became 'How's the bud?' and finally 'Bud'.
"I rather liked Charles. But I also love the ordinariness of Bud."

He was an absolute legend - RIP and Condolances to his family :(

absolute oz film and tv legend, ww2 hero as well.
unusual in that all of his performances contained dignity and i cant recall him in a bad role. looked like a true gentleman.
the castle is one of my favourites, i watched this when on a few weeks ago and thought that bud must be getting on a bit now and that eventually we will lose this icon of the oz screen.
r.i.p. bud.

RIP Bud...Like most here, I became a fan through his work on the Late Show. A fine actor who didn't take himself too seriously, obviously. Love his work in the Castle too.

Death is the opening of a more subtle life. In the flower, it sets free the perfume; in the chrysalis, the butterfly; in man, the soul.

Legend in all our eyes.

Requiescat in pace.

I am completely devestated by this news, he was an absolute hero of mine. If it's possible to have an "old man crush", mine was for him.

R.I.P Bud

And from the rest of the Kerrigan Family. Enjoy the serenity, you earned it.

Charlie and Bud are reunited at the 'Dead Man's Weir' in the sky.

RIP to Bud, a legendary figure in the entertainment industry in this country, but more imporantly, one of the most genuine and lovely blokes you could possibly hope to meet.

RIP Bud - so many great performances over an amazing career. I too went to YouTube to see his performance as 'Gramps' in Charlie the Wonderdog. Classic.

Bud Tingwell had a very long career starting in 1946.

Some of his finest work was in the 1970 series Catweazle where he played Mr Bennett, the father of carrot top.
